What you’ll be doing 

You will be part of a developing team and will provide a variety of support services to senior professionals within the team and the wider company, including , chapter writing, stakeholder engagement and contribution to proposals with the support of your line manager and colleagues. You will support and mentor junior colleagues to build up their skills.  

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Drafting and review of Marine Archaeology Reports (WSI, PAD, technical reports and EIA chapters); 
  • Act as technical lead on projects that have been delegated to you, managing time, resource, and finances, as applicable 
  • Prepare inputs for client proposals through, for example, information gathering, assessment of relevant data and details and providing appropriate summaries  
  • Ensure project work is completed to a high standard, using appropriate professional language, to time and on budget. Also ensure that reports, documents etc. comply with our Information Management System (IMS) requirements  
  • Able to participate in and contribute to client meetings and team meetings occasionally on your own and unsupervised

  • You will be able to project manage the technical aspects of large, complex, multi-disciplinary consent related commissions in the offshore renewables sector  
  • You will have a strong knowledge of marine archaeology including the current methods, legislation, techniques, and guidance which directs the services we provide

76th Annual Meeting & Conference of the Florida Anthropological Society, Joint Meeting with the Alabama Archaeological Society

The Center for War and Society at San Diego State University seeks a historian to serve as its postdoctoral Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Research Partner Fellow. With over 80,000 missing personnel unaccounted for from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War, the DPAA’s mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting to their families and the nation. The DPAA Research Partner Fellow will support the Agency’s mission through conducting research and analysis that may include, but is not limited to, historical research and writing, data organization and management, digital humanities projects, GIS, foreign language translation, and public history work.

Lead OR Supervisory Archaeologist

Lead OR Supervisory Archaeologist to support a contract with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) West Coast Region (WCR). These are full-time, remote positions that are anticipated to begin on July 1, 2024. Hiring for these positions will be contingent on contract award.

Cultural resources may be impacted on historic properties on federal, state, private, or tribal lands. Therefore, NMFS seeks support to serve as a professional archaeologist and lead historic preservation for NMFS grant programs within the WCR. The employee would lead NMFS implementation and compliance with federal historic preservation legislation, especially the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and the Archaeological Resource Protection Act. The employee will serve as liaison between NMFS, Tribes, and State Historic Preservation Officers to consult on cultural resource issues and prepare and conduct educational and outreach activities, presentations, and events that provide information on NMFS compliance with the NHPA when applicable. The employee will be responsible for creating procedures for historic preservation compliance that meet the requirements of law and regulation. Moreover, they will conduct research at libraries, agencies, and other institutions for archaeological, historic, and ethnographic information, and create and implement a cultural resource administrative program for NMFS, and update and maintain cultural resource hard-copy and computer records tracking project status, sites, inventories, consultations, and artifact collections.

And/or coordinate with NMFS grant program staff, grant recipients, partners, Tribes, other federal agencies, and other archaeologists to manage the Section 106 process and cultural resources that may be impacted by NMFS undertakings on historic properties on federal, state, private, or tribal lands. Consult with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs), and other interested parties concerning the effects of undertakings on historic properties. Conduct research at libraries, agencies, and other institutions for archaeological, historic, and ethnographic information. Serve as a liaison between NMFS and Tribes and NMFS and SHPO. The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis invites applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position at the intersection of Critical Ocean Studies, Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Anticolonial studies. The position is funded by a starting grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands led by Dr Mikki Stelder, of which the PhD position is a part.

The PhD fellow will be part of ASCA, one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR) and the Global Arts, Culture and Politics Department. ASCA is a research community devoted to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of culture (in all its forms and expressions) from a broad humanities perspective. ASCA is home to more than 120 scholars and 160 PhD candidates, and is a world-leading international research school in Cultural Analysis. ASCA members share a commitment to working in an interdisciplinary framework and to maintaining a close connection with contemporary cultural and political debates.

You will design your own independent research project and will be part of a dynamic research environment where you are able to attend and create research groups and participate in a lively ASCA community of interdisciplinary scholarship.

What are you going to do?

You will be working on an independent research project of your own design that examines questions around oceanic imaginaries and oceanic solidarities that foreground and augment critical and creative perspectives from the Global South (including the South within the North). You are expected to have a strong interest in critical theoretical lineages of Indigenous Studies, Black Studies, Caribbean Philosophy, Pacific Studies, Archipelagic and/or Anticolonial Studies as they intersect with thinking about the ocean. You should display an awareness around the limitations of Anthropocene and critical ocean studies discourses that fail to examine the role of imperialism and colonialism and a keen understanding of your relation to your own research.

During the PhD, you will develop your own guided independent study of the fields critical to your project. Furthermore, you are invited to show creativity in research design and methodology beyond conventional academic methods and writing. Your supervisors will guide you through the process of becoming a more independent researcher. You will also co-design a research group on Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities and have the opportunity to design a symposium.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Submission of a PhD thesis within a four-year period;
  • Shaping and participating in an Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities research group;
  • Publishing one single-authored, peer reviewed article;
  • Presenting intermediate research results at workshops and conferences, including outside of the Netherlands;
  • Organising knowledge dissemination activities: in collaboration with the Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities research group;
  • Participating in the Research Schooland Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes;

Your experience and profile

  • excellent research skills demonstrated by an outstanding Master’s thesis and a demonstrable capacity to develop a track record of publishing in high-ranking journals and/or with leading presses or professional arts venues;
  • a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research;
  • enthusiasm for communicating academic research to non-academic audiences;

What can we offer you?

