DIRECTOR OF INTERPRETATION
Mystic, CT The Interpretation department is responsible for programs and activities that inspire an enduring connection between museum visitors and the stories, artifacts and skills of the historic and contemporary American maritime experience. The Director is responsible for daily interpretation of the 17-acre site including the restoration shipyard, 19th century village, and formal exhibit galleries; daily special programs including family activities and maritime skills demonstrations; and special activities and programs during the museum’s weekend and holiday events. This position will play a key role in supporting the Museum’s commitment to creating visitor-centered experiences that transform the ways our audiences connect with our collections, the work of our staff and the stories of the sea. The department includes paid staff who work in the trades, demonstration and family areas and volunteers who facilitate the experience in the formal exhibit galleries as well as assist in all Museum departments. The Director of Interpretation leads the planning and execution of strategies to increase Mystic Seaport Museum’s leadership role in experiential and interdisciplinary museum and maritime education, and continuing high standards in authenticity and innovation while increasing the representation of diverse voices and stories in the museum interpretation. Additionally, the Director is expected to represent the museum in the media and public forums. The successful candidate must be comfortable being interviewed by electronic media, be able to emcee virtual and public events, and have sufficient camera presence to host video programming. The Director will work with Museum leadership with a focus on engagement to develop and advance relationships with more diverse audiences.
