HJF is seeking a Historian to support the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) located in Honolulu, HI. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to DPAA. This is a telework position. US citizenship is required.

Gathers historical data from various sources to answer questions about historical events. Collects and evaluates source information from written records, physical artifacts, and other types of evidence during their investigations. Analyzes and interprets historical information to determine its authenticity and significance.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist the DPAA Partnerships and Innovation Directorate in establishing and maintaining systems for monitoring partnership historical research projects, investigation efforts, and field cases, among other Directorate activities.
2. Responsible for ensuring the status of all these matters are captured in Directorate and Agency tracking systems and databases and will notify the appropriate Directorate personnel of any delays or issues associated with these activities based on analysis of project execution.
3. Assist with planning and ensuring the successful implementation of partnership efforts relating to all aspects of the accounting mission, to include supporting partner reporting needed by the Scientific Analysis Directorate, the Regional Directorates, and other Agency offices.

UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL 2021

An introductory course in research, documentation and protection of archaeological underwater sites related to the UNESCO World Heritage „Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” in Austria.

Please note: Due to the current situation of the pandemic, changes to the programme in general and also to the course and accommodation locations cannot be ruled out.

Students and early career scientists, who are interested or involved in the topic of prehistoric lakeshore sites, are welcome to participate in an international field school on underwater archaeology at Lake Mondsee in Austria.

Participants engage in practical training related to the current underwater excavation at the Neolithic lakeshore site Mooswinkel and surveys at Lake Mondsee in Upper Austria. The course program includes excursions to local museums and archaeological sites, as well as scientific lectures and discussions. Participants with a diving license can participate in surveys, coring activities and the excavation underwater. However, it is not necessary to be a diver to participate in the field school! The field school programme draws on the recent years of underwater archaeological excavations and monitoring of underwater heritage in Austria.

The field school is organized by Kuratorium Pfahlbauten – the Austrian Management of the UNESCO World Heritage “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” in cooperation with the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH, the Natural History Museum Vienna and the University of Vienna.

As a Cultural Resources Coordinator, you will perform the following duties:

• Cultivate cultural stewardship, partnerships, and conservation through the creation, oversight, and coordination of the cultural heritage program, with particular emphasis on Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islands cultures.
• Coordinate with outreach and education specialists to develop and execute education, public outreach, and engagement communications and events that may occur at various sites. Represent the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) at conferences, meetings, symposia and other events, and establishes professional contacts with other governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and promote Ocean Conservation and ONMS as a career path within a variety of community outreach events and formats.
• Develop trainings, orientation programs, and internal policies and guidance for ONMS staff to create an awareness regarding cultural norms, proper engagement protocols, and the importance of sanctuaries and monuments to native and indigenous communities.
• Coordinate all regulatory activities within a region that may impact cultural resources. Analyze, develop and implement procedures and administrative documents required by regulations, executive orders, or Federal policy, such as management plan reviews, sanctuary designations or expansions, or other activities requiring engagement or assessment of impacts to cultural resources.
• Prepare, compile, and maintain comprehensive control of all reports, documents, maps, files, papers, databases, records, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and any other information associated with the cultural heritage or resources within a region.
