Wessex Archaeology is the largest independent archaeological practice in the UK, and a registered charity which aims to promote the advancement of education, the arts, culture, heritage, and science. We are a market leader in the provision of historic environment services nationally and internationally, with UK offices in Salisbury, Sheffield, Meopham, Bristol and Edinburgh.

The role
We are seeking an experienced Conservator to be responsible for carrying out conservation work on objects recovered during archaeological excavations and by our coastal and marine department. You will identify, co-ordinate and deliver conservation requirements from artefact recovery to museum deposition.

This is an opportunity to work as part of a team that includes technical experts from a wide range of disciplines including fieldwork, artefact and environmental specialisms, marine archaeology, and public engagement, and to contribute to the delivery of some of the most exciting archaeological projects in the UK.

In this role you will be required to work collegiately as part of the established Finds team but the ability to work independently will also be essential. You will share knowledge and provide advice and training to staff across the organisation in order to raise awareness of conservation requirements.

As well as collaborating with the Post-excavation and Coastal & Marine teams on the day-to-day treatment of objects, you will help to develop an external service offering x-radiography, collection surveys, condition assessments and a range of conservation treatments.

You will be practical, adaptable, and good at problem-solving, equal to the task of caring for a large and varied assemblage of archaeological material and developing innovative ways of doing so.

W1 Junior Professor with tenure track to W2 LBesG for “Maritime Antiquity”

https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/636231

This professorship is aimed at junior researchers in an early career phase and with extraordinary potential for a further academic career.

The professorship will be filled in a joint appointment procedure with the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum – Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Archäologie (RGZM). In case of a successel transfer to a permanent professorship (Bes.Gr. W 2 LBesG), it is intended that the position holder will be granted a leave of absence to take over a leading position at the Rheinisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz (RGZM; so-called Jülich model).

The aim of the joint appointment is the permanent establishing of the research focus on nautical history and archaeology at both institutions, as well as the institutional connection of the Department III and the research focus area TRANSMARE of the University of Trier with the RGZM.

It is desired that the candidate conducts research in the research fields of ancient seafaring and maritime trade as well as the maritime-influenced ancient economy and society, and that she/he will be involved in the development of digital research methods. The prospective candidate should actively participate in the development of the new research focus Roman Archaeology and Maritime Antiquity (FoRuM), which was jointly founded by the University of Trier, the RGZM and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE). In this context the position holder will be involved in the TRANSMARE Institute. She/he will develop targeted research projects within the framework of the aforementioned research organisations and solicit third-party funding. A willingness to cooperate constructively with the Center for Ancient Studies at the University of Trier (ZAT) is a prerequisite.

We are looking for a candidate who will continue the research on nautical archaeology of the RGZM. The participation in the further development of the RGZM’s research and outreach activities will constitute an important field of activity for the successful candidate in both phases of the professorship and not only in connection with the leave of absence to the RGZM and the assumption of a leadership function at the Museum für antike Schifffahrt.

The position holder will contribute to the courses and teaching on offer at the University, in connection with the University’s profile-forming research focus of „maritime economics“.

Thus, young scientists will be trained and introduced to the research units anchored at the University of Trier (TRANSMARE) as well as at the RGZM and in the joint research network
