As a Research Archeologist, you will perform the following duties:

– Conduct applied research and analysis of maritime archeological resources. Serve as principal investigator for archeological field studies to determine eligibility of sites for National Register of Historic Places. Conduct, coordinate, and implement field research on maritime and cultural heritage based research in ocean and great lakes environments. Conduct underwater research, including scuba diving and/or use of specialized underwater research technology to the research of oceanic sites. Publish/disseminate research results in professional journals and forums.
– Aid sanctuary management by writing and reviewing activities, strategies and site management action, including sanctuary management plans and relevant environmental review analyses. Prepare and publish cultural landscape assessments and research on historic properties. Prepare nominations for national register of historic places. Assist and advise on review of permit applications to prohibit activities that impact sanctuary resources.
– Promote the identification, preservation, and conservation of maritime and cultural heritage resources. Implement maritime and cultural heritage protection, education, outreach, and research programs. Develop outreach products and policy documents. Represent the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries in professional organizations focused on cultural resource research, preservation and management.
