Job Summary  

The Marine Archaeologist will conduct underwater archaeological surveys and research as part of our cultural resource projects. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of underwater archaeology, conservation techniques, and relevant laws and regulations pertaining to underwater cultural heritage.

Compensation: 

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.  

  • $70,000-$90,000 per year 
  • FLSA Exempt 

Duties/Responsibilities  

  • Conducts and leads underwater archaeological surveys and excavations. 
  • Analyzes artifacts and other materials recovered from marine environments. 
  • Prepares detailed site reports and documentation for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Collaborates with other archaeologists, scientists, and specialists in marine biology, geology, and environmental science.
  • Develops and implements management plans for the preservation of underwater cultural resources.
  • Assists in the preparation of proposals and grants related to marine archaeology.

Required Skills/Abilities  

  • Proficiency in standard underwater archaeological methods, including surveying, mapping, and excavation. 
  • Experience in scuba diving is essential, as much of the work is conducted underwater. 
  • Knowledge of sonar, magnetometers, and sub-bottom profilers to detect and map submerged sites. 
  • Skills in recovering artifacts from marine environments and implementing conservation techniques to preserve them. 
  • Strong capability to conduct research, analyze archaeological data, and interpret findings. 
  • Understanding of local, national, and international laws and guidelines related to underwater cultural heritage and archaeology. 
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks in challenging underwater environments. 
  • Ability to address unexpected challenges that arise during underwater excavations, such as equipment failure or adverse weather conditions. 
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication, essential for preparing reports, presenting findings, and collaborating with team members and stakeholders. 

Education and Experience  

  • Required: Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field with a specialization in marine or underwater archaeology 
  • Required: At least seven (7) years of working experience in underwater archaeology  
  • Required: Experience in commercial diving  
  • Required: PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) 

Physical Requirements  

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
