Tetra Tech RPS Energy is adding a Marine Archaeologist to our Marine Consenting & Environment team. This role will support on client projects within the offshore wind and other offshore/coastal sectors. We operate a hybrid working arrangement and you can be based in Chepstow, Edinburgh, Woking, Aberdeen or London. We have flexible working opportunities, including part time roles, to ensure a balance of family and working life. We are at the forefront of the industry – delivering offshore infrastructure projects in complex marine environments including offshore wind farm developments. Our experience includes 20 years working across the UK, wider Europe, Americas, Australia and Asia. You’ll become a member of a deeply experienced marine consenting and environment team who have been selected as the lead Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA) consultant for some of the industry’s major “firsts”. Your Role:

  • Ensure reports are written to a high standard and comply with our Information Management System requirements, are properly formatted, checked for grammar and spelling and where applicable, relevant copyright statements etc.
  • Manage data as relevant to marine archaeology and human environment for input to reports/projects
  • Develop an understanding of how marine development impacts marine archaeology and human environment topics and aid in compiling specialist advise for our clients
  • Learn how to understand and author a variety of reports relevant to marine development and EIA
  • Develop an understanding of the client’s requirements on projects, attend client level project meetings and design team meetings and participate in the discussion where appropriate
  • Work closely with our project managers to ensure delivery of your technical specialist area on time and within budget.
  • Continue to develop and promote the work of the marine archaeology team internally and externally.
  • Share client contacts and information with others to allow cross-selling within the team and wider business.

  • You’ll have a good understanding in the areas of EIA, Marine Planning and Marine Archaeology

Prepares archeological sections in environmental documents associated with Program activities; these include National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents (environmental impact statements (EIS) and environmental assessments (EA)), consistency determinations (CD) under the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA), and technical documents. As such, participates in the NEPA scoping and planning process, identifies data gaps or missing information, prepares impact definitions, designs criteria for impact assessment methodologies, and writes sections of the environmental documents.
  5. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of marine archaeology through current literature, attendance at meetings and seminars, and communication with other experts outside the Bureau. Monitors pertinent external programs for applicability of tools that could benefit the Bureau.
  6. Identifies problems and data gaps which may be addressed as operational projects and research studies through the government procurement process. As such, develops study protocols to resolve these problems, recommends studies for funding approval, and accepts responsibility for the entire procurement cycle. As appropriate, serves as a Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), Project Officer (PO), or Contract Inspector (CI).

Title:
Drowned Paleolandscapes – a geological record for assessing landscape and environment response to postglacial sea level rise and climate change

Research area and project description:
Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD fellowship focused on submerged paleolandscape analysis primarily by means of high-resolution marine geophysical data and sediment cores, with possibilities of utilizing numerical modeling approaches and machine learning. 

The successful candidate will become part of the RisingSea research group working to assess and quantify the preservation degree of drowned paleolandscapes and the response of low-topography landscapes and environments to rising sea level. More broadly, the project aims to utilize the geological archives of the eastern North Sea Basin to develop our basic understanding and reference framework for how low-topography landscapes and environments respond to rising sea level and climate change over longer time scales.

One of the main objectives of the research group is to establish a Drowned Paleolandscape Atlas, where the geophysical characteristics of specific preserved landscape types are described, and seismic morphologies are linked to various paleoenvironments. The PhD candidate will contribute to this work.

The PhD candidate will use seismo-acoustic data and sediment cores to study the geological processes that are prevalent during flooding and sea-level rise. The results will be of relevance for future climate mitigation and adaptions, sustainable use of the coastal zones, offshore windfarm constructions and geo-archaeology.

The project involves offshore fieldwork opportunities and close collaboration with research and industry partners both nationally and internationally; – including universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. The PhD project will preferably include a research visit to one of the collaborating institutions.

The PhD position is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

At the request of Tribes, states, and federal agency OPC members, NROC recently stood up the Submerged Archaeological and Cultural Resources Workgroup to focus on answering questions in the Northeast related to this topic. The geographic focus of this work is coastal areas and state and federal waters from Maine through Connecticut and potentially including New York. NROC considers the questions and information needs raised by the Workgroup to be a long-term project, and the tasks proposed here will be used to inform the Workgroup’s composition and future projects. Individuals, independent contractors, consulting firms, research institutions, and other non-governmental organizations are welcome to respond to one, several, or all task categories outlined in the RFQ.

