The University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL) seeks a historian to serve as its Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellow.  The position is funded for two years and requires residency at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

The DPAA Research Partner Fellow at UNL will leverage the University’s assets to serve the Agency by conducting historical research and analysis related to U.S. personnel losses in the twentieth century.  Under supervision and guidance from Agency staff, the UNL Fellow’s primary work responsibilities will include conducting oral history interviews for an internal archive, in addition to overseeing a large-scale digital humanities project and other research projects as assigned by DPAA.

The Fellow is expected to maintain a presence on campus. While teaching is not required, the Fellow will be permitted to teach one course per calendar year and will be encouraged to manage an internship program, mentor students, and encourage student learning through engagement with their DPAA projects. UNL seeks a person who, in concert with DPAA, actively engages with the UNL community and other local communities to raise awareness about issues related to the identification of unaccounted-for remains of American service personnel from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle Eastern wars.

Strong writing, data collection, and analysis skills, along with an ability to collaborate with others, are required for this position.  Experience conducting oral histories and with digital history is preferred. This position requires a time commitment of 40 hours per week on DPAA related work and outreach activities.

Stipendiary Research Fellowship

Through a generous donation, King’s College Cambridge is able to invite applications for a four-year Research Fellowship from those who are completing or have recently completed a doctorate and who intend to pursue a research project on some aspect of the Silk Road countries, societies, and cultures of Asia from the Western borders of China to the Mediterranean Sea, as well as their relationships with China in the East and Europe in the West. The research project’s discipline may address, amongst other issues, Environmental History, Religion, Art, Maritime History, China before 1911, Ottoman Empire, and Russian Central Asia, but applicants should not feel constrained by this list.

This Research Fellowship is part of a broader programme of studies of the countries of the Silk Roads, which includes lectures, seminars and conferences, as well as graduate scholarships and further Research Fellowships. As well as pursuing their own research project, the successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in developing the programme and in organizing academic activity concerned with the countries of the Silk Road.

Join our Research team as a geologist or geophysicist for the FWO SBO project ‘TESTEREP’ (TEsterep REconstructed for Policy making and Public engagement), which aims to reconstruct and map the evolution of part of the Flemish Seascape since c. 5000 BP.

You will perform research on the offshore paleo-geomorphological change off the Flemish coastline, in an area where once a peninsula (Testerep) was located. Within the larger project, offshore geophysical and sedimentological data will be combined with other intertidal and terrestrial geological and archaeological data to extend our spatio-temporal understanding of the evolution and demise of this former Testerep peninsula. Results of these data will be communicated to various stakeholders, including the wider public.

Researcher nearshore palaeolandscape exploration

In recent years, there has been a rapidly growing interest in the study of drowned landscapes and maritime geo-archaeology. This challenging research field integrates the study of climate and sea-level change, paleogeography, marine geology, oceanography and archaeology to study human presence and landscapes that were once located on dry land, but are now preserved in the intertidal or marine environment. VLIZ is one of the pioneers in Belgium of this challenging interdisciplinary research field, exploring the submerged landscapes of the North Sea.

The FWO SBO project TESTEREP is a 4-year scientific research project, led by the Free University of Brussels (VUB), in close collaboration with the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), KU Leuven and HoWest. This consortium brings together archaeologists, marine geoscientists, hydraulic engineers and virtual reality specialists. They will study the evolution and eventual demise of the Testerep peninsula over the past 5000 years from an archaeological, geological and hydrodynamical viewpoint. The resulting reconstructions and models will be used to raise public awareness on coastal dynamics and current threats, to stimulate blue tourism, to support heritage management, and to inspire sustainable coastal management strategies for the future. As such, the project will have a large stakeholder engagement and outreach component to it.

The main task of VLIZ in the TESTEREP project concerns the collation and analysis of existing offshore data, the collection and analysis of new geophysical and sedimentological offshore data, assisting in the development of a GIS database and providing the necessary seabed parameters for input in morphological/hydrodynamic models which will test hypothesis of the past evolution of the coastal landscape. Input will also be provided for the envisaged visualization outputs aimed at public engagement. VLIZ will also take a leading role in the stakeholder interaction and outreach component.  A close collaboration with the other project partners will be essential to the success of the project.

• Perform analysis and evaluation of imagery collected from side scan sonar, bathometric, video, and still photography cameras. 
• Use proprietary software including GIS-based systems in a network of workstations and personal computers (Windows) to perform basic imaging enhancement, display, and analytical functions to obtain, organize, and present information relevant to the exploitation of remotely sensed and imaged data obtained from deep ocean systems.
• Review mission related data logs, worksheets, and reports to determine focal points for the analysis as well as discovery of deficiencies and discrepancies in the performance of data collection equipment and systems.
• Preparation of formal written technical reports as well as oral briefs to report analysis findings and conclusions to the customer.
• Some travel is required.
• Schedule can be demanding throughout the year and work outside normal working hours from time to time should be anticipated.
• Will be required to participate in at sea exercises or data collection missions of various durations. Durations normally are between 15 and 30 days, but can be as much as 120 days.  Normal annual requirement is 45-60 days.

