The wealth of well-preserved submerged archaeological sites of Holocene hunter gatherer-fisher communities in the SW Baltic Sea is an outstanding characteristic of the region. Detailed geophysical surveys of such areas have the potential to reconstruct landscapes on a microregional scale and help to define preferred zones of Stone Age inhabitation and thus optimal zones for archaeological exploration.
The PhD position is within the framework of the European synergy grant project SUBNORDICA funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The project investigates drowned landscapes in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It combines expertise from the Universities of Bradford (UK) and Aarhus (DK), the Museum Moesgaard (DK), the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research (D) and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (D) as well as further European partners.

What We Need
The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Maritime Archaeologist who works with the Foundation and NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) as the primary point of contact for maritime archaeology and history. Specifically, the Maritime Archaeologist will be responsible for assisting with the sanctuary designation process and supporting related cultural resource management activities in the Eastern Region.
In 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration directed the Department of Commerce to move forward with the designation process for five nominated national marine sanctuaries. Who You Are
Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree or PhD in maritime/underwater archaeology or a closely-related field.
Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology.
Archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should include a combination of professional experience in archeological survey (including site documentation methods and remote sensing survey), excavation, laboratory analysis, data processing, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
Strong communication skills both written and oral, to include experience writing technical reports detailing the results of archaeological survey and historical and archival research, and preparing content for public engagement and outreach purposes.

The purpose of this updated guidance document is to describe geophysical surveying techniques that can reveal information about the historic environment as might be encountered on, within and beneath the seabed around England. This draft guidance has been written for commissioners, practitioners and end users of marine geophysical survey data.
There are a wide range of potential users for the guidance, ranging from archaeology students starting their careers, through to highly experienced survey managers and those in the field collecting data. The guidance is intended as useful resource for all end users. As such, it has been designed so that each chapter can be read independently with the pertinent information easily accessible. We would like to seek views from across the sector on this consultation document. The consultation feedback form allows consultees the opportunity to provide feedback on those chapters that they feel are relevant to them.

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), Environmental Compliance Division – Atlantic Section, in either Sterling, VA or Hadley, Massachusetts. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a program lead performing archaeological and historic preservation for the ECD’s Atlantic Region. The incumbent also serves as the Regional Federal Preservation Officer and supports the agency in environmental justice program issues.
At the full performance level (GS-13) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
1. The Regional Archeologist (Marine) is responsible for coordinating BSEE-approved activities, advocating legal requirements, and developing/interpreting/implementing policy regarding archaeology and historic preservation issues.
2. Serves as the archaeological resource management expert, pursuant to P.L. 96-515, acting as consultant, advisor, and technical authority to Department officials, the Deputy Director, Regional Directors, the Atlantic Regional Environmental Officer (REO), and other scientists and engineers in archaeological matters. 4. 5. Title: Drowned Paleolandscapes – a geological record for assessing landscape and environment response to postglacial sea level rise and climate change
Research area and project description: Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of high-resolution marine geophysical data and sediment cores, with possibilities of utilizing numerical modeling approaches and machine learning.
The successful candidate will become part of the RisingSea research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to develop our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.
One of the main objectives of the research group is to establish a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, where the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types are described, and seismic morphologies are linked to various paleoenvironments. The PhD candidate will contribute to this work.
The PhD candidate will use seismo-acoustic data and sediment cores to study the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. The results will be of relevance for future climate mitigation and adaptions, sustainable use of the coastal zones, offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.
The project involves offshore fieldwork opportunities and close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The PhD project will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.
The PhD position is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