Tasks include:

  • Literature review and synthesis,
  • Summary of ongoing submerged and coastal archeological and cultural resources work, and

  • Recommend and implement improvements to streamline MARAD’s cultural resources and historic preservation processes to expedite project delivery.
  • Participate in a broad range of environmental evaluations related to Section 106 of the NHPA and the subsequent development of findings and recommendations to the Maritime Administration, Department of Transportation, federal, state, and local governments, other organizations, and the private sector on environmental issues.  Formulate policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines for (1) considering social, economic, and environmental protection factors and compliance with various Federal statutes, regulations, and Executive Orders; (2) developing alternative project concepts and locations; and (3) balancing the consideration of project concepts, costs, transportation needs, and social economic, and environmental factors.
  • Relate the application of the relevant policies and procedures to the other factors and impacts of transportation projects under consideration.

The post will provide support to a Senior Marine Archaeologist. 

The main duties of the post-holder will include

1.      ·   Desk-based mapping in GIS of historic shipwrecks from legacy multibeam data holdings for the entire coast of N. Ireland for future integration into the Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI) and DAERA’s Marine Map Viewer.

2.     Identification of shipwrecks which may contain potentially environmentally polluting material utilising desk-based sources.

3.     Ensuring that managed tasks are completed within deadline and budget.

4.     Liaising with relevant professional colleagues and attending meetings; and

5.     Project results dissemination and report writing.

Essential Experience/Qualifications

(i) an honours degree in archaeology, or in a relevant subject such as geography, environmental or marine science.

It would be beneficial if candidates can demonstrate 2 years post graduate experience of working with historical sources and GIS. This includes, but is not limited to:

·      Database and GIS experience; ability to digitise in GIS.

Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap Project Coordinator

As directed by House Bill 4080 (HB 4080) in the 2024 legislative session, DLCD is responsible for working with the Governor’s office, representatives of tribal nations, other agencies, local governments, and interested parties on the completion of a Roadmap. 

A Roadmap is an opportunity for a diversity of interests in Oregon to establish a more transparent, equitable, and community-driven process for planning, siting, developing, and operating floating offshore wind energy projects and their associated infrastructure. The Roadmap Project Coordination will be responsible for leading the state to conduct an open, transparent, proactive, and comprehensive dialogue around floating offshore wind energy that represents all of Oregon’s interests in state, tribal, regional, and federal planning and decision making resulting in a Roadmap. Help bring the Newport Medieval Ship back to life to through an animation based on archaeological research into its origins and construction

What is the Newport Medieval Ship

The Newport Medieval Ship is a fifteenth century merchant vessel unearthed in the heart of Newport, South Wales in 2002.

The ship was a formidable three-masted craft measuring over 30 metres in length and capable of carrying around 200 tons of cargo. 

It was brought to Newport for repairs or refit in 1468 or 1469. It is thought that, whilst in Newport, the cradle supporting the ship collapsed. The hull was flooded and the majority of the ship was then taken apart, leaving only the lower hull that we have today.  

These remains have been carefully cleaned, recorded and conserved: conservation of the timbers concluded earlier this year. The project is now focused on planning the reassembly and display of the hull and artefacts.

Visitors can learn more about the history of the ship at the Newport Ship visitor centre.

The Friends of Newport Ship support the work of Newport City Council in the continuing conservation of the timbers and all the other artefacts that are part of this amazing treasure – ‘the Newport Medieval Ship’.

2024 Crowdfunder

In 2023, researchers from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Swansea University announced a breakthrough in the dating of the Newport Medieval Ship. Through the use of oxygen isotope dendrochronology (the study of tree-ring data), they have determined that selected structural timbers of the hull were made from oak trees that were felled in the winter of 1457-58.  

The research, published in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, suggests that the vessel was constructed soon after this and had a working life of about ten years before coming to Newport for repairs.

Previous research has shown that the ship timbers originated from forests in the Basque Country in northern Spain and that the ship was likely built along the Basque coast.

Analysis of the artefacts, cargo remnants and plant remains from the ship have revealed trading links with Portugal.

This crowdfunder will create a new animation which will be displayed in the visitor centre and used as part of the education and engagement activities by the Friends of Newport Ship and Newport Museums and Heritage Service. It will compliment a animation created about the final journey which was created by Dextra Visual in 2022.