            REQUIRED

• Associate’s Degree in a technical or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

• Background in GIS products (ESRI) and Side Look Sonars (SLS) processing.
• Experience with Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), & Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and their support equipment.

Context of Job:

The University of Delaware (UD) School of Marine Science and Policy invites applications specializing in remotely sensed underwater spatial data analysis for a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellowship. The Fellow will conduct research projects that assist the DPAA mission to provide the fullest possible accounting for the nation’s missing personnel from past conflicts.

The DPAA will provide project oversight, policies, procedures, and templates for all research projects. The priorities of these projects will be determined by the DPAA. Regular updates will be provided back to the DPAA, with occasional updates to other relevant parties.

The Fellow’s projects will include, but not be limited to, post-mission data processing and large-scale GIS projects. This will involve analyzing archival and previously collected field data (side scan sonar, multibeam, camera, magnetometer, and other sources) from Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), as well as towed and vessel-mounted instruments, using processing software and other GIS applications to identify possible MIA-associated aircraft wreckage and other targets.

Major Responsibilities:

The Fellow will identify, analyze and process information on MIA-associated sites via multiple sources (examples follow).
• Leads and data sources identified by DPAA and assigned to the Postdoc for further development.
• Leads and data sources cultivated by the Fellow through personal, professional, and institutional networks of historians, curators, genealogists, veterans organizations, and surviving family members. These efforts will be facilitated by other researchers at UD and partner organizations.
• Leads and data sources identified by other researchers contributing to the larger project.
• Internal data sources previously collected by UD.

The Fellow will catalog and store all data and other material collected, or produced, by the partnership on an institution-owed computer, backed up with a secure cloud-based account, or hard drive. The Fellow will follow DPAA guidance on naming conventions, database fields, and best practices in order to ensure that research procedures and protocols conform to those used by the DPAA, and the Department of Defense (DOD) generally.

The Fellow will report directly to the DPAA under the supervision of Dr. Mark Moline, who will serve as the project liaison to both the University and DPAA. The Fellow will not have any mandatory teaching or grading responsibilities but will be encouraged to teach one course per year related to job responsibilities. The Fellow will engage with external entities and outreach activities as approved by the DPAA.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in underwater archelogy, geography, history, oceanography, or a closely related field, with demonstrated strengths in analysis of sonar data, geographic information systems, and/or database management.

Experience with ArcGIS required. Experience with Sonarwiz, Hypack, and ArcGIS Python scripting preferred.

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh, as part of an GCRF/AHRC-funded research project, Rising from the Depths Network: utilising marine cultural heritage in East Africa to help develop sustainable social, economic and cultural benefits, is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant for the final dissemination year (Aug 2021 – Jun 2022) of a four year research project.

The Rising from the Depths Network is currently funding 29 projects across in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar looking at the ways in which marine cultural heritage can be harnessed to bring direct benefits to local communities. The project has established a trans-boundary and cross-sector network of arts and humanities-led researchers, government officers, scientists, policy makers, UN officials, NGOs, ICT professionals and specialists working in heritage, infrastructure and the offshore industry, to identify new opportunities and methodologies for protecting and utilising the marine cultural heritage of East Africa to stimulate alternative sources of income, foster local identities, and enhance the value and impact of overseas aid in the marine sector. The University of Edinburgh is leading the network and the final year is about dissemination and making the results of the network as accessible as possible. The Rising from the Depths network is concerned with highlighting the potential of coastal and marine heritage to inform sustainable development approaches and improve the lives of local communities. As our approach is multidisciplinary, we are interested in hearing from researchers with a PhD in any related discipline including archaeology, anthropology, development studies, history, environmental sciences, digital humanities, media, law and coastal management. Experience of working on projects in East Africa and/or of development related work would be an advantage. The PDRA will assist the research team in the monitoring and evaluation of the projects it is funding in East Africa. The PDRA will have specific responsibility for bringing the tools and methodologies used in the funded project together to create a coherent set of policy statements on how engagement with marine cultural heritage can enhance sustainable marine development strategies. These statements will ensure the lessons learned and successful approaches created by the network can be utilised by a range of marine stakeholders from heritage professionals and national governments to local communities and industry. This will involve working with research teams in the region to help identify and create links between the projects completed and funded to date. The candidate will also assist in running dissemination events and creating online content for the Rising from the Depths website. The mission of the Florida Public Archaeology Network is to promote and facilitate the stewardship, public appreciation, and value of Florida’s archaeological heritage through regional centers, partnerships, and community engagement. FPAN approaches our mission by work in three core areas: Public Outreach, Assistance to Local Governments, and Assistance to the Florida Division of Historical Resources. FPAN operates visible public outreach programs, including promotion of archaeological/heritage tourism; partnerships with Florida Anthropological Society chapters and other regional heritage organizations; dissemination of archaeological information to the public; promotion of existing regional heritage events and programs; and promotion of archaeological volunteer opportunities.
