Position Summary:

OceanX is seeking a Science Program Officer to drive scientific missions aboard the research vessel, OceanXplorer. Reporting directly to the OceanX co-CEO on all science-related matters, this role will play a central part in shaping and managing the science program. The Science Program Officer will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team spanning science, media, education, and marine operations, while serving as a key liaison with the global scientific and ocean exploration communities.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with external research organizations to identify, evaluate, and develop missions that are both scientifically significant and aligned with OceanX’s broader mission. With the support of team members, the Science Program Officer will contribute across the full mission lifecycle- from ideation and proposal review to planning, execution, and post-mission evaluation – ensuring that each expedition delivers meaningful scientific impact and storytelling value.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as expedition coordinator onboard the vessel, overseeing all elements of scientific missions
  • Act as Head of Scientific Operations while onboard, ensuring scientific missions are effectively executed
  • Lead outreach to the scientific and ocean exploration communities to build strategic alliances and partnerships in alignment with OceanX Partnerships
  • Evaluate and recommend science mission proposals in collaboration with Digital Programs, Partnerships, and Education teams
  • Manage communications on scientific programs and mission outputs with internal Digital Programs/Marketing & Communication teams and external partners (pre-mission, on-mission, and post-mission reporting)
  • Oversee planning and logistics to ensure timely delivery of mission enablers (e.g., permitting, scientific equipment, and supplies)
  • Direct onboard science and technical teams to ensure missions have the necessary resources and capabilities for success
  • Develop and maintain budgets for science operations and projects
  • Oversee Science team resources, including contractors, consultants, and onshore/offshore personnel
  • Willingness to spend extended periods at sea, with travel comprising up to 35% of the year
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings or late evenings, to support cross-time zone collaboration
  • Adaptable to varying workloads, balancing periods of focused execution with lighter operational phases

Qualifications: 

  • Professional Experience:​
    • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related scientific field
    • 7+ years of experience in a comparable organization or domain (e.g., marine research, exploration, conservation, or science operations)
    • Proven experience coordinating or managing offshore missions, field-based research, or marine operations, with a strong professional network in the ocean science or exploration community
    • Background in marine science, oceanography, or related fieldwork; direct experience with oceanographic expeditions strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated success planning and executing complex, multi-stakeholder projects in dynamic and fast-paced environments
  • Personal Attributes:

Required Qualifications

Have knowledge in collecting, analyzing, and processing hydrographic survey data. Experience with SIS, Eiva NaviSuite, Hypack, Qinsy, Caris, and/or equivalent collection/processing software desired.

Be knowledgeable in interfacing and operating hydrographic survey equipment, i.e. GNSS, inertial navigation, multibeam, sub-bottom profilers, and sidescan sonar systems.

Experience with system interfacing, networking, and troubleshooting.

Our Capital Project Delivery team includes an integrated marine geophysical and geotechnical team offering specialist services to clients across a range of sectors including marine aggregates, offshore wind, wave and tidal energy,  subsea cables, coastal/marine engineering, and ports/harbours developments.

Our Capital Project Delivery team are driving the development of ERM’s Marine Centre of Excellence; a world-leading hub of marine environmental and planning consultancy services for a wide range of clients across numerous seabed user sectors and marine projects, including offshore wind. 

The role will comprise analysing and reporting on hydrographic and marine geophysical data, such as bathymetry, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, and shallow seismic data for various purposes including engineering, habitat assessments, EIAs, and archaeology.  The successful candidate will also have an understanding of the marine hydrodynamic environment and sediment transport processes, including hydrodynamic models, and know how to incorporate these into interpretations. The resulting reports guide our existing clients on infrastructure design and installation, impact assessments, asset management, decommissioning, and licensing considerations.

As the role will also involve providing support for offshore survey design, technical specification, procurement, management, and data quality control; offshore survey experience is essential.

About you

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant marine geoscience or geophysics or oceanography  subject
  • Experience with ESRI Arc Map/ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, and specialist geoscience software programs, such as IHS Kingdom, SonarWiz or Moga Seaview
  • Strong understanding of offshore geophysical acquisition equipment and techniques
  • Experienced in interpreting hydrographic and geophysical data, including sub-bottom profiler
  • Strong understanding of the marine hydrodynamic environment and sediment transport processes
  • Skilled in technical and non-technical writing, and verbal communication
  • Keen to learn and develop current skills within a diverse team of subject matter experts within an international company
  • Offshore survey experience is essential
  • Experience in writing chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments is desired

