HJF is seeking an Underwater Project Archaeologist to provide professional and scientific assistance pertaining to DPAA’s partner-related activities. Responsibilities

The Department of History invites applications for a nine-month appointment as an Assistant Professor in History. This tenure track faculty position will begin August 14, 2023. Probationary teaching load is 2/2. Area of specialization is within American Maritime History. ISPRS Working Group II/7 wants to contribute to the global goals for an ocean science for sustainable development, by fostering geomatic methods for through- and under-water data acquisition and processing.

WG II/7 will promote an interdisciplinary exchange in the fields of environmental monitoring and ecology, heritage recording, industrial measurement and hydrodynamics, with a view to increase our current knowledge of the underwater world and its response and resilience to, and impact on climate change. For this purpose, WG II/7 will boost the development, testing and operability of 3D image and range-based sensors and techniques for measurement and virtualization of inland, coastal and open sea underwater environments, also through the effective use of autonomous and human guided vehicles.

WG II/7 will organise and support in-presence and on-line workshops and events on through- and under-underwater photogrammetry and related disciplines, seeking for contributions of experts from the marine archaeology, engineering, robotics, marine science, fisheries and aquaculture communities. WG II/7 activities include collecting, organising and sharing benchmark datasets to stimulate genuine competition between researchers towards innovative solutions to problems relevant to the community.  To make its actions more effective, WG II/7 will work in close collaboration with ICGW II/I and the other WGs from TCII.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH), Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), is pleased to welcome you to the Fifth Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage to be celebrated in Gwangju, Korea the 13 to 18 of November 2023.

We warmly invite academics and other relevant professionals to submit session proposals. Researchers are invited to submit a 300-word abstract and session title before November 15th 2022, together with the name of the session organizer, affiliation and email address. All session abstracts (and subsequent paper and poster abstracts) should be submitted here for consideration. The Asia-Pacific Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage (APConf) aims to address management and protection strategies of underwater cultural heritage in Asia and the countries of the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the 21st Century, facilitate regional cooperation through the development of academic, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and governmental networks in the Asia-Pacific region, and provide a forum for discussion of new research, as well as technical and ethical issues related to underwater cultural heritage, maritime and underwater archaeology. A wide range of people involved with underwater cultural heritage are encouraged to participate, including those from universities, government agencies, museums, NGOs, IGOs, the private sector and the community. They will be responsible for coordinating their session within the conference program including recruitment, evaluation and selection of presenters in coordination with the organizing committee. Session organizers will be expected to play a role in the conference proceedings publication. 

The conference organizing committee can help interested individuals make contact with other potentially suitable organizers or presenters. Session organizers will be expected to attend the conference in person and to present an individual, or jointly written, paper in their own or another theme or session. 

We are particularly keen on receiving session proposals that touch upon one or several keywords of the conference, but we will also accommodate other sessions that focus on topic such as UCH in different regions in Asia-Pacific, UCH Values, Politics, and Law, Nautical Technology, UCH management and so on. Eligibility and criteria

Through the scheme, the Foundation aims to support projects related to maritime archaeology beyond the HFF region. Therefore, these grants do not need to have any regional focus, but encompass the breadth of maritime archaeological research, including:

  • Shipwrecks
  • Submerged landscapes
  • Harbour sites and coastal geomorphology
  • Coastal / intertidal archaeological survey
  • Maritime cultural landscapes studies including interdisciplinary research
  • Maritime ethnography
  • Development and use of survey techniques such as marine remote sensing
  • Theoretical approaches to maritime archaeological research
  • Artefacts that specifically relate to seafaring activities such as boats, anchors, rigging, etc
  • Research relating to outreach and community engagement with maritime archaeology

Thus, covering all aspects of human interaction with the sea. Awards are offered in support of any aspect of research, including travel, fieldwork, archival- and desk-based research and subsequent publications arising from the research funded. Grants are not available to fund attendance at conferences or seminars.

All projects supported through the scheme should contribute to research into maritime archaeology, and should also include training opportunities, and public and community engagement where possible. Grantees are also encouraged to disseminate the results online and through publication.
