CRDIP Cultural Resource Management Assistant

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE CRDIP Cultural Resource Management Assistant interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service at George Washington Memorial Parkway in McLean, Virginia.

This is an opportunity to engage in a number of cultural resource program area activities in addition to having an opportunity to focus on a specifically defined project or projects. Projects can include assisting with archeological investigations, conducting historical research, gaining experience with archival and library records and materials, CRM files, helping with the curation of museum collections, performing architectural conservation projects on historic structures, and assisting with cultural landscape management tasks.

Compensation: The ACE CRDIP member will receive $440/week paid out every two weeks.

Project Goals: The member will learn about NPS Cultural Resources Management Guidelines, the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties, and other CRM procedures.

Educational experiences would include having the selectee learn:

  • Introductory archeological skills and concepts while assisting with projects that require archeological field and lab work.
  • To read plans, drawings, construction documents, and maps.
  • To assist with research such as reviewing planting plans, vista and viewshed plans, landscape documents, and other similar materials to assess the current conditions of GWMP cultural landscapes and work with landscape architects to improve conditions.
  • Records management and help with the continued organization, management, cataloging, and filing of records materials to assure that all GWMP cultural resource management records, archives, and library resource files and materials are appropriately accounted for under NPS Guidelines.

Opportunities will occur to attend project meetings and perform work to help with rehabilitation of historic structures, monuments, and memorials, working with the architectural conservator and historical architect. Opportunities will exist for reviewing archived drawings and plans and historic maps to help identify potential historic resources and ascertain current proposed project impacts on these resources.
Position Description: The George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) CRDIP member would be able to engage in a number of cultural resource program area activities in addition to having an opportunity to focus on a specifically defined project or projects, as this will provide the broadest experience in the wide range of activities undertaken by a park Cultural Resources Management (CRM) Program.

Specific Projects could include:

  • Assisting with Phase I Archeological Investigations ahead of park development projects.
  • Providing background research on cultural resources and historic properties for Section 106 compliance documents.
  • Analyzing the historic 1932 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Planting Plan of the GWMP to help survey for missing elements to identify restoration areas in the cultural landscape.
  • Conducting preservation maintenance conservation work on park memorials.
  • Conducting maritime history research related to underwater archeological sites within the park.
  • Helping to develop a stronger web presence for the GWMP CRM Program.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills and experience through their resume and application and be in pursuit of obtaining or within two years of having obtained a Bachelor/Master/PhD degree in history, anthropology, cultural resource management, archaeology, public history, or other relevant field.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be 18 to 35 years of age and are in pursuit of a higher education degree or within two years of graduation.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS.
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences;

  • Must have a strong interest in the cultural resources field.
  • Must have the ability to conduct historical research.
  • Ability to engage in occasional physical activities associated with field projects.

There is a clear need to characterize seafloor features and their ecological role to develop proper management and avoidance strategies based upon their ecological community structures.   Objectives include documenting and mapping sites. Salary Information
