The place to find employment in underwater, maritime, marine, nautical archaeology and maritime history.
The Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (OEAS) Department at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA, in association with the Centre for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO), seeks to fill a postdoctoral research associate position for investigating different mapping/reconstruction approaches for sea level as measured by a combination of tide gauges and saltmarsh records over the last ~300 years. The position will focus on the integration of ancillary datasets from hydrographic profiles, sea surface temperature, cryospheric and hydrological fingerprints, ocean models and vertical land motion estimates and the development of probabilistic frameworks considering the inherent uncertainties in each of these components. The envisaged project will contribute to the upcoming cycle of the NASA Sea Level Change Team. The ideal candidates have to demonstrate a strong background in sea level research in general and experience in using and analysing ocean model outputs and large observational datasets.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Oceanography, Coastal Engineering, Earth system science, climate studies, or related fields. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
Complete applications, including a cover letter, CV, publication list, a statement of research interests and contact information of 3 references should be submitted via the ODU research foundation webpage (https://hera.odurf.odu.edu/careers/Careers.aspx?req=20-013&type=JOBDESCR) by July 30, 2020 for full consideration. For further information, please contact Sönke Dangendorf (sdangend@odu.edu).

Historian, Anthropologist, the list goes on!
https://www.seek.com.au/job/50124602?type=standout
We are currently recruiting a new team of researchers, funded by an Australian Research Council grant and led by Associate Professor Andrew Woods, to develop software workflows that can be used to recreate significant underwater cultural heritage sites, such as shipwrecks, in immersive underwater virtual heritage experiences.
The team will use photogrammetric 3D reconstruction techniques to generate complex digital 3D models of shipwreck sites from hundreds of thousands of underwater images. This will allow vivid experiences to be created, which explain the stories of shipwrecks, including HMAS Sydney (II) and HMAS AE1.
In collaboration with the Western Australian Museum and the Australian National Maritime Museum, the project will also conduct audience engagement studies to recommend the most appropriate methods to implement underwater virtual heritage experiences for Australian audiences.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the team and assist with the development and testing of software for large-scale photogrammetric 3D reconstruction processing that will run on the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre’s machines. You will be joining a team that has already achieved impressive results working on shipwreck datasets including Kyrenia (300 BC), VOC ship Batavia (1629), Santo Antonio de Tanna (1697), James Matthews (1841), Rouse Simmons (1868), HMAS AE1 (1914), HMAS Sydney (II) (1941) and HSK Kormoran (1941).
More information about the project, and other positions available on this project, is available here: https://research.curtin.edu.au/projects-expertise/3D-shipwrecks/

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Alaska Regional Office, Navigability Section, seeks cost proposals to enter into a contract for the research of historical use of water bodies in Alaska and a work product containing the information outlined in this SOW.
The party providing this service will draft reports[1] summarizing the historical use of selected hydrologic regions in Alaska, depending on the funding available and the cost to provide these summaries of historical use. The hydrologic regions are included in Appendix A. The summaries will be used by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to assist with administrative determinations of navigability. The prioritization of water bodies needing historical use research is dynamic, and the contractor should expect to consult with BLM regarding the priority of a given waterbody before starting on any report.
The deliverable should contain an analysis of the water bodies (and segments) of hydrologic regions that were historically used for travel, focusing on use before and until Alaska statehood (January 3, 1959). It is important to broadly include information for context of use. At a minimum, the report should contain the type of watercraft used, the segment or water body in which the use occurred, notes of use elsewhere in the state if applicable, earliest date of use, latest date of use, notes as needed, a reference to the source used, and a copy of the source. Digital submissions are sufficient.
[1] These reports prepared by the contracted historian will summarize the historical use of the selected water body, but they will not serve as a final navigability determination. BLM reserves that decision.

Archaeologists (Aboriginal, historical, maritime)
Archeologists in Quarantine is a new LIVE streaming show on the Instagram & YouTube channels ‘behind the trowel.’ Created by Past Preservers Expert Presenter, Natasha Billson (@tash_archaeo).
Calling Archaeologists and Anthropologists to ‘sieve-out-the-dirt on their research and experiences’ with Natasha.
Behind the trowel, hopes to branch out into other disciplines such as History, Paleontology, and Geology. So if you are keen to share your field of expertise, drop an email and we will see what we can do.
There is no better time, than now! Most of us are working/studying from home on projects for post-lockdown. When will we have the opportunity to do this again? By having informal chats with archaeologists, Natasha hopes to popularise the profession and to de-stigmatize the discipline, one interview at a time, and says ” since the Time Team era, archaeological programs have struggled to be both educational and entertaining. Let’s change that!”

The University of Stirling, UK, and Historic England announce the opportunity for a fully-funded collaborative doctoral partnership student to undertake a project focusing on the economic valuation of coastal heritage in South West England entitled Entitled “Exploring the value of coastal heritage to different sectors of society using discrete choice experiments”
The project will explore the applicability of economic valuation to coastal heritage and apply discrete choice modelling to value maritime heritage. The research will seek to capture intangible, non-use values of the conservation of coastal heritage sites that go beyond narrow notions of economic value of heritage sites (e.g. tourism revenue or employment effects). The valuation study will explore values for coastal heritage sites held by different user groups (e.g. locals and tourists). While economic valuation is at the heart of this project, the use of focus groups, interviews and surveys within this approach allows for a deeper exploration of the factors that shape people’s relationships with coastal heritage. The project will use state-of-the-art methods to analyse discrete choice experiment (DCE) data to examine the relationships between (economic) values for coastal heritage and concepts such as social and contested values and place identity.
Application deadline: 17th of June 2020

The PhD candidate will investigate late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) and coastal environmental change in southwestern and northern Norway. The trend, rate, magnitude, and coastal impact of recent RSL change will be investigated by integrating new proxy data collected from shallow and marginal marine areas with previously reported tide gauge records. The candidate will also work closely with sea-level modelers in Norway and Canada to improve predictions of RSL change along the Norwegian coast over the next century and beyond. Together with partners at the Geological Survey of Norway, shallow marine areas adjacent to selected coastal sites will be surveyed and sampled. Sedimentary analyses will aim to characterize changes in coastal benthic ecology and biogeochemistry over the last 1–2 millennia. Documented trends will be compared with new RSL data and models to explore the impacts of RSL rise on coastal processes.
