Position Summary: The Archaeological Director provides leadership to all operations of the LCMM’s Maritime Research Institute (MRI) with the intent of maintaining MRI’s reputation for sound scholarship and expert underwater cultural resource management. The position is responsible for identifying, securing and executing compliance-related and grant-funded underwater archaeological projects, archaeological publications and exhibits, and archaeological conservation projects.
The Archaeological Director reports to LCMM’s Executive Director, is a member of LCMM’s senior staff, and oversees a staff of five, plus volunteers and interns.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Ensure all MRI operations and projects are consistent with the mission and core values of the LCMM.
• Oversee all aspects of MRI operations.
• Secure and execute archaeological, conservation, exhibit(s) and publications projects.
• Provide primary source content for the development of LCMM exhibits, website and publications.
• Oversee the submission of grant proposals for underwater archaeological and conservation projects, and the execution of and reporting on grant funded work.
• Attend board of directors meetings and participate in board committees at the request of the CEO.
• See that rigorous dive safety standards are maintained in dive operations at all times
• Support all museum initiatives, including fundraising, programs and events.
• Work with CFO to develop and manage MRI budgets.
• Share MRI underwater archaeological results with LCMM staff and the public.
• Represent LCMM in public forums via meetings and presentations.
• Be willing and able to travel 10 to 20 weeks per year.
Job Requirements and Skills:
• Master’s degree or PhD in History, Anthropology or related field. Specialization in Nautical or Maritime Archaeology preferred.
• Dive master or better dive certification.
• DAN O2 Administration, First Aid and CPR
• HAZWOPER 40 (or ability/willingness to acquire training)
• Minimum of 7 years experience in the cultural resource management as it applies to submerged cultural resources.
• Knowledge of historic preservation laws, including Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
• Knowledge of dive safety regulations including EM 385-1-1.
• Experience listing sites on the National Register of Historic Places.
• Proficiency in small boat operations, USCG Captain’s license preferred.
• Proficiency in MS Word, MS Office, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. GIS experience is desirable.
• Proficiency in the preparation of Diving Safety Manuals, Dive Operations Plans, Activity Hazards Analysis, Emergency Management Plans, and Float Plans.
• Demonstrated record of scholarship.
• Proficiency in the use of underwater remote sensing technology including side scan sonar, marine magnetometers and remotely operated vehicles.
• Proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of underwater remote sensing data.
• Demonstrated successful grant-writing track record.
• Excellent supervisory and client service skills.
• Attention to detail; ability to lead and follow processes and procedures from beginning to end.
• Ability to lead teams and desire to work as part of an interdependent team.
• Strong analytical, organization and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated project management skills, including excellent follow-through for multiple projects at multiple locations; ability to work independently.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to utilize data of all kinds to inform the decision-making process.