Dear Colleagues,

In light of changing climate and geopolitical priorities, the preservation of submerged cultural heritage remains in limbo as coastal sites are threatened by storms and construction, and deep-water sites are threatened by salvors, corrosion, and even tourists. Efforts to protect shipwrecks and other maritime cultural heritage sites require tools and technology to access them, often in deep water, and funds and resources to conduct this work, as we cannot protect what has never been found. Wrecks have also been found to pose their own unique environmental threats in the form of oil pollution and chemical munitions. In addition to increased ocean exploration to locate wrecks, advances in 3D documentation provide a means of digitally preserving heritage sites and sharing these hard to access places with the public. Ashore historic ships, and the raised and preserved wrecks of ancient and historic craft also face significant challenges and some have been lost. The articles in this special issue on maritime heritage should address any number of methods and case studies involving the preservation, documentation or exploration of shipwreck sites, shipwrecks displayed in museums, and historic ships afloat and ashore.

The Conference is organised under the aegis of the UNESCO Chair of Aix-Marseille University in Coastal and Maritime Archaeology, led by AMU and the Department of Underwater Archaeological Research of the French Ministry of Culture (DRASSM), and the UNESCO-UNITWIN network for underwater archaeology, that AMU is currently coordinating.

The Conference is organised in collaboration with three major EU projects, that are currently leading innovation in the field of sustainable natural and cultural tourism in Europe and the Outermost Regions; the Horizon Europe project TOURAL and EMFAF project ecoRoute, as well as EMFAF project uBlueTec, aiming at upskilling and reskilling the new blue EU generation to face challenges of the blue economy, such as impacts of climate change, cultural and natural ecosystem preservation and valorisation, and our common efforts towards carbon neutrality.

The event will also be an occasion for an extraordinary meeting of the members of the UNESCO UNITWIN network for Underwater Archaeology.

The event will centre around critical themes in the management, preservation, and promotion of coastal and underwater cultural heritage through public accessibility and green tourist initiatives, and natural environment and biodiversity, focusing on challenges of climate changesustainable green practices, and technological innovations, connection with the Blue economy, and alignment with the Ocean Decade objectives and the UNESCO Strategic Development Goals.

As our Technical Manager you will provide technical leadership and day-to-day management of a new, innovative project to enrich the Crown Estate’s Marine Data Exchange (MDE) with heritage information generated by marine development. The MDE Heritage Accelerator project will simultaneously enhance the National Marine Heritage Record (NMHR) to enable better and faster decision-making in delivering clean energy offshore. The project is funded through the Crown Estate’s Offshore Wind Evidence & Change (OWEC) programme.

General Working Obligations:

The conditions of work for a Resident Academic of the University of Malta, are set out in the ‘Collective Agreement for Academic Staff of the University of Malta’.

Full-time Resident Academic staff are required to give a commitment based on a 40- hour per week with flexible times throughout the year, that is not only during semester time, depending on agreed timetables and distributed reasonably between teaching, academic research and academic administration.

Full-time Resident Academic staff are normally expected to be available for four and a half days per week to deliver their academic duties, meet with students and to participate actively in the academic life of the Department.

The Department of Classics & Archaeology

The Department of Classics & Archaeology is a friendly department with an energetic academic and support staff dedicated to the teaching and study of the ancient world and archaeological practice to local, visiting, and overseas students. We have an active research programme that also includes a number of international collaborations in the fields of prehistory, the history of archaeology, maritime archaeology, and environmental archaeology. We have our own building on campus for teaching and research, and have access to scientific facilities, laboratories, and expertise in a number of faculties. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered in both Classics and Archaeology.

One of these courses is the MA in Global Maritime Archaeology. A number of projects in the field of maritime and underwater archaeology are conducted by academics and . The Malta Shipwreck Project sees the utilisation of state-of-the-art remote sensing equipment to map the seabed and create an archaeological map of Malta and Gozo’s underwater cultural heritage. One of the results of this broad survey is the development of Aviation Archaeology Underwater – a new and emerging discipline in the field of Historical Archaeology. The Phoenician Shipwreck Project is currently one of the most important excavations in the central Mediterranean and brings together numerous partners including the CNRS (Aix), and the University of Urbino. Moreover a training excavation of a harbour deposit datable to the Imperial and Late Roman periods is conducted. Submerged structures around the coasts of Malta and Gozo also form part of the research programme. Lastly, local ethnographic studies related to traditional boatbuilding, fishing and other related maritime work (dockyards, stevedores etc) are an integral part of the programme’s work.

The appointee will be required to carry out the following specific duties, as well as other that may from time to time be required by the Department of Classics & Archaeology:

  • Responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to the Maritime Archaeology Programme within the Department of Classics and Archaeology.
  • Organise, manage and analyse the data produced by the programme’s projects.
  • Contribute to ongoing projects. Moreover, the Lecturer will be expected to develop his/her own projects.
  • Undertake report writing including publication in scientific journals, and dissemination of project results. They may be required to make presentations at conferences and meetings, locally and abroad, as well as the organisation of a maritime archaeology lecture series.

