  • The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus:
  • 1. At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management;
    2. At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology, and
    3. Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
    In addition to these minimum qualifications, a professional in prehistoric archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the prehistoric period. A professional in historic archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the historic period.

Required Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of relevant professional work experience in marine, land, and aerial geophysical systems

  • 3+ years of experience with analysis and technical report writing 
  • Working knowledge and understanding of operations and maintenance of geophysical, marine and land equipment. 
  • Experience troubleshooting and repair of electronic and software programming. 
  • Experience in cable splicing and soldering, use of diagnostic equipment, and communications systems. 
  • Experience with boat handling and working on larger vessels 
  • Experience with geophysical systems (including chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometer)

  • Proficiency in the use of QGIS, ArcGis, or Surfer software.

  • Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems. 
  • May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Primary Purpose of Position:
The QAR Conservator undertakes all aspects of the documentation, examination, conservation, analysis, and study of archaeological artifacts from time of recovery at an underwater site until official transfer of the objects to the North Carolina Maritime Museum.  The primary focus of this position will be on post-recovery conservation.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Artifact Conservation: Examination, analysis, treatment, recording and documentation of artifacts, of various classes, and materials (including metals, organics, and inorganic materials), through all stages of conservation using established professional and approved methods. Conservation undertaken may include, as appropriate for material and condition of artifact, wet storage, x-radiography, concretion break down, desalination (immersion, electrolytic reduction), solution monitoring, materials identification, stabilization, consolidation, repair and restoration.   • Field Work (Conservation): On site conservation – contribute to the recording, documentation and conservation of finds during field planning, recovery, and post-recovery processing – insuring proper inventory, field storage, and transportation of artifacts between site and storage and conservation facility. Participate in and contribute expertise to conservation of artifacts at site. Following completion of fieldwork at the site time for field work function will be transferred to Artifact Conservation function.
  • Public Education and Outreach: Participate in public outreach activities such as laboratory tours, public presentations, media interviews, show and tell events at other venues. Prepare articles and papers for publication and professional conferences. Supervise and train temporary employees, interns and volunteers.

2. Ensures that archaeological concerns are addressed in the formation of National and Regional policy that leads to the development of regulations, implementation guidelines, and procedures for the program.

5. Oversees, schedules, and conducts field inspections and surveys regarding historic preservation compliance monitoring and damage assessments working with remote-sensing data collection; mitigation, stipulation, and NTL enforcement; and coordinating with industry contacts, BOEM, and other federal and state counterparts to ensure compliance with NHPA and NEPA.
6. Briefs and defends BSEE technical programs, policies, and conclusions to other Federal, State, and local governments, industry leads, and private groups/persons as the technical authority on national historic preservation.
7. Assists in the development, progress, and reassessment of the strategic plan implementation approach for environmental justice. This includes supporting their goal lead with defining success criteria, tracking milestones, and metrics; and fostering connections across the bureau to ensure effective execution of environmental justice issues on the strategic plan.

Who You Are 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, including but not limited to economics, sociology, survey research, and anthropology.
  • Proven experience with database management and statistical analysis using a statistical program like SAS, STATA, R, or other comparable software.
  • Competency with using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); Intermediate/advanced skills in Excel.
  • Strong data analytic skills with a foundation in statistics.

Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap Project Coordinator

The primary purpose of the position is to lead the development and implementation of an Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap for the state through a comprehensive engagement process. This position will act as the lead for the department on offshore wind energy policies, procedures, and review of proposed projects. Floating offshore wind energy, globally, is an emerging industry and a potential additional source of clean energy. There is substantial wind energy development potential in state and federal waters off the coast of Oregon. There are equally important aspects of Oregon’s oceans, ecosystems, and coastal communities that could be impacted, positively or negatively, by offshore wind energy development including the environment, fishing, Tribal cultural resources, and coastal economies. As directed by House Bill 4080 (HB 4080) in the 2024 legislative session, DLCD is responsible for working with the Governor’s office, representatives of tribal nations, other agencies, local governments, and interested parties on the completion of a Roadmap. 