We offer a temporary employment contract for the period of 48 months. The first contract will be for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months, contingent on a positive performance evaluation within the first 12 months. The employment contract is for 38 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024 or as soon thereafter.

Your salary is in the first year of the employment contract € 2,770 up and in the last year a maximum of € 3,539 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Part-Time Submerged Pre-contact Archaeologist. The Submerged Pre-contact Archaeologist will provide support to cultural resource projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the greater US, as available. The Submerged Pre-contact Project Archaeologist will have knowledge of processing and interpreting marine geophysical data (sub-bottom profiler), core processing, analyze pre-contact and historic artifacts, prepare compliance reports, tribal experience, and have a specialization in paleolandscape reconstruction for the identification of ancient submerged landforms.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the scoping of marine archaeological projects and utilize GIS, site records, and other data sources to identify locations where sites can occur.
  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) documentation pertaining to cultural resources.
  • Provides regulatory compliance support for federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients.
  • Serves as a Field Director and has extensive experience in directing field crews under the guidance of the Principal Investigator including scheduling work and making individual or team work assignments and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods. May have the ability to serve as a Principal Investigator, based on level of experience and project complexity.
  • Supports all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance.
  • Collects information and makes judgments through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.
  • Writes archaeological reports and/or prepares archaeological site forms and makes decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and effects on historic properties in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.

Research area and project description:
andidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of marine geophysical data and sediment cores. The call is for two PhD positions.

The successful candidate will be part of a newly established research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to grow our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.

The two PhD candidates will be working closely together and will be an integrated part of the research group. They will focus on establishing a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, describing the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types and linking seismic morphologies to various paleoenvironments. The project also involves possibilities of numerical modeling approaches including machine learning.

The results from the project will provide information on the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. Such information is relevant for future climate mitigation and adaptions, and for a sustainable use of the coastal zones. Additional impact may relate to offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.

The project involves close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The two PhD projects will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.

The research project and the two PhD positions are funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Senior Geoarchaeological Consultant

We are seeking to employ a Senior Geoarchaeologist to play a lead role in developing and leading our consultancy work in geoarchaeology, palaeoenvironments and deposit modelling. To meet our growing workload and specialist requirements we are looking for an experienced geoarchaeologist to develop our capabilities to undertake geoarchaeological assessment, produce geoarchaeological project designs and written schemes of investigation, manage/undertaken geoarchaeological monitoring and recording, and create deposit models. 


The role comprises, but is not limited to, developing our inhouse capabilities to undertake all elements of geoarchaeological work on infrastructure projects, from project bidding, through inception, design assessment, and fieldwork stages. Including production of reports and deposits models to support projects/planning applications, and providing specialist advise and client liaison. In addition, the successful applicant will support the Heritage Team with general archaeological consultancy work, include historic environment assessment and EIA inputs.

The role – what’s involved?

Wessex Archaeology is a key partner in the offshore renewables industry providing heritage sector support at all stages from EIA to Operations and Maintenance for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.

We are seeking to employ a talented professional to the role of Marine Geoarchaeologist with a background in geoarchaeology, geosciences and palaeolandscape research to work as part of a collaborative team in supporting offshore renewable energy projects. You will work alongside colleagues in the Geoservices directorate (including Marine Geophysics and Environmental) and Coastal and Marine and Consultancy teams on an exciting range of projects located both within UK waters and Internationally.

You will be experienced and confident in the description and interpretation of Quaternary sedimentary sequences, with a solid understanding of marine and terrestrial depositional environments and processes.

A key part of the role will involve supporting, supervising, and providing training to colleagues as well as providing advice to teams across Wessex Archaeology and our external clients. In addition, you will contribute to tender documents under the supervision of the Geoarchaeology Manager, contribute to technical peer review and quality assurance and act as a subject matter expert in defined areas of expertise.

Experience interpreting marine geophysical data would be advantageous. Previous experience of deposit modelling is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Technical accountability for the Marine Geoarchaeology portfolio.
  • Act as lead geoarchaeologist on marine projects, including supervising and supporting colleagues, undertaking interpretation and reporting, technical peer-review and quality assurance.
  • Prepare client reports, including liaising with other specialists.
  • Ability to act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and proactively engage with and advise colleagues and clients concerning technical aspects of projects.
  • Project management under the direction of the Geoarchaeology Manager, including responsibility for tender costs, project budgets and timescales/delivery.

Previous experience of project management would be desirable, but training will be provided. The precise responsibilities of the role will depend on the grade at which the successful candidate is appointed.

Essential certification 

  • Hold a post-graduate qualification in Geoarchaeology, Quaternary Science, Geology, Geomorphology or a closely related discipline.
  • Confident in describing and interpreting Quaternary superficial sediments.
  • Sound knowledge of marine and terrestrial depositional environments and processes.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
