Mainsheet, a peer-reviewed journal of multidisciplinary maritime studies published by Mystic Seaport Museum, is seeking submissions for an upcoming issue on “Challenges in Maritime Archaeology.”

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeologists (https://files.hudexchange.info/resources/documents/hp-fact-sheet-secretary-%20interior-professional-qualification-standards.pdf).
  • The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus:
  • 1. At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management;
    2. At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology, and
    3. Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
    In addition to these minimum qualifications, a professional in prehistoric archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the prehistoric period. A professional in historic archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the historic period.
  • For Texas: also “must meet the Professional Qualifications and Requirements listed in TAC §26.4, which also provides the required qualifications for Professional Archeologists (both terrestrial and underwater) and Geomorphologists or Geoarcheologists.   • There are additional requirements specified in TAC §26.4 beyond the federal requirements.
  • In addition, to survey in Texas an antiquities permit is required that must be held by the archaeologist on the project.
  • Experience interpreting side scan sonar, magnetometer, and subbottom profiler data and assisting historic and/or prehistoric potential.
  • Experience overseeing fieldwork.
  • Experience reporting on archaeological interpretation.

Marine Geologist/Geophysicist |On-Call| Pensacola, Florida

Join our team as an on-call or full-time Marine Geologist/Geophysicist in Pensacola, FL, or remotely (depending on your qualifications and availability). You will be part of a growing and close-knit group, supporting Marine Archaeology and Environmental Operations both in the U.S. and internationally. We seek self-motivated individuals with a strong passion for professional growth and a desire to stay up to date with the latest technological advancements. Your main responsibilities will include acquiring, processing, and interpreting high-resolution marine geophysical data, including sidescan sonars, sub-bottom profilers, magnetometers, and geotechnical samples. Experience with multibeam data collection and processing is an asset. This role requires travel and work in various environments.

Responsibilities  

  • Contribute to an ever-growing team by adding a strong marine geological and geophysical skillset. 
  • Participate in offshore and coastal marine archaeology and environmental projects. 
  • Act as field or processing marine geophysicist or geologist in coastal and offshore environments. 
  • Plan field operations with the use of various navigation and GIS software . 
  • Maintain and design daily field logs and safety logs. 
  • Collect and interpret geophysical data and analyze geotechnical samples, including but not limited to other scientific data. 
  • Provide quality data checks for geophysical and geotechnical data. 
  • Communicate technical standards and operations through proposals, reports, presentations, or to other individual personnel such as associates, community, or clients. 
  • Analyze and comply with operational standards and procedures. 
  • Work in and show experiences with various geophysical equipment including sidescan sonars, sub-bottom sonars, magnetometers as well as geotechnical equipment. Multibeam is preferred. 
  • Work to analyze sediment samples. 
  • Perform equipment tests before field operations, as well as onsite and office troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of marine equipment. 
  • Perform mobilization, calibrations/checks, surveys, and demobilizations. 
  • Show a high level of safe practices with all marine operations. 
  • Scientific Diving, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster is a plus. 
  • Show willingness and desire to grow oneself professionally while staying up to date with today’s technological needs. 
  • Open to travel and extended field assignments in offshore or coastal environments. 
  • Show ability to work with a wide range of personnel including those of varying cultures, and religions from various regions around the globe.

Required Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of relevant professional work experience in marine, land, and aerial geophysical systems 
  • Degree in geology, marine science, marine archaeology, or related field of study. 
  • 3+ years of experience with analysis and technical report writing 
  • Working knowledge and understanding of operations and maintenance of geophysical, marine and land equipment. 
  • Experience troubleshooting and repair of electronic and software programming. 
  • Experience in cable splicing and soldering, use of diagnostic equipment, and communications systems. 
  • Experience with boat handling and working on larger vessels 
  • Experience with geophysical systems (including chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometer)  
  • Proficiency towards marine geophysical data acquisition and interpretation software such as SonarWiz, Hypack, Qinsy, Oasis Montaj and Discover. 
  • Proficiency in the use of QGIS, ArcGis, or Surfer software. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Valid state driver’s license. 
  • Travel to survey projects both within the US and overseas. 
  • Current U.S. Passport 

Preferred Skills 

  • Fluent in various acquisition and processing software such as Hypack, Qinsy, Sonarwiz, Kingdom, Radex, and/or Oasis Montaj. 
  • Experience with Multibeam and high-resolution GPS units such as PosMV 
  • Marine geotechnical experience (vibracore, sediment analyses, etc.) is a plus. 
  • Strong ability to work as part of an ever-growing team to assist team members, lead, follow or work independently. 