A Roadmap is an opportunity for a diversity of interests in Oregon to establish a more transparent, equitable, and community-driven process for planning, siting, developing, and operating floating offshore wind energy projects and their associated infrastructure. The Roadmap Project Coordination will be responsible for leading the state to conduct an open, transparent, proactive, and comprehensive dialogue around floating offshore wind energy that represents all of Oregon’s interests in state, tribal, regional, and federal planning and decision making resulting in a Roadmap. This position will lead the implementation elements of the Roadmap that DLCD is tasked to complete including possible amendments to the Territorial Sea Plan part 5.

We are seeking to employ a Senior Geoarchaeologist to play a lead role in developing and leading our consultancy work in geoarchaeology, palaeoenvironments and deposit modelling. To meet our growing workload and specialist requirements we are looking for an experienced geoarchaeologist to develop our capabilities to undertake geoarchaeological assessment, produce geoarchaeological project designs and written schemes of investigation, manage/undertaken geoarchaeological monitoring and recording, and create deposit models.

Job Summary 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) conducts research, monitoring, education, and outreach activities with the goals of protecting the Great Lakes and their rich history. Qualified personnel are required to safely and efficiently conduct marine research and provide program support through fieldwork and public engagement.

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) provides support to TBNMS and is seeking applicants with experience in marine research operations and management. 

The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise working with maritime heritage resources and conducting other marine science and resource protection operations, including strong experience as a certified scientific diver. 

This position includes the following activities: 

· Conduct historical, archaeological, and Great Lakes research.

· Coordinate the diving unit, including administration, planning, and operations.

· Maintain dive equipment.

· Support resource protection operations (mooring buoys). 

· Assist with remote sensing surveys and processing.

· Support sanctuary education, outreach, and interpretation programs.

Requirements

Education: Degree (Masters or Bachelors) from an accredited college or university in a relevant field such as Coastal Resource Management, Biology, Geology, Oceanography, Environmental Studies, Maritime Archaeology, Maritime History, Engineering, or other related scientific fields. 

Diving 

· Experience engaging in scientific diving operations; certification to the level of Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver (or equivalent) from a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) and meeting the eligibility requirements to enroll in NOAA Diver training as outlined in the NOAA Diving Standards and Safety Manual.

· Certification to the level of Divemaster or Instructor in a nationally recognized SCUBA training agency (NAUI, PADI, SDI/TDI, etc.) along with prior completion of a scientific diver training course such as one offered at American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).

· Experience supporting a scientific diving unit including administration, planning, and operations. 

· Experience with dive equipment maintenance. 

· Experience with technical diving including utilization of closed-circuit rebreathers. 

Research and On-water Operations

· Experience conducting historical and archaeological research, including scientific diving.

· Experience conducting marine science.

· Experience with underwater photography, videography, and/or photogrammetry is preferred. 

· Experience organizing and planning research projects.

· Experience working aboard and/or operating small research vessels.

· Experience maintaining field research equipment, especially dive equipment.

Who is the Maritime Archaeological Society?

Founded in 2015, we are a non-profit, citizen-scientist, volunteer organization dedicated to using professional archaeology to search for historic wrecks in the Pacific Northwest.

What are you searching for?

Our targets include the wreck of a Spanish galleon known as the “Beeswax Shipwreck“, historic steamers, and sailing vessels along the Oregon and Washington coasts and the Puget Sound. There is also a rich history of Native American canoes swallowed by mud banks along our rivers. With interest from the indigenous communities that owned them, these vessels could become prime targets for discovery and repatriation.

What is a Side-Scan Sonar?

This device, towed behind our search boat, will create a picture of the search area. It’s the best way to find debris fields leading us to the wreck sites!
