Drowned Paleolandscapes – a geological record for assessing landscape and environment response to postglacial sea level rise and climate change

Research area and project description:
andidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of marine geophysical data and sediment cores. The call is for two PhD positions.

The successful candidate will be part of a newly established research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to grow our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.

The two PhD candidates will be working closely together and will be an integrated part of the research group. They will focus on establishing a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, describing the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types and linking seismic morphologies to various paleoenvironments. The project also involves possibilities of numerical modeling approaches including machine learning.

The results from the project will provide information on the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. Such information is relevant for future climate mitigation and adaptions, and for a sustainable use of the coastal zones. Additional impact may relate to offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.

The project involves close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The two PhD projects will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.

The research project and the two PhD positions are funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree or at least one year of a Master’s degree in geology, geophysics or similar, by July 1st 2024. In addition, the candidate will have demonstrated analytical skills, a good command of English, excellent interpersonal skills, an open attitude to interdisciplinary research, and the ability to work in international collaborations. Previous experience with seismic and acoustic data and sediment cores, software for seismic interpretation and processing, and integrative approaches for combining geophysical, geotechnical, and geological data is highly desired.

State of SC Underwater Archaeologist

The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia seeks an Underwater Archaeologist (ARCH-II).  The position is full-time with benefits and will work on the main campus in Columbia.  The job announcement will remain open until filled.  We hope to offer the position by late April with a start date at an agreed upon time shortly thereafter.  The successful candidate will work with two other Division staff members and complement efforts to preserve the underwater archaeological legacy in the lakes, rivers, and coastal waters of South Carolina.

Underwater Archaeologist (ARCH-II):

Incumbent reports to the State Underwater Archaeologist, Head, Maritime Research Division. Undertakes underwater archaeological management and research by administering the review and compliance of state-wide development projects; planning and conducting archaeological research; developing public educational and outreach offerings; overseeing the technical and logistical aspects of survey and diving operations; supervising the use, operation, and maintenance of Division assets including boats, vehicles, and equipment, and training staff and volunteers on their proper use; and supporting other activities as directed by the supervisor to meet Division, Institute, University, and State goals. The incumbent will also meet and maintain SCIAA’s Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements and act in a dive supervisory capacity for the Division. The employee will also supervise, as needed on archaeology projects and in an office environment, employees, temporary employees, graduate students, interns, and volunteers. Position requires periodic travel within the state for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings. The position is based in Columbia.

Call for Applications: Funded MA Positions in Maritime Archaeology

The Koç University Mustafa V. Koç Maritime Archaeology Research Center (KUDAR) is seeking candidates for funded MA positions to begin in the Autumn of 2024.  We are seeking applicants who propose a research agenda that compliments the center’s strengths in maritime archaeology in the Mediterranean, which includes desk-based and field research, as well as topics in conservation science.

In addition, we also seek applicants who are motivated to pursue the following topic:

Marine and coastal sites on the World Heritage List are found around the world.  Very commonly, these sites are valued for their environmental characteristics or terrestrial cultural heritage, whereas associated underwater cultural heritage is often coincidental or not considered at all.  As part of the ongoing efforts of a working group in the International Council on Museums and Sites (ICOMOS) presently investigating this imbalance between underwater cultural heritage (UCH) sites and the World Heritage List, we are seeking a pro-active, motivated individual to pursue MA research incorporating three elements:

  1. Identifying which marine or coastal sites on the World Heritage List may contain UCH, although this is not evident in either their inscription files or management plans;
  2. Identify the challenges of inscribing or inserting marine or coastal heritage sites into the World Heritage List;
  3. Based upon the results of 1 and 2, make recommendations regarding how UCH may be better integrated into the World Heritage List.

This scholarship, worth $15,500 per year, is a top-up scholarship for a graduate research student to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), in the field of Australian Maritime Archaeological Conservation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • meet the entry requirements for a Faculty of Arts PhD and have applied to complete a PhD in the field of Australian Maritime Archaelological Conservation
  • have achieved a minimum weighted average mark of 75% in the final year subjects, or University of Melbourne equivalent, with a minimum result of 75% for the research component
  • have not already completed a research qualification at the equivalent level as the course for which a scholarship is sought

Selection criteria

Eligible applicants are automatically considered through their PhD application to complete a PhD in the field of Australian Maritime Archaelogoical Conservation, then scored and ranked according to:

  • their academic achievement in completed tertiary degrees
  • their PhD research proposal

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) conducts research, monitoring, education, and outreach activities with the goals of protecting the Great Lakes and their rich history. Qualified personnel are required to safely and efficiently conduct marine research and provide program support through fieldwork and public engagement.

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) provides support to TBNMS and is seeking applicants with experience in marine research operations and management. 

The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise working with maritime heritage resources and conducting other marine science and resource protection operations. Prior experience as a certified scientific diver is highly recommended. 

This position may include the following activities depending upon applicant’s qualifications: 

· Conduct historical, archaeological, and Great Lakes research

· Assist with remote sensing surveys and processing

· Utilize GIS to support sanctuary programs 

· Support resource protection operations (mooring buoys) 

· Write scientific and technical reports.

· Support sanctuary data management.

· Support sanctuary education, outreach, and interpretation programs.

