Wessex Archaeology is the largest independent archaeological practice in the UK, and a registered charity which aims to promote the advancement of education, the arts, culture, heritage, and science. We are a market leader in the provision of historic environment services nationally and internationally, with UK offices in Salisbury, Sheffield, Meopham, Bristol and Edinburgh.
The role
We are seeking an experienced Conservator to be responsible for carrying out conservation work on objects recovered during archaeological excavations and by our coastal and marine department. You will identify, co-ordinate and deliver conservation requirements from artefact recovery to museum deposition.
This is an opportunity to work as part of a team that includes technical experts from a wide range of disciplines including fieldwork, artefact and environmental specialisms, marine archaeology, and public engagement, and to contribute to the delivery of some of the most exciting archaeological projects in the UK.
In this role you will be required to work collegiately as part of the established Finds team but the ability to work independently will also be essential. You will share knowledge and provide advice and training to staff across the organisation in order to raise awareness of conservation requirements.
As well as collaborating with the Post-excavation and Coastal & Marine teams on the day-to-day treatment of objects, you will help to develop an external service offering x-radiography, collection surveys, condition assessments and a range of conservation treatments.
You will be practical, adaptable, and good at problem-solving, equal to the task of caring for a large and varied assemblage of archaeological material and developing innovative ways of doing so.
