Role Summary

WSP is seeking an Assistant Consultant – Marine Archaeologist to support our UK Cultural Heritage & Archaeology (CH&A) Team. The appointment is key to development of our growing CH&A Team in India (Noida and Bengaluru offices) that supports the UK Team. The role will require a combination of technical expertise and knowledge of archaeology and heritage.

As an Assistant Consultant you will be expected to provide input to heritage projects from the marine and terrestrial archaeological perspective for planning consent applications, prepare archaeological desk-based assessments and EIA scoping reports. We are particularly interested in candidates that have experience of working on archaeological projects related to development and infrastructure works with field work experience including designing mitigation strategies and Written Schemes of Investigations. Preferably, you will have a specialism, skill or area of knowledge that contributes to the strategic development of our heritage team and developing service line.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated team player, who is able to meet the challenges of a busy consultancy environment. You will be conscientious with high attention to detail and good command of written and spoken English. You will be an integral member of the team, delivering the highest standards of technical work and aiding the continued success of the Cultural Heritage & Archaeology Team. You will have a strong awareness of Health and Safety and risk management.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant would be responsible for the following, though not limited to:

  1. Producing or contributing to terrestrial and marine archaeological desk-based assessments
  2. Providing archaeological inputs into cultural heritage reports (constraints and opportunities mapping, written scheme of investigations, heritage statements etc.)
  3. Preparing post-excavation project plans
  4. Assist in archaeological fieldwork project management remotely
  5. Managing Historic Environment data for projects
  6. Assist in preparing fee proposals

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Archaeology, with specialism in marine

  • Experience in archaeological fieldwork

  • Knowledge of universally accepted principles relating to marine archaeology and heritage (institutions like IUCN, UNESCO)

Lead OR Supervisory Archaeologist

Lead OR Supervisory Archaeologist to support a contract with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) West Coast Region (WCR). These are full-time, remote positions that are anticipated to begin on July 1, 2024. Hiring for these positions will be contingent on contract award.

Careers

Cultural resources may be impacted on historic properties on federal, state, private, or tribal lands. Therefore, NMFS seeks support to serve as a professional archaeologist and lead historic preservation for NMFS grant programs within the WCR. The employee would lead NMFS implementation and compliance with federal historic preservation legislation, especially the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and the Archaeological Resource Protection Act. The employee will serve as liaison between NMFS, Tribes, and State Historic Preservation Officers to consult on cultural resource issues and prepare and conduct educational and outreach activities, presentations, and events that provide information on NMFS compliance with the NHPA when applicable. The employee will be responsible for creating procedures for historic preservation compliance that meet the requirements of law and regulation. Moreover, they will conduct research at libraries, agencies, and other institutions for archaeological, historic, and ethnographic information, and create and implement a cultural resource administrative program for NMFS, and update and maintain cultural resource hard-copy and computer records tracking project status, sites, inventories, consultations, and artifact collections.

And/or coordinate with NMFS grant program staff, grant recipients, partners, Tribes, other federal agencies, and other archaeologists to manage the Section 106 process and cultural resources that may be impacted by NMFS undertakings on historic properties on federal, state, private, or tribal lands. Consult with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs), and other interested parties concerning the effects of undertakings on historic properties. Conduct research at libraries, agencies, and other institutions for archaeological, historic, and ethnographic information. Serve as a liaison between NMFS and Tribes and NMFS and SHPO. Set up and execute consultation with these parties on all cultural resource issues.

State of Florida Underwater Archaeologist

Conducts and completes research as a team member of the Underwater Archeology Section. Increases the ability of the Bureau of Archaeological Research to survey, record and interpret known and unknown sites throughout the state. Conducts submerged cultural resource training programs for state land managers and law enforcement personnel. Surveys for submerged historic and prehistoric cultural resources on state owned or managed lands and within Florida’s Aquatic Preserves. Reviews Aquatic Preserves management plans.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Maritime Studies or related field.

Candidate must be a scientific diver (AAUS or equivalent) with the ability and willingness to dive in blackwater and low visibility conditions.

Candidates must have experience conducting underwater archaeological surveys including remote sensing data collection and processing, mapping, recording, excavation and report writing.

Candidate must have experience in public speaking and communicating with members of the public.

Candidate must have boat experience that includes launching, trailering and operating.

Candidate must have experience conducting submerged cultural resource surveys.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
