The doctoral project, “Submerged Dependencies,” focuses on marine governance, cultural heritage, environmental justice, ocean studies, and power/dependency relations in coastal and underwater spaces. Research themes include marine protected areas, submerged environments, cultural heritage and custodianship, security regimes and militarised maritime spaces, biodiversity conservation, climate justice, participatory mapping, multimodal ethnography, archival research, oral histories, policy analysis, restitution, reparations, and postcolonial marine governance.
This is a fully funded 4-year doctoral position based in Bonn, Germany. The position is part-time (65%) and paid under TVöD EG13, with a gross annual salary of approximately €39,000–€55,000. The PhD will be awarded by the University of Bonn and is embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment with mentoring, workshops, conferences, fieldwork support, research stays abroad, skills training, and collaborative supervision.
Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree with very good grades in critical social sciences or humanities. Suitable backgrounds include anthropology, sociology, environmental history, archaeology, maritime/ocean studies, critical heritage studies, and related fields. Vox Optima is seeking a Naval Archivist to support a client in the Hampton Roads area. This is a new position, and the individual will be responsible for performing an initial inventory and identiifying what objects and materials are to be kept and which can be downsized.
Responsibilities
The Archivist shall shall establish and document a comprehensive digital inventory and cataloging system using the government-furnished Axiell Collections software and/or other software.
The Archivist shall shall develop and implement a plan for the systematic inventory and processing of all historical materials, starting from a near-zero baseline. This includes, but is not limited to, artifacts, photographs, graphics, video, books, magazines, artwork, and documents dating from the organization’s founding to the present day.
The Archivist shall be responsible for the ongoing accessioning and cataloging of new materials acquired by the shipyard, ensuring the archival system remains current.
Responsibilities are defined in accordance with standards set by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).
Qualifications and Skills

Beyond that, Texas has seen many flags shape and reshape its culture and history. Between the Spanish and French Empires, the Mexican and Texas Republics, the United States, and the Confederacy, the geographic region that is Texas has long served as a backdrop through which global history has played out. Texas’ sense of place is embodied through its symbolism, architecture, and iconic landscapes. Its material record reflects the place-bound stories of those who experienced, responded to, and negotiated life within its boundaries.
The year 2027 marks the 60th anniversary of the SHA annual conference, an event that was born deep in the heart of Texas. Texas has played a role in some important firsts in the society’s history: the first annual conference was held at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas in 1967. The organizing committee is excited to host the SHA conference back where it all began in Texas, and we look forward to reflecting on the influence that Austin and the state of Texas have on the future of archaeological praxis.

We know it can sometimes be hard to find a job and volunteering isn’t always practical or affordable, so Brave Island is really excited to have teamed up with a range of different organisations to offer a number of paid placements.
The Maritime Museum Assistant Placement is a six month opportunity hosted by The Maritime Archaeology Trust at The Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum . We’re looking for a young person interested in learning more about working within a museum. The placement holder will learn about the different roles involved in running a small museum with a focus on marketing and collections.

Practical infoThis placement is open to those aged 18-25 for the duration of the placement. It is one day per week for 6 months, and you will be paid a stipend of £100/day. You will have the opportunity to work across, or choose between, the established Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum in Arreton and the new unopened future museum site in Yarmouth.
