The Department of Archaeology and History of Art at Koç University invites applications for two full-time faculty positions beginning in September 2016: one junior position at the rank of Assistant Professor and one senior position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Candidates for both positions are expected to have a PhD specializing in nautical or underwater archaeology or to have an established record of post-PhD research activity in the same.
Located in İstanbul, Turkey, Koç University is a highly reputable English-instruction research university (http//http://www.ku.edu.tr). The Department of Archaeology and History of Art offers undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on various world civilizations, with a focus on the civilizations of Anatolia and its neighbors. The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) hosts several research centers concerned with archaeology, art history, and history. These include the Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED), located in Beyoğlu, İstanbul; the Vehbi Koç and Ankara Research Center (VEKAM), located in Ankara; the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), located in Antalya; and the Koç University-Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (GABAM), located at Koç University Rumelifeneri campus.
Based on the successes of these research centers and the desire to become a leader in Turkey in the area of nautical and underwater archaeology, Koç University plans to establish a research center for nautical archaeology in honor of the late Mustafa V. Koç, the Chairman of the Board of Koç Holding. The mission of this soon-to-be-established center is to support and promote research, heritage-management, and conservation activities in nautical and underwater archaeology, to foster high-impact research by Turkish and international scholars, and to make Koç University the leading international center for nautical and underwater archaeology in Turkey. The new center is expected to have substantial resources for the support of several post-docs and several PhD students as well as for the support of field activities.
The successful candidates are expected to teach one to two courses per semester on subjects of their expertise in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art. Additionally, the successful candidates are expected to contribute to the development and activities of the new research center for nautical archaeology. The successful candidate for the senior position will be expected to serve as the Director of the new center.