The Shoreline Archaeologist will work with the Samish Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) and Samish Natural Resources Department on shoreline cultural resource identification and surveys. The UW School of Marine and Environmental Affairs (SMEA) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Coastal and Environmental Affairs at the level of Assistant Professor. The initial appointment of an Assistant Professor is typically for a period of three years. Renewal for a second three-year term will be considered by the department and school/college/campus spring quarter of the second year. Request for Qualifications to Support NROC’s Submerged Archeological and Cultural Resources Workgroup
At the request of Tribes, states, and federal agency OPC members, NROC recently stood up the Submerged Archaeological and Cultural Resources Workgroup to focus on answering questions in the Northeast related to this topic. The geographic focus of this work is coastal areas and state and federal waters from Maine through Connecticut and potentially including New York. NROC considers the questions and information needs raised by the Workgroup to be a long-term project, and the tasks proposed here will be used to inform the Workgroup’s composition and future projects. Individuals, independent contractors, consulting firms, research institutions, and other non-governmental organizations are welcome to respond to one, several, or all task categories outlined in the RFQ.
Tasks include:
Literature review and synthesis,
Summary of ongoing submerged and coastal archeological and cultural resources work, and
Identifying data and developing submerged archeological and cultural resources data products.
This position is located in the Office of Environmental Compliance, Office of the Associate Administrator for Environment & Compliance, Maritime Administration (MARAD).
This position is established to assist the Director of the Office of Environmental Compliance & senior environmental staff in the planning, coordinating, & implementation of environmental activities of the Maritime Administration. The duties are focused primarily on Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
As an Environmental Protection Specialist (Cultural Resources), you will:
Provide guidance and advice relative to Section 106 of the NHPA, primarily as it relates to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Provide advice and guidance on problems not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods; recommendations and decisions are characterized by breadth and importance.
Conduct Section 106 of the NHPA reviews of proposed Agency actions in accordance with Agency, Department, and ACHP guidelines, regulations, and administrative orders and prepare appropriate documentation. Provide technical assistance to the Director and senior staff in the Office of Environmental Compliance in support of carrying out the Agency’s duties under Section 106 of the NHPA.
Provide consultation, interpretation, and guidance to project sponsors, local officials, and other local, State, and Federal agencies. Coordinate input from SHPOs, Native American tribes, individuals and organizations that are interested in and/or affected by the impact of MARAD programs and projects on cultural resources and historic properties.
Recommend and implement improvements to streamline MARAD’s cultural resources and historic preservation processes to expedite project delivery.
Participate in a broad range of environmental evaluations related to Section 106 of the NHPA and the subsequent development of findings and recommendations to the Maritime Administration, Department of Transportation, federal, state, and local governments, other organizations, and the private sector on environmental issues. Formulate policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines for (1) considering social, economic, and environmental protection factors and compliance with various Federal statutes, regulations, and Executive Orders; (2) developing alternative project concepts and locations; and (3) balancing the consideration of project concepts, costs, transportation needs, and social economic, and environmental factors.
Relate the application of the relevant policies and procedures to the other factors and impacts of transportation projects under consideration.

Responsibilities will include:
· One Curatorial E Archaeologist post within DAERA Marine & Fisheries Division. The post will be dedicated to working on a specialist project looking at desk-based sources pertaining to shipwrecks and utilising legacy multibeam data to map shipwreck extents. The post will provide support to a Senior Marine Archaeologist.
The main duties of the post-holder will include
1. · Desk-based mapping in GIS of historic shipwrecks from legacy multibeam data holdings for the entire coast of N. Ireland for future integration into the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI) and DAERA’s Marine Map Viewer.
2. Identification of shipwrecks which may contain potentially environmentally polluting material utilising desk-based sources.
3. Ensuring that managed tasks are completed within deadline and budget.
4. Liaising with relevant professional colleagues and attending meetings; and
5. Project results dissemination and report writing.
Essential Experience/Qualifications
(i) an honours degree in archaeology, or in a relevant subject such as geography, environmental or marine science.
(ii) GIS experience.

It would be beneficial if candidates can demonstrate 2 years post graduate experience of working with historical sources and GIS. This includes, but is not limited to:

· Database and GIS experience; ability to digitise in GIS.
· Topographic data manipulation and interpretation experience; prior experience using multibeam data beneficial.

As a Research Archeologist, you will perform the following duties:
Conduct applied research and analysis of maritime archaeological resources to support the identification, documentation, and evaluation of marine resources for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS). Execute field research on maritime and cultural heritage-based resources in ocean and great lakes environments. Coordinate research programs within ONMS, including providing technical support regarding survey techniques that use magnetometer/gradiometer, side scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, subbottom profiler, Remotely Operated Vehicles, autonomous systems, or other marine-based systems, along with related data-processing and report preparation.
Coordinate and provide guidance to regions and sites as an advisor and developer of consultation tools, such as findings, Memorandums of Agreement (MOAs), and Programmatic Agreements. Facilitate consultation with State Historic Preservation Offices, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, tribal governments (as related to the NHPA), and other consulting parties. Recommend, design, coordinate and maintain systems for monitoring and tracking maritime and cultural resources for their preservation status and compliance with National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
Participate in the implementation of technical programs in marine archaeology and maritime history to foster public understanding, support, and participation. NROC is seeking one or more Tribal Technical Assistance Specialist(s) to work closely with the Tribal Engagement Coordinator, to provide support to the Tribal Caucus and Tribal members, and to assist Tribes in advancing their ocean and coastal priorities. The Tribal Technical Assistant Specialist(s) will assist Tribes with their technical assistance needs and priorities, including but not limited to:
