Kent’s unique position, particularly its proximity to both London and Europe, has meant that the county has been of strategic maritime importance since the Romans landed in 55BC. The narrow channel between Dover and Calais offers an opportunity to monitor and control both trade and military activity and so the control of this short stretch of water could provide significant strategic power. One of the strongest influences on the development of Kent’s maritime importance has been England’s ever-changing relationship with France, as our nearest neighbour, as well as with the Low Countries and Europe more generally.

The project will examine Kent’s maritime trade and coastal communities over an important period of English history. The project is particularly interested in examining the ships, shipmasters and merchants who worked out of Kent’s ports, and the commodities they traded in. This will be achieved by undertaking a systematic investigation of the records related to maritime commercial activity over the period 1450-1650.

With a strong record of interdisciplinary research, you will also have familiarity with computer databases and/or digital humanities research methods. A demonstrably high-level of skill in medieval and early modern English palaeography is an essential requirement of the post.

This role will primarily focus on ‘Unpath’d Waters (UNPATH) a major new research project funded by the AHRC’s Towards a National Collection Programme. Led by Historic England, Unpath brings together first class universities, heritage agencies, museums, charitable trusts and maritime heritage experts to work across the UK and the Isle of Man building connections between multiple major maritime collections. It will use Artificial Intelligence to devise new ways of searching across newly linked collections, simulations to help visualise the wrecks and landscapes, and scientific techniques to help identify wrecks and find out more about the artefacts and objects associated with them. UNPATH will deliver integrated management tools to help protect our most significant marine and maritime heritage.

A core element of UNPATH’s research activity, led by the School of Simulation and Visualisation at Glasgow School of Art, focuses on meaningful access to maritime data through novel immersive (VR/AR/XR) interfaces. These will be designed to serve multiple new audiences and these interfaces will be rigorously co-designed with each intended audience. This process will be undertaken in collaboration with a number of UNPATH partners including MOLA and the Universities of Southampton, St Andrews and Bradford. The outcomes of the work will be widely shared to inform, engage and inspire new and existing audiences.

Role:

This position acts as the lead field archaeologist directing a group of divers in underwater archaeological investigations. Fieldwork takes place in varying visibilities. This position has a direct report of the lead Project Manager and collaborates with Project Managers and the Project Archaeologist on fieldwork objectives and processes.

Responsibilities:

The typical responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

The Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Jena, formerly Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, is hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow in Mediterranean Palaeoecology and Pollen Analysis to join the ISLANDLAB research group.

The fulltime position is hosted by the ISLANDLAB group and will be for up to three years and based in Jena, Germany. The candidate will be given an initial 2 years with the possibility of extension of a further 12 months, subject to conditions. The position will require substantial time spent in Malta conducting data collection, anticipated as 6 weeks to 3 months every year. The scope of the role is to conduct and collate all archaeobotanical analyses to identify major changes in the vegetation of the Maltese Islands.

Your Tasks

  • recover a range of samples for analysis from both archaeological sites and sediment cores
  • coordinate and assist in archaeological excavation and terrestrial and marine coring operations
  • oversee relevant processing of own samples and those designated for other specialists, and collate results
  • conduct detailed palynological analyses of samples
  • conduct charcoal counts to reconstruct fire history
  • create taxonomic inventories of vegetation and compare them both over time and with modern areas of natural Mediterranean floral preservation (i.e. sclerophyll ecosystems)
  • calculate metrics for species richness, species evenness, similarity/dissimilarity, tree density, and biomass, allowing quantitative comparison within and between sites, and regions
  • work with other team members in palaeontology, zooarchaeology, archaeobotany, sedimentology, geochemistry, genetics etc. to draw together and interpret results
  • work with key partners and colleagues at the University of Malta and the Deutches Geo-Forschungs-Zentrum in Germany, as well as at the MPI-Geoanthropology
  • attend fieldwork and post-excavation seasons in Malta (minimum of 6 weeks every year, late August to mid-October)
  • participate in any additional research required in Malta, as well as workshops and conferences, and any additional post-excavation work
  • write scientific publications for peer review

Your Profile

The ideal applicant will have a relevant master’s degree and PhD with a background in palynology and palaeoecology of the Mediterranean, and a strong track record of publication in this area evidencing commitment to this field of research. The ability to work with a large interdisciplinary team as a team player is also essential. Prerequisites also include evidence of strong oral and written communication skills as evidence by an outstanding publication and presentation record, commensurate with career stage and care duties. The ability to complete tasks in a timely and structured fashion, be self-driven and work independently, is also required for the position.  It is desirable but not essential to have experience conducting coring work.

The reporting location for this position is Sacramento, Ca. This position will work under general direction of Senior State Archeologist.

The Associate State Archeologist will support district and headquarters staff in the development and implementation of programs and projects that support department-wide implementation of the department’s Sea Level Rise Adaption Strategy. Incumbents perform the more difficult or varied work of archeological investigation and cultural resource management. Key tasks include: programmatic duties and internal coordination; project planning and implementation; and administration and staff support. The position requires intermittent travel throughout the state and occasional irregular work hours.

Desirable Qualifications: Preferred candidate has knowledge of principles and practices of archeological resource management and preservation with added emphasis on Maritime Heritage and/or underwater archeology; and ability to develop innovative resource management programs for the protection, restoration and perpetuation of cultural resources to address sea level rise and climate resiliency.

What You Will Need

  • M.S. degree Marine Science (biology, ecology, chemistry, or geology focus), oceanography, or related discipline, as well as 5 years of work experience outside an-academic setting.
