NOAA 2021 OE Grant

https://www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=326583

NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration & Research (OER) is soliciting proposals for ocean exploration in waters under U.S. jurisdiction, including the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). OER is interested in projects that provide data and information that may inform ocean-related segments of the U.S. economy through mapping, characterization, and exploration of the deep seafloor and water column of the U.S. EEZ as well as marine cultural heritage in U.S. waters. OER is soliciting proposals for three themes:

OCEAN EXPLORATION. Ocean exploration to inform management, sustainable use, and conservation of marine resources in poorly explored deep ocean areas of the U.S. EEZ. Areas proposed for exploration and/or initial characterization must be at water depths of 200 m or more.

TECHNOLOGY. Application of new or novel use of existing ocean technologies or innovative methods that increase the scope and efficiency of acquiring ocean exploration data and improve usability of and access to ocean exploration data. Proposed technologies must be applicable to water depths of 200 m or greater, though testing in shallower water or lab-based testing will be supported. Technology testing may occur outside of U.S. waters.

MARINE ARCHAEOLOGY. Discovery and characterization of underwater cultural heritage to inform decisions on preservation and seabed use, and to identify sources of potential environmental impacts. Marine archaeology proposals can be conducted in any water depth within the U.S. EEZ.

Informational documents on this funding opportunity are accessible through the OER website: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/about/funding-opps/welcome.html.

For the purpose of this opportunity, costs for ship time and/or other ocean data collection platform support (remotely operated vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, etc.) are considered rental costs and therefore are not included in Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC).

The exception is for institutions with a federal negotiated Indirect Cost (IDC) Rate agreement that covers these charges.

Note: Ship time on the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer will not be funded through this announcement.

The following checklists are provided to aid in preparing your application.

Pre-proposal stage (due June 18, 2020):

1. OER FFO cover sheet

Call for manuscripts: Special Issue “Advanced Technologies for Maritime and Underwater Archaeology”

https://www.mdpi.com/journal/jmse/special_issues/maritime_underwater_archaeology

Dear Colleagues,

Underwater cultural heritage (UCH) is a crucial asset for the knowledge of humankind’s history and traditions. It is tangible evidence of past human life that has to be protected for ensuring its accessibility to present and future generations.

The documentation, preservation, and dissemination of UCH is an open challenge that is strongly interdisciplinary because it involves collaboration among various experts from different sectors like archaeology, geology, biology, marine science, engineering, robotics, computer science, and numerous other disciplines.

This Special Issue intends to collect original and high-quality research articles and technical notes devoted to the knowledge of underwater materials and promote innovative methodologies, applications, and emerging technological solutions on the subject of materials that lie underwater.

Submissions are welcome that contribute to providing a multidisciplinary forum for cutting-edge scientific and technological issues in materials science, underwater archaeology, archaeometry, cultural heritage, alteration and aging, climate impact, case studies, and other related fields involving the large and varied community of experts from around the globe working in the underwater cultural heritage field.

Contributions are invited on the following topics:

  • 3D imaging technologies for the documentation of underwater sites;
  • Sensing, diagnostic, and monitoring technologies for UCH;
  • Advanced data processing technologies applied to the conservation and monitoring of UCH;
  • Characterization and diagnostics of underwater materials;
  • Conservation state assessment and conservation-restoration technologies for underwater archaeological sites and objects;
  • Case studies dealing with conservation and valorization of UCH;
  • Digital technologies for the exploitation of UCH.

The SS United States Conservancy, a national nonprofit organization founded in 2004, is dedicated to protecting, revitalizing, and promoting the historic ocean liner SS United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in America and current holder of the transatlantic speed record. “America’s Flagship” transported four U.S. presidents, business moguls, movie stars, tourists, artists and authors, and immigrants, and the vessel is one of the sole surviving iconic ocean liners from the golden age of trans-Atlantic travel.

The SS United States Conservancy purchased the SS United States in February of 2011 and is currently working to secure her future as a mixed-use, stationary development which will include a SS United States museum. The Conservancy is moving full speed ahead on its goals of building its permanent collection of archives, art, and artifacts from the SS United States. Our dedicated staff is always diligently exploring how to best preserve, celebrate, and disseminate the range of items in the Conservancy’s collections through not only various social media platforms but also through unique opportunities and partnerships with museums, institutions, and other organizations.

Guided by a prominent board of directors and advisory council, the Conservancy currently has a small team based in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York. The organization has members hailing from all 50 states and 22 nations worldwide.

Archaeological Conservation Free Webinar

Conservation of Cultural Heritage Recovered from Terrestrial and Marine Sites

In 2019, Dr Ian MacLeod visited the NZ Branch of the ACA to deliver a guest lecture series. For those of you who weren’t able to catch it, Dr MacLeod has kindly agreed to present this lecture as a webinar.

Description

Our island nations are littered with historic shipwrecks which have been recording the microenvironment of the oceans since 1622 off the Western Australian coast. A study of the layers of decay recorded on degraded metal objects provides climate and corrosion scientists with a unique insight into the changing conditions on the seabed and with data on seawater temperatures.

After 40 years of applied research, Dr MacLeod has developed a series of novel conservation treatments which have extended the lives of thousands of artefacts. Overseas projects include the in-situ conservation of the WWI submarine HMAS AE2, which penetrated the Dardanelles on the first ANZAC Day and so saved the lives of hundreds of New Zealand and Australian troops. Work on early bronze age sites in Turkey has shown that in-situ measurements of pH, voltage and chloride ion activities in soil profiles has enabled prediction of treatment needs of bronze objects recovered from those historic sites.

This webinar will take place at 5:00 PM AEST.
