NASOH Paper Prize

Head down to Pensacola to attend NASOH in May.

The North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH) announces the establishment of the Clark G. Reynolds Award to be presented to the author of the best paper by a graduate student delivered at its annual conference. The prize will consist of assistance in publishing the essay in THE NORTHERN MARINER, the peer-revewed journal co-sponsored by NASOH and the Canadian Nautical Research Society, a membership in NASOH, a handsome plaque and the author’s choice of ten books published by the University Press of Florida. The Cape Cod Maritime Museum is seeking volunteers/interns to assist the Director/Curator, Mark Wilkins, in installing current exhibit entitled:  “Transformations:  from Farmer to Seafarer – Cape Cod from 1639-1739.” Installation ongoing through April, 2008. Additional help needed over the summer in organizing library, building, maintaining collections space, and much more. Intro to Underwater Archaeology offered

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College will offer an Introduction to Underwater Archaeology course during spring semester 2008, beginning Jan. 11 at the Great Lakes Campus.

This course, which does not require field work, will provide students with an introduction to theory, method, technologies, and practice in underwater archaeology, with a focus on prehistoric and historical sites, worldwide and in the Great Lakes, inland lakes, and streams of the State of Michigan. Course content will draw primarily from anthropology and the applied social or behavioral sciences. A Ph.D. instructor of record and knowledgeable guest lecturers will present the curriculum in a classroom at the Great Lakes Campus of Northwestern Michigan College.

Maritime History Internship
Historic New England seeks an intern for Winter/Spring 2008 to conduct and present research on maritime history related to the organization’s Hamilton House, located in South Berwick, Maine. Responsibilities will include research and development of a maritime walking tour of the Hamilton House property, which will include an overview of local maritime activity from the earliest settlement to modern times. The tour will concentrate on activity that took place on the grounds during the Hamilton occupation in the late 18th century. The intern will be responsible for developing a tour outline and a related packet of information to be used by Historic New England staff, giving the tour during the family festival “A Sailor’s Life for Me!” and possibly training seasonal staff to give the tour. Graduate and undergraduate students in history, museum studies, American and New England studies, and maritime studies are encouraged to apply. The intern will work at Historic New England’s Hamilton and Sarah Orne Jewett Houses in South Berwick, Maine, although some work will be conducted independently off-site. This internship is unpaid but may be completed for course credit. Associate Curator
Connecticut River Museum, Essex, CT is seeking an Associate Curator to work with the retiring Senior Curator for one year during the installation of a long-term exhibition and re-accreditation. The Associate would then assume all curatorial duties and responsibilities including research, exhibition development and implementation, collection development, education support and collections care and management for well-focused library, mss, photo, object and small craft collections devoted to history in the Connecticut River Valley. The Connecticut River Museum is an accredited, regional museum located in historic steamboat warehouse on spectacular waterfront location. The Museum, founded in 1974, has four galleries, off-site collection storage, aggressive exhibitions and public programs schedule and a small staff. A hardworking, highly competent candidate will have a degree in American History, an advanced degree in History or Museum Studies and three to five years experience in collections management and exhibition development. A multitasking, team player with installation skills, computer competencies, speaking and writing excellence will find challenges here. Grant writing experience and a background in maritime field and/or environmental history considered a plus. First year salary ranges low to mid-30’s. Applicants should have a three-year bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or related discipline. If applicants are to dive then qualifications are required. International students with suitable qualifications are eligible for admission into the program.
