The course will consist of theoretical and practical (hands on) instruction in underwater documentation and archaeological excavation. The main aim of the course is to allow the participants acquire the best possible knowledge of basic underwater archaeology research techniques.

The course is organized with financial support of the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Croatia. Practical organization is coordinated by ICUA in cooperation with lecturers and instructors from Römisch-Germanische Kommission (RGK) from Germany and other guest lectures. Theoretical lessons will be held in ICUA premises. Practical instruction will take place in the frame of archaeological researches on the roman harbor site Sukošan, Zadar environs. The basic archaeology course will be complemented by courses in specialty diving according to the requirements of the SSI / PADI system.

The maximum number of trainees will be limited to 4 participants.

Expected profile of participants: archaeologists (including researchers, or university students enrolled in study courses for 2nd level degrees) with some diving experience, as well as experts in different disciplines (conservators, geologists, marine biologists, etc) who are interested in developing multidisciplinary skills and participating in underwater archaeology researches. Language skills: participants must be proficient in the English language, since English will be official language of the course.

A PhD position in Archaeology is hereby announced. This postgraduate position covers four years and is financed with employment as a doctoral student. The PhD candidate in archaeology will work jointly with a PhD candidate from the research program for Natural Resources and Sustainable Development at the Department of Earth Sciences within the frames of the interdisciplinary project Fisheries and coastal development in small island context – the past, present and future. This project investigates marine resources and coastal zones in a long-term perspective with the focus on the use of marine assets, loss of biodiversity and climate change. A common research question is how the coastal zone and the marine resources, especially fisheries, have developed and changed over time and what their current status is. The results will form a base to develop strategies for a future sustainable management of the costal zones and fisheries. The special assignment for the PhD candidate of Archaeology is to analyse archaeological assemblages of fish bones from various time frames, and to connect the results to an analysis of global and local climate change data and various forms of managements of these resources. The project focuses on Gotland Island in the Baltic Sea but with comparative case studies from small island contexts in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In this interdisciplinary project, the successful applicant will interact closely with the PhD student from the Department of Earth Sciences as well as with other PhD students in the research school.

MNMS conducts scientific research, monitoring, exploration, education and outreach activities with the goals of preserving submerged resources and providing awareness of maritime heritage. The ROS III is required to safely and efficiently operate offshore, conducting marine science research aboard vessels. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Meeting the demands of offshore scientific research operations aboard various research vessels
• Providing dive support, archeological field support, research;
• Providing education, outreach, science communications and outreach coordination.
• Support science activities at the site including projects such as remote sensing surveys, historical research, and SCUBA diving. The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) is soliciting ocean exploration proposals to support projects that provide data and information that may inform ocean-related segments of the U.S. economy through mapping, characterization, and exploration of the deep seafloor and water column of the U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as well as marine cultural heritage in U.S. waters. Proposals are being requested on the following three topics:

1. OCEAN EXPLORATION. Ocean exploration to inform management, sustainable use, and conservation of marine resources in poorly explored deep ocean areas of the U.S. EEZ. Areas proposed for exploration and/or initial characterization must be at a minimum water depth of 200 m or more.

2. MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY. Discovery and characterization of underwater cultural heritage to inform decisions on preservation and seabed use, and to identify sources of potential environmental impacts. Marine archaeology proposals can be conducted in any water depth within the U.S. EEZ.

3. TECHNOLOGY. Application of new or novel use of existing ocean technologies or innovative methods that increase the scope and efficiency of acquiring ocean exploration data and improve usability of and access to ocean exploration data. Proposed technologies must be applicable to water depths of 200 m or greater, though testing in shallower water or lab-based test facilities will be supported. Technology testing may occur outside of U.S. waters.