Physical And Mental Requirements and Work Environment 

  • Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems. 
  • May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison oak, etc. May require use of respiratory equipment. 
  • Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or work around heavy construction equipment. 
  • Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text). 
  • Mental requirements include ability to organize one’s own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately. 
  • Some work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and requires sustained sitting and use of fingers, hands, and arms to operate a computer and perform keyboard entry of data or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation). Must also be able to operation standard office equipment (phone, copy machine, FAX machine, etc.) 

Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap Project Coordinator

The primary purpose of the position is to lead the development and implementation of an Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap for the state through a comprehensive engagement process. This position will act as the lead for the department on offshore wind energy policies, procedures, and review of proposed projects. Floating offshore wind energy, globally, is an emerging industry and a potential additional source of clean energy. There is substantial wind energy development potential in state and federal waters off the coast of Oregon. There are equally important aspects of Oregon’s oceans, ecosystems, and coastal communities that could be impacted, positively or negatively, by offshore wind energy development including the environment, fishing, Tribal cultural resources, and coastal economies. As directed by House Bill 4080 (HB 4080) in the 2024 legislative session, DLCD is responsible for working with the Governor’s office, representatives of tribal nations, other agencies, local governments, and interested parties on the completion of a Roadmap. 

A Roadmap is an opportunity for a diversity of interests in Oregon to establish a more transparent, equitable, and community-driven process for planning, siting, developing, and operating floating offshore wind energy projects and their associated infrastructure. The Roadmap Project Coordination will be responsible for leading the state to conduct an open, transparent, proactive, and comprehensive dialogue around floating offshore wind energy that represents all of Oregon’s interests in state, tribal, regional, and federal planning and decision making resulting in a Roadmap. This position will lead the implementation elements of the Roadmap that DLCD is tasked to complete including possible amendments to the Territorial Sea Plan part 5.

Job Summary 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) conducts research, monitoring, education, and outreach activities with the goals of protecting the Great Lakes and their rich history. Qualified personnel are required to safely and efficiently conduct marine research and provide program support through fieldwork and public engagement.

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) provides support to TBNMS and is seeking applicants with experience in marine research operations and management. 

The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise working with maritime heritage resources and conducting other marine science and resource protection operations, including strong experience as a certified scientific diver. 

This position includes the following activities: 

· Conduct historical, archaeological, and Great Lakes research.

· Coordinate the diving unit, including administration, planning, and operations.

· Maintain dive equipment.

· Support resource protection operations (mooring buoys). 

· Assist with remote sensing surveys and processing.

· Support sanctuary education, outreach, and interpretation programs.

Requirements

Diving 

· Experience engaging in scientific diving operations; certification to the level of Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver (or equivalent) from a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) and meeting the eligibility requirements to enroll in NOAA Diver training as outlined in the NOAA Diving Standards and Safety Manual.

· Certification to the level of Divemaster or Instructor in a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) along with prior completion of a scientific diver training course such as one offered at American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).

· Experience supporting a scientific diving unit including administration, planning, and operations. 

· Experience with dive equipment maintenance. 

· Experience with technical diving including utilization of closed-circuit rebreathers. 

Research and On-water Operations

· Experience conducting historical and archaeological research, including scientific diving.

· Experience conducting marine science.

· Experience with underwater photography, videography, and/or photogrammetry is preferred.

Historic England’s (HE) marine and coastal activities encompass heritage in the sea, affected by the sea, or related to the sea.  Our advice informs and is informed by a dynamic array of policy areas across government, including UK-wide and international dimensions.  This post supports HE’s Corporate Plan with respect to our advice to government departments and public bodies on the development, effectiveness and impact of policy relating to Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH).

HE’s activities relating to UCH encompass teams working in several specific areas: designation, licensing, marine planning, heritage information and materials conservation.  This temporary post is intended to progress the development of policy in areas of focus that extend beyond these operational ones, to clarify their scope, collate evidence and frame potential solutions.

Areas of work may include, for example, approaches to managing UCH subject to degradation from natural processes, reporting mechanisms for discoveries made by the public, increasing the visibility of public value arising from UCH, integrating UCH with nature recovery, marine protection and fisheries management, and improving protocols for seabed mapping of UCH.

In this role, you may be called upon to spend a proportion of your time working on other areas of policy development in response to changing priorities.

The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home – Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth and Cambridge.

What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Maritime Archaeologist, who will work with the Foundation and NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) as the primary point of contact for maritime archaeology and history. Specifically, the Maritime Archaeologist will be responsible for assisting with the sanctuary designation process in the Eastern Region.

In 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration directed the Department of Commerce to move forward with the designation process for five nominated national marine sanctuaries. Three of those designations are located in the ONMS Eastern Region: Hudson Canyon National Marine Sanctuary, Lake Erie Quadrangle National Marine Sanctuary, and Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. This designation effort supports President Biden’s America the Beautiful initiative by expanding the National Marine Sanctuary System, addressing inequitable access to the outdoors and supporting locally led conservation.

