Underwater Archaeologist

The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist 1). The position is full-time with benefits and will work out of our Field Office in Charleston, South Carolina. We anticipate keeping the job announcement open until the end of October. We hope to offer the position by the end of November with a start date at an agreed upon time shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will work with a staff of four members and complement our efforts to preserve the maritime archaeological legacy in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina.

Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist 1):
The incumbent reports directly to the Sport Diver Archaeology Management Program (SDAMP) manager. The employee will work in tandem with the supervising archaeologist to meet the goals of the program, specifically as relating to education and outreach. The employee will act as the administrator for the hobby diver licensing process of SDAMP as well as manage all databases relating to the program. The employee will assume the role of the secondary archaeologist for the Charleston Office, and act as principal/co-principal investigator on SDAMP projects as designated by the SDAMP manager. The employee will also manage all Charleston Office equipment as well as act as a dive safety officer for the Maritime Research Division (MRD). This position requires periodic travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings.

2014 NOAA Ocean Exploration Funding for Marine Archaeology

2014 NOAA Ocean Exploration Funding, Thematic Priorities include;

Marine Archaeology: Interdisciplinary exploration, discovery, and initial documentation of significant submerged cultural heritage sites, at any water depth, including shipwrecks, submerged (previously subaerial) landscapes, aircraft, and other maritime or submerged cultural sites.

Marine Archaeology: OER supports standards for conducting marine archaeology projects and expeditions such as those enumerated in the Annex Rules of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. Archaeological surveying must be at an appropriate resolution to detect and characterize archaeological resources (<1m).

OER supports only the early stages, i.e., search, discovery, and characterization, of archaeological investigation.

At present, OER anticipates a total of approximately $3,000,000 will be available through this announcement. Depending on specifics of proposals received, OER hopes to be able to support approximately 8-15 awards, in the amounts of $10,000 to $2,500,000, through this solicitation.

Complete, maximum two-page, pre-proposals are required for all categories and must be received by 5:00 pm (EDT) on October 15, 2013. Full proposal submissions must be received by 5:00 pm (EST) on December 20, 2013.

2014 Maritime Archaeology Fieldschool

2014 Flinders University Maritime Archaeology Field School, open for external applications

External applications are now open for the 2014 Flinders University Maritime Archaeology Field School held on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, which is scheduled from 2-16 February 2014.

The Maritime Archaeology Field School provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography, recording, excavation and conservation. Some lectures and videos will be provided on the various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists. The Field School will include practical exercises, field work and associated lecture/seminars.

The course is open to non-Flinders student for the cost of tuition. Credit for the course may be applied to home universities. This is a great opportunity for staff development training for current practicing professionals. Project Managers Coastal and Marine Archaeology

Wessex Archaeology are seeking Project Managers to join our successful Coastal & Marine team in Salisbury on a permanent basis, delivering a comprehensive range of consulting and contracting services to marine development and curatorial clients. You will report to the Director, Coastal & Marine.

An experienced heritage/marine professional, you will be educated to degree level in an appropriate subject and ideally a post graduate qualification in maritime archaeology. RFP: A Comparative Analysis of an Oil Spill on the Biota Inhabiting Several Gulf of Mexico Shipwrecks: Archaeological Analysis

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), on behalf of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), intends to competitively award a contract entitled “A Comparative Analysis of an Oil Spill on the Biota Inhabiting Several Gulf of Mexico Shipwrecks: Archaeological Analysis”. This procurement is being conducted in accordance with FAR Part 15. The BSEE, Acquisition Operations Branch, is the contracting office for this procurement and the resultant contract administration. The Government intends to award a cost-reimbursement type contract, subject to the availability of funds, for this effort. The period of performance of the resultant contract is anticipated to be 36 months. The estimated cost of this study is between $356,000 and $450,000. The applicable NAICS Code is 541990, All Other Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services. All potential offerors must be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) (www.sam.gov) in order to receive Government contracts.

This study will be sponsored by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP). NOPP is a collaboration of federal agencies to provide leadership and coordination of national oceanographic research and education initiatives. BOEM is working in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and BSEE to support and promote increased understanding of the effects of oil and/or dispersant exposure on shipwrecks and their resident biota. This study will require the deployment of a 3-D scanner (using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), stationary tripod, or other devices) at each of the shipwreck sites in water depths up to 5,000 feet. It will also require the contractor to conduct an analysis of ROV video footage (newly and previously collected) and updating of existing archaeological site plans to demonstrate degradation and changes in site formation over time. The study area is the Central and Western Planning Areas of the Gulf of Mexico. Twenty (20) days of ship time aboard Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) research vessels, operating personnel, and an ROV will be made available to the contractor in FY 2014. In addition, two ten-day (10) cruises are anticipated in Fall 2013 and Spring or Summer 2014. Vessel costs will be shared by BOEM and the NRL through the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) program. In-kind support will be provided by BSEE. Team efforts among academia, industry, and government participants are required (at least 2 of the 3). Cost sharing or proposals augmenting ongoing partnership efforts are strongly encouraged. Continual communication and coordination between the contractor and BOEM, NRL, and BSEE are required throughout the duration of the project. This study consists of three (3) main tasks: (1) Conduct field investigations of each site: (2) Analysis and data interpretations; and (3) Public outreach.