Requirements

******As CPC is looking to hire potentially more than one person, it is expected that a single candidate may not have all of the following qualifications, but will ideally have a mix of skills that meets many of the following requirements to support the team at TBNMS:

Research and On-water Operations

· Experience conducting historical and archaeological research, including scientific diving

· Experience conducting marine science. 

· Experience conducting remote sensing surveys and post-processing 

· Experience with underwater photography, videography, and/or photogrammetry. 

· Experience with marine technology (observation systems, sampling, and ROVs)

· Experience with data management.

· Experience organizing and planning research projects. 

· Experience writing National Register of Historic Places nominations.

· Experience drafting technical reports, articles, and research summaries. 

· Experience working aboard and operating small research vessels. 

· Experience maintaining field research equipment 

CPC is looking to expand diving capacity at TBNMS, from new dive team members to the Unit Diving Supervisor. CPC is seeking candidates with experience that meets one or more of the following: 

Diving 

· Experience engaging in scientific diving operations; certification to the level of Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver (or equivalent) from a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) and meeting the eligibility requirements to enroll in NOAA Diver training as outlined in the NOAA Diving Standards and Safety Manual 

· Certification to the level of Divemaster or Instructor in a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) along with prior completion of a scientific diver training course such as one offered at American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).

· Experience supporting a scientific diving unit including administration, planning, and operations. 

· Experience with dive equipment maintenance. 

· Experience with technical diving including utilization of closed-circuit rebreathers. 

Outreach, Partnerships, and Funding 

· Experience communicating research/science to technical audiences, students, divers, and the public through writing, public speaking, and other activities. 

· Experience in securing outside funding. Grant writing, grant management. is required.

HFF Grants Supporting Maritime Archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean

Expression of Interest for Grants over £10,000

Since inception, the Foundation primarily supports regional projects which focus on maritime archaeology or underwater cultural heritage undertaken in the countries where Honor Frost worked. Broadly, this is the eastern Mediterranean, specifically Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria and also Egypt including the Red Sea. The Foundation is keen to support projects which will foster strong collaborations with regional partners, particularly those with local training opportunities. The Foundation also offers broader support for activities in this field, including education, training and workshops, conferences with a regional involvement, conservation work, museum exhibitions and public engagement.

We have recently introduced an expression of interest form for grants over £10,000. If accepted for development, potential grantees would be expected to work with HFF staff to develop the projects to reflect the aims of both parties.

To promote a better understanding of the environment we so love to explore, the Central Ca1ifornia Council of Diving Clubs, known as Cen Cal, is offering our annual California Diving & Aquatic Studies Scholarship. This award was previously named the Seaviews/Cen Cal Marine Science Scholarship.

The award of $2,000 is to support a student engaging in studies of underwater habitats. Aquatic related programs in the disciplines of biology, physical sciences, marine education, maritime archaeology, historical and social aspects of marine resources or the science of diving are relevant for consideration.

RFP: VDHR Marine Remote Sensing Survey, Siege of Yorktown Battlefield

Subsequent to an award from the National Park Service from the Semiquincentennial Grant program, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) is soliciting proposals for a marine remote sensing survey of state-owned subaqueous bottomlands contained within the Siege of Yorktown battlefield. This survey is designed as part of a phased comprehensive survey for this nationally significant landscape. While survey in the area has been previously undertaken and resources have been documented, no comprehensive survey has been completed for this resource. Sunken vessels associated with the 1781 Siege of Yorktown are known to exist within the boundary but have not been located. Additionally, submerged cultural materials from other periods are likely to exist given area’s intensive occupation and maritime landscape. Results from this survey will assist with the management of cultural materials contained within the submerged bottomlands of the Commonwealth.

Contractor shall provide archaeological remote sensing within the provided survey boundaries to meet or exceed remote sensing guidelines outlined in the

No bottom disturbance is anticipated during the execution of the survey. Additionally, no artifact collection is anticipated.

Survey parameters listed in the Instrumentation and Procedures section are minimum standards required to complete this survey, additional instruments or procedures may be included by the Contractor.

Contractor shall not sub-award any significant portion of this survey work, such as the collection of marine remote sensing data. Sub-awarding for support equipment and services such as a survey vessel or housing is permitted.

Marine Geophysics Trainee

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Society and MSDS Marine, will soon be undertaking a geophysical survey of a Protected Wreck site – HMS Colossus, which foundered in 1798. The survey has been supported by Historic England and will consist of magnetic and sidescan sonar surveys. The survey will be undertaken during the week 20-27 April 2024, and be based in the Isles of Scilly.

CISMAS are offering a sponsored training place on the team to a student, licensee or interested individual to act as assistant to the geophysics supervisor.  The placement includes transport between Penzance and Scilly, and shared accommodation on Scilly.

The placement is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to gain hands on experience in marine survey techniques.

This opportunity offers the chance to work as part of the dynamic GeoServices team which together technical experts from a wide range of science disciplines to provide specialist input into projects and deliver a range of services to our clients by applying Earth Science techniques to a wide range of archaeological projects.

The successful applicant would assist in the production and delivery of a range of geophysical projects, through processing, interpretation and reporting on a range of geophysical data (sidescan sonar, magnetometer, multibeam bathymetry and shallow seismic data). Experience of offshore acquisition of geophysical data would be advantageous.