This is currently offered as a two-year term position. Position may be extended based on continued availability of funding. The Maritime Archaeologist supports the scope of a federal cooperative agreement award between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries that focuses on public engagement in the designation process of new national marine sanctuaries. What You’ll Do

  • Support sanctuary designations in the Eastern Region by contributing to sanctuary proposal documents, including the draft environmental impact statement, draft sanctuary management plans, and relevant environmental review analyses.
  • Conduct applied research and analysis of maritime archaeological resources and data. Conduct, coordinate, and implement field research on maritime and cultural heritage-based research in ocean and Great Lakes environments.

  • Conduct historical research on sanctuary resources.
  • Work on development of maritime and cultural heritage protection, education, outreach, and research programs. Develop outreach products and policy documents. Represent the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries in professional organizations focused on cultural resource research, preservation, and management.
  • Provide content for communications materials, including the development of new content for web pages, social media, exhibits, publications, and other public facing communication efforts.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
  • Experience writing reports from archaeological surveys and writing content for public engagement.
  • Master’s Degree or PhD in a related field (Marine Resource Management, Archaeology, Communications, Education, History, etc.).

The School of Archaeology is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in Maritime Archaeology Data. The PDRA will gather, curate and standardise archaeological and paleoenvironmental data pertinent to the Mediterranean coast and seascape during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age. This will involve querying existing databases such as CHELSA-Climate TRACE21K and the NOAA Palaeoclimate Application Program Interface (API). Additionally, you will be responsible for structuring new datasets on maritime elements, including wind and currents, categorized by seasons. This post is a fixed-term contract for 3 years. It is a full-time position.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, you will work closely with the project team and incorporate their gathered information relating to the economic and agricultural hinterland of ports and coastal communities into the database. You will be familiar with GIS and develop and implement Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) code to simulate sailing scenarios and the intersection of seasonal movement of marine resources and the agricultural cycle before, during, and after a period of significant climate change. This code should be designed with the FAIR principles in mind to ensure the reusability and sustainability of the project outputs, facilitating future enhancements. You will also produce detailed maps as required for analytical purposes and to illustrate research outputs. You will present papers on behalf of the project at international conferences and workshops organised by the project, as required. You will participate in project fieldwork.

About you

The post holder should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in archaeology, or a related field, together with relevant experience in agent-based analysis in maritime archaeology and / or GIS. You will be proficient in R or Python for data analysis and model development. You will have experience in spatial analysis techniques including spatial networks and map algebra, alongside competent skills in analysing temporal data series. You will also have experience in creating and managing Linked Open Data resources and experience of sourcing, reprocessing, and analysis of spatial and environmental data. You will have the ability to manage your own academic research and contribute ideas for new research projects. You will also have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publications and present research proposals and results.

The Klopp Collection contains artifacts recovered from 42 Wisconsin shipwrecks that took place from 1855-1966. The work will take place at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin with some travel to the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters in Madison.

Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Part-Time Submerged Pre-contact Archaeologist. The Submerged Pre-contact Archaeologist will provide support to cultural resource projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the greater US, as available. The Submerged Pre-contact Project Archaeologist will have knowledge of processing and interpreting marine geophysical data (sub-bottom profiler), core processing, analyze pre-contact and historic artifacts, prepare compliance reports, tribal experience, and have a specialization in paleolandscape reconstruction for the identification of ancient submerged landforms.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the scoping of marine archaeological projects and utilize GIS, site records, and other data sources to identify locations where sites can occur.
  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) documentation pertaining to cultural resources.
  • Provides regulatory compliance support for federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients.
  • Serves as a Field Director and has extensive experience in directing field crews under the guidance of the Principal Investigator including scheduling work and making individual or team work assignments and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods. May have the ability to serve as a Principal Investigator, based on level of experience and project complexity.
  • Supports all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance.
  • Collects information and makes judgments through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.
  • Writes archaeological reports and/or prepares archaeological site forms and makes decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and effects on historic properties in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
  • Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards.
  • Working onboard both small and large vessels offshore in a riverine and/or offshore environment.
  • Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree + 4 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and or education.

Research area and project description:
andidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of marine geophysical data and sediment cores. The call is for two PhD positions.

The successful candidate will be part of a newly established research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to grow our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.

The two PhD candidates will be working closely together and will be an integrated part of the research group. They will focus on establishing a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, describing the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types and linking seismic morphologies to various paleoenvironments. The project also involves possibilities of numerical modeling approaches including machine learning.

The results from the project will provide information on the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. Such information is relevant for future climate mitigation and adaptions, and for a sustainable use of the coastal zones. Additional impact may relate to offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.

The project involves close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The two PhD projects will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.

The research project and the two PhD positions are funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Qualifications and specific competences:

State of SC Underwater Archaeologist