Position Summary: The Archaeological Director provides leadership to all operations of the LCMM’s Maritime Research Institute (MRI) with the intent of maintaining MRI’s reputation for sound scholarship and expert underwater cultural resource management.  The position is responsible for identifying, securing and executing compliance-related and grant-funded underwater archaeological projects, archaeological publications and exhibits, and archaeological conservation projects. 

The Archaeological Director reports to LCMM’s Executive Director, is a member of LCMM’s senior staff, and oversees a staff of five, plus volunteers and interns.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensure all MRI operations and projects are consistent with the mission and core values of the LCMM. 
• Oversee all aspects of MRI operations.
• Secure and execute archaeological, conservation, exhibit(s) and publications projects.
• Provide primary source content for the development of LCMM exhibits, website and publications. 
• Oversee the submission of grant proposals for underwater archaeological and conservation projects, and the execution of and reporting on grant funded work. 
• Attend board of directors meetings and participate in board committees at the request of the CEO.
• See that rigorous dive safety standards are maintained in dive operations at all times
• Support all museum initiatives, including fundraising, programs and events.
• Work with CFO to develop and manage MRI budgets.
• Share MRI underwater archaeological results with LCMM staff and the public.
• Represent LCMM in public forums via meetings and presentations.
• Be willing and able to travel 10 to 20 weeks per year.

Job Requirements and Skills:
Education:
• Master’s degree or PhD in History, Anthropology or related field.  Specialization in Nautical or Maritime Archaeology preferred.
• Dive master or better dive certification.
• DAN O2 Administration, First Aid and CPR
• HAZWOPER 40 (or ability/willingness to acquire training)

Experience:
• Minimum of 7 years experience in the cultural resource management as it applies to submerged cultural resources. 
• Knowledge of historic preservation laws, including Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
• Knowledge of dive safety regulations including EM 385-1-1.
• Experience listing sites on the National Register of Historic Places.
• Proficiency in small boat operations, USCG Captain’s license preferred.
• Proficiency in MS Word, MS Office, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.  GIS experience is desirable. 
• Proficiency in the preparation of Diving Safety Manuals, Dive Operations Plans, Activity Hazards Analysis, Emergency Management Plans, and Float Plans. 
• Demonstrated record of scholarship.
• Proficiency in the use of underwater remote sensing technology including side scan sonar, marine magnetometers and remotely operated vehicles.
• Proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of underwater remote sensing data.
• Demonstrated successful grant-writing track record.

Maritime Archaeologist

Southeastern Archaeological Research, Inc. (SEARCH) is seeking a full time Principal Investigator to complement our Maritime Division for multiple projects throughout the United States, Caribbean, and Pacific. This position can be based out of the Orlando, Gainesville, Jacksonville, or Pensacola, FL, Washington, DC, or New England SEARCH offices and offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.

Successful candidates must be M.A. level (M.A. in hand, no ABT considered) or above and be experienced on the water. Must demonstrate Ten (10) years or more experience on your CV. Must be eligible to be certified as a Registered Professional Archaeologist.

You need to demonstrate:
• Project Management (multiple projects/types), client management, business development, and the ability to supervise multiple maritime archaeologists, project archaeologists, and field staff
• Knowledge in the use and analysis of CHIRP sub-bottom profilers, dual frequency side scan sonars, magnetometers, and hydrographic echo sounders;
• Proficiency in the operation of small boats and the ability to troubleshoot small engines, electronics, pumps, and trailers;
• Certification in SCUBA diving, knowledge of surface supplied air diving, willingness to learn surface supplied air diving. Detailed certifications must be included on your CV.

The successful applicant must have a developed capacity for attention to detail, be organized, able to work well on simultaneous projects, and be able to meet deadlines. Experience in cultural resource management, terrestrial archaeology, and the preparation of deliverables for the DoD and USACE is preferred. Applicants should have a demonstrated proficiency in HyPack, SonarWiz, MS Word, MS Office Pro suite, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. GIS experience is desirable. Applicants must be available to travel to locations worldwide for extended periods of time and must be able to receive government security clearances.