The animation will be based on the archaeological research about the origins of the Newport Ship including the 2023 research about ships’ timbers and construction. We are raising funds so the animation is completed in time for the 2024 Friends of Newport Ship AGM.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Archaeological Fellow will be part of a team offering dedicated archaeological services in Singapore, to conduct archaeology investigations in Singapore, process and research on archaeological material culture, and disseminate archaeological research.

Senior Archaeologist (Maritime Archaeology)

Responsibilities

– Lead research and conduct of maritime archaeology investigations, including excavations, surveys, watching briefs and documentation

– Provide specialist and technical advice on maritime archaeology issues

– Research on maritime archaeology in Singapore and the region, and disseminate reports on archaeological research

– Oversee post-excavation processing and management of excavated archaeology materials

– Work closely with relevant stakeholders on archaeological issues, which may include

Planning authorities – advise on archaeological technicalities and/or on conduct of research/surveys

~ Museums and Heritage Institutions – input on research, conservation, display and interpretation of

archaeology materials

~ Universities and Research Centres – input on research and education of archaeology

– Assist Head (Archaeology) in managing projects and budgets

– Manage procurement matters and records management for archaeology at the CLG

Requirements

– A Master’s (PhD preferred) degree in maritime archaeology, nautical science or relevant field

– Knowledge in Singapore archaeology and history;

– Ability and willingness to work on site under outdoor conditions

– Computer literacy (MS Office, etc., databases, knowledge of graphic programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Auto Cad, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc. will be advantageous);

– At least ten years of work experience in archaeology or related field

– Excellent oral and written English, and basic knowledge in general science and math skills;

– Strong organisational, project management, and inter-personal skills, able to work independently and as part of a team

National £31,912 – £34,500

As a Marine Historic Environment Record (HER) Manager, you will develop and manage information services based on the National Marine Heritage Record (NMHR). You will ensure that Historic England (HE) colleagues and external partners and stakeholders not only have access to the information needed to support marine planning casework, designation and management of the marine historic environment but can also make requests for information of value to them.

You will be responsible for:

  • promoting the Marine HER as a service for public and commercial use to support research and the preparation of policies and proposals for the management of sustainable change in the marine historic environment
  • ensuring that the NMHR is current and consistent to enable access to and dissemination of data to internal and external users
  • maintaining oversight of the coverage of the NMHR, prioritising enhancement projects to better meet customer needs and seeking funding with which to address gaps
  • advising on the appropriate analysis and interpretation of data relating to the marine historic environment
  • managing a specialist information service for internal and external users of the NMHR, including agreeing appropriate service levels and charges.

A key aspect of the role is its strong emphasis on collaborative working across HE departments, particularly with Listing, Policy and Marine Planning colleagues. You will also play an active role in the HER community, liaising and collaborating as appropriate with partners operating local HERs with marine data components.

The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home – Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth and Cambridge. 

What you will be doing

To ensure, insofar as practicable, the maintenance of the NMHR so that HE, its partners and members of the public have access to accurate and reliable information about the marine historic environment.

To develop and promote the Marine HER as a service for public and business use to support research and the preparation of policies and proposals for the management of sustainable change in the marine historic environment.

To manage and develop staff and volunteers responsible for maintaining and enhancing the NMHR.

To act as the Information Asset owner for the NMHR (and other HE spatial marine datasets held in GIS), taking responsibility for compliance with regulations and acting as a point of contact for these assets.

To act as system owner for Mariner and product owner for any systems development, working closely with the IMT Development Team and the Digital Team.

To prioritise and project manage enhancement of the NMHR, including commissioning research and acting as a Project Assurance Officer where required. 

To work with the Data Standards Specialists to ensure the record conforms to agreed standards and develop any new data standards and controlled terminology used in the NMHR.

To ensure the provision of a specialist customer inquiry service in relation to the NMHR, including working with Archive Services for external customers, with the Information Services team over designated sites and with IMT and Digital teams for online dissemination.

To contribute specialist advice as required to marine colleagues, particularly in Listing, Marine Planning and Marine Archaeology, on the appropriate analysis and interpretation of data relating to the marine historic environment information in the NMHR.

To represent HE externally to promote the Marine HER and the work of the team.

To undertake horizon scanning in relation to IT development, regulatory changes and external research to identify threats to and opportunities for the NMHR and the Marine HER.

As a manager, to ensure our legal obligations and the expectations set out in our policies are met, including health & safety, equality & diversity, finance, procurement, information security and managing people.

To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.
