NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND OFFERS FELLOWSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, AND GRANTS

The Naval History and Heritage Command, Department of the Navy, is offering the following competitive incentives to pursue original work in the history of the United States Navy for the academic year 2014-2015.

The Rear Admiral John D. Hayes Pre-doctoral Fellowship in U. S. Naval History.
The fellowship includes a stipend of $10,000 for the fellowship year (September 2013- June 2014) plus a travel grant for travel twice to the command’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, not on active duty in the armed forces; be enrolled in a recognized graduate school; have completed requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation by June 30, 2014; and have an approved dissertation topic in the field of U.S. naval history.

The Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper Research Grant.
The grant of up to $2,500 is intended to assist a scholar in the research or writing of a book or article by helping to defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and document duplication, related to the research process. Proposals that have high promise of filling gaps in the literature of U.S. naval history that the Naval History and Heritage Command has identified as of higher interest are eligible for consideration. The command’s list of priority subjects in U.S. naval history is posted on the command’s website, www.history.navy.mil, and is regularly updated. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and hold a Ph.D. degree from an accredited university, awarded no later than March 31, 2013, or equivalent attainment as a published author.

The Samuel Eliot Morison Naval History Scholarship.
The scholarship provides a $5,000 cash award to one active duty commissioned officer of the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps with demonstrated leadership potential and high academic qualifications who is already pursuing graduate study in history, international relations, or a related field. The award is to help pay for expenses related to research, travel, and the purchase of books or other educational materials.

Professor of Maritime History

Queen Anne’s Revenge Conservator/Archaeologist 1

Position reports to the QAR Lab Director/UAB Chief Conservator and will work cooperatively with others in the QAR Project team.  Position holder will undertake all aspects of work for documentation, investigation, and conservation of archaeological artifacts recovered from a marine underwater environment. Primary focus will be on post recovery treatment of artifacts from the shipwreck site of Queen Anne’s Revenge (QAR) through to their transfer to museum. The position is based at the NCDCR QAR Lab, located at East Carolina University- approx. 10 miles west of downtown Greenville, NC. Other duties include, but are not limited to, public education and outreach, training and supervision of students, and laboratory maintenance and administration.

Experience and education in archaeological artifact conservation required, preferably of material recovered from underwater marine environments. Familiarity with laboratory practice and protocols, vigilance in complying with safe and proper handling of equipment and materials is essential. Ability to lift heavy objects using mechanical devices and use of industrial shop equipment, including x-radiography recommended. Proficiency with personal computer applications essential. Ability to work as part of a team essential.

Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field and two years of progressive experience in archaeology, or archaeological preservation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Management prefers a Master’s degree in Conservation (Archaeological Artifacts), or graduation from a four year college course or university with a major in conservation, anthropology or related field and at least two years of progressive experience in material conservation or archaeological conservation.

Underwater Archaeologist

The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist 1). 2014 NOAA Ocean Exploration Funding for Marine Archaeology

2014 NOAA Ocean Exploration Funding, Thematic Priorities include;

Marine Archaeology: Interdisciplinary exploration, discovery, and initial documentation of significant submerged cultural heritage sites, at any water depth, including shipwrecks, submerged (previously subaerial) landscapes, aircraft, and other maritime or submerged cultural sites.

Marine Archaeology: OER supports standards for conducting marine archaeology projects and expeditions such as those enumerated in the Annex Rules of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. Archaeological surveying must be at an appropriate resolution to detect and characterize archaeological resources (<1m).

OER supports only the early stages, i.e., search, discovery, and characterization, of archaeological investigation.

At present, OER anticipates a total of approximately $3,000,000 will be available through this announcement. Depending on specifics of proposals received, OER hopes to be able to support approximately 8-15 awards, in the amounts of $10,000 to $2,500,000, through this solicitation.

Complete, maximum two-page, pre-proposals are required for all categories and must be received by 5:00 pm (EDT) on October 15, 2013. Full proposal submissions must be received by 5:00 pm (EST) on December 20, 2013.

2014 Maritime Archaeology Fieldschool

2014 Flinders University Maritime Archaeology Field School, open for external applications

External applications are now open for the 2014 Flinders University Maritime Archaeology Field School held on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, which is scheduled from 2-16 February 2014.

The Maritime Archaeology Field School provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, recording, excavation and conservation. Some lectures and videos will be provided on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists. The Field School will include practical exercises, field work and associated lecture/seminars.

The course is open to non-Flinders student for the cost of tuition. Credit for the course may be applied to home universities. This is a great opportunity for staff development training for current practicing professionals. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum seeks a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Collections Assistant. This person will report to the Collections Manager and work with the larger Exhibits Department to fulfill the mission of the Intrepid Museum. The Collections Assistant will support all aspects of the Collections Program including accessioning, policy development and exhibition preparation. Within the Collections Program, the Collections Assistant will focus on the artifact collection. This position requires organization, strong communication, physical agility and a can-do attitude.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assist with the day to day collections tasks which may include: housing and preparation of documents and artifacts, fabrication of mounts, exhibit installation, preventive conservation and research assignments.
Cataloging of incoming object acquisitions and new collections items discovered onboard.
Participate in the photographing, scanning and digitization of artifacts, documents and photographs.
Enter detailed, appropriate and accurate data into the Museum’s database, TMS.
Assist in the relocation and proper housing of artifacts.
Participate in collections review meetings to determine proper status of various collection items.
Aid in the research and development of collections policies.
Perform other duties as required by management
The ideal candidate will have a BA/BS, MA preferred in Museum Studies, History or other relevant discipline and a minimum of 1-2 years museum registration and/or collections experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. This person will have experience with object handling and preventative conservation; knowledge of accepted museum registration and collections management procedures and practices; experience with collections management databases (TMS preferred), cataloguing standards and controlled vocabularies. The candidate must be technically literate, including experience with digital photography and the processing and management of digital media. He/she must have strong organizational, interpersonal and computer skills. The candidate must be able to maneuver through dimly lit narrow passageways, climb up/down steep ladders and move heavy collections objects with assistance. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.
