Key responsibilities and tasks

  • Historical research and compilation of desktop studies

Essential

  • Strong academic background. Qualified to at least Degree level in Underwater Archaeology or equivalent.

  • Current full driving licence with own transport. Frequent travel required.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for programmes of work.
  • Excellent research and report writing skills.
  • Highly motivated and flexible, with a professional and diligent attitude.

Desirable

  • HSE/HSA recognized diving qualification and commercial diving experience
  • Powerboat certificate

The Nautical Archaeology Society of Mexico, SubArqMx and the Gulf of California Maritime Sustainability Initiative led by Octavio Del Rio and Michael Murray are presenting an exciting unique opportunity for those interested in a career or volunteer activities in maritime archaeology and marine science. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Following the success of the University of Geneva Terra Submersa expedition in 2014, the summer school offers an intensive course on a new, multidisciplinary scientific field: Continental Shelf Prehistoric Research (CSPR).

The course aims at educating postgraduate students and young scientists to move across the boundaries of marine geosciences and archaeology, in order to shed light on the interaction between our ancestors with the dynamically changing environment.

Practically, the summer school will take place in Porto Cheli (Greece) and include field trips to the prehistoric site of Franchthi Cave and the surrounding area. Its objective is to give the opportunity for young archaeologists and geoscientists to:

  • Learn about marine geophysical (multibeam, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler), marine geological methodologies as well as data acquisition, post-processing and interpretation
  • Understand paleoclimate and sea-level changes and their interaction with isostatic and tectonic  vertical movements
  • Link climate, sea level and environmental changes to the archaeology of people who lived on and migrated across the continental shelf
  • Familiarize with key themes in coastal prehistory

Virginia’s Maritime Heritage Subgrant Program

Virginia’s Maritime Heritage Subgrant Program

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources has received $200,000 from the National Maritime Heritage Grant Program to create a subgrant program to support the preservation and conservation of collections, properties, and objects associated with underrepresented histories related to maritime trade in Virginia. We anticipate awarding 3-5 projects ranging in size from $10,000-$150,000.

DHR is prioritizing projects focused on maritime collections and objects associated with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) history that can be completed by September 2025. Relevant collections and objects could include but are not limited to: vessels that participated in trade or were used to harvest resources for trade; archaeological collections that include trade goods and help us understand the impact of trade on social and economic structures; maritime objects such as trading vessels and shipwrecks; etc.

Liaison duties include preparing briefing materials on NHPI matters and on complex Bureau policies that could impact the NHPI Communities, participating in consultation and engagement meetings with leaders of NHPI Communities and the Department of the Interior, and facilitating consultation and engagement meetings under Executive Order 13175, the Departmental Manual, and relevant consultation and engagement policies.