Research Fellow in the sedaDNA of Ancient Ports

We are looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to be part of the PortGEN Project team with special responsibility for the extraction, analysis and application of sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA). The purpose of this role is to undertake sedaDNA and related research in accordance with the specified research project under the supervision of the award holder Professor Tony Brown.

Port harbors are the umbilical cords of civilizations uniting land and sea and can provide a unique ‘window’ on population, diet/health, technology and environmental change. Being the lifeblood of complex societies, ports can reveal how society adapted to changing environmental conditions, from disease to floods. So far, the ‘past of ports’ has been explored using archaeology, texts, plant/animal remains (seeds and bones), microfossils (e.g. pollen) and geochemistry. Since the discovery that extra-cellular ancient DNA can be preserved in sediments 20 years ago, it has been used in lakes, estuaries, floodplains, soils and marine sediments. Recent research outside archaeology has shown that shallow-marine sediments can retain DNA for thousands of years as so-called ancient sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA).

Important recent studies of the sedimentology and geomorphology of ancient ports has have also allowed us to understand both the processes of siltation and the effects of dredging. This is critical to deriving reliable time-sequences spanning well-defined periods in Classical antiquity. These advances will be coupled with some new sedimentological techniques (portable optical stimulated luminescence), which will be trialed on two smaller port sites in southern England and one in the south of France. The sedaDNA will be largely identified using metabarcoding, which involves DNA extraction and then using polymerized chain-reactions (PCR) to amplify targeted regions of ancient DNA sequences from the sediment. But we will also use techniques that do not use PCR, to look at DNA quality and a variety of micro-biological remains including pathogens and even bacteria from the human and animal guts.

So PortGEN will be the first project to systematically explore this potential using harbour sediments, much already collected and from some of the best-known ports in the ancient world. This includes Classical ports at (Rome (Ostia, Portus), Venice, Ephesus & many more. Trident Archäologie has grown rapidly in recent years and we are now seeking to appoint a Marine Geophysicist to join our experienced team based in Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. This opportunity also offers the successful candidate the chance to work alongside geophysicists within our UK-based parent company, Wessex Archaeology, which is the largest team of archaeological marine geophysicists in the sector, working on projects from around the world.


The appointment can be with either our German or our Dutch office, with flexible and home working arrangements considered. The salary expectation for a full-time position will depend on the applicant’s qualifications and experience.


The successful applicant will assist in the production and delivery of a range of marine geophysical projects. The primary responsibilities of the role include:

  • Processing and archaeological interpretation of a range of marine geophysical data sets (sidescan sonar, magnetometer and multibeam bathymetry);
  • Interpretation of 2D and 3D shallow seismic data for quaternary geological classification;
  • Ensuring all work and resulting reporting is carried out in accordance with relevant standards and guidance;
  • Survey design, data acquisition and quality control of third party marine geophysical surveys.


Essential skills for the role include:

  • A good degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Geophysics, Archaeology or Earth Sciences);
  • Experience in marine geophysical data processing and interpretation;
  • Shallow geological interpretation from seismic or Sub-Bottom Profiler data;
  • The ability to interrogate, interpret and integrate data from numerous sources;
  • Good organisation skills, and prior experience working to deadlines;
  • The ability to write and communicate clearly, and experience in producing technical reports in English (B2 level or better);
  • Good knowledge of typical computer applications, especially MS Office;
  • EU Driving license;
  • Happy to work from a home office and to work extended hours during fieldwork projects;
  • Flexible and happy to integrate in changing project teams and working with colleagues across our group;
  • EU passport or the right to live and work in the EU.


Further desirable skills for the role include:

  • German or Dutch language skills at B2 level or better;
  • Good GIS knowledge (ArcGIS, QGIS);
  • Experience of software development in python and other languages;
  • Prior experience in the offshore survey industry;

The SeisLab Aarhus research group at the Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in marine geophysics and marine geoarchaeology. We are searching for a motivated and engaged researcher with experience in marine geophysics to be part of a newly started research group studying late Quaternary and Holocene processes and landscape evolution.

The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years and 9 months with possibility of 3 months extension if funding allows.

The postdoctoral work will be part of the international ERC Synergy Grant project SUBNORDICA, where scientists in the fields of geology, geophysics, and archaeology work together to develop methodologies for finding submerged stone age settlements in deeper water settings such as the North Sea. The research group is leading a work package where the focus is on the palaeolandscapes in the eastern North Sea. Other members in the group work on sea level modelling, probabilistic inversion of geophysical data, and automated prediction of archaeological sites from geological and archaeological parameters.


Job description

The postdoctoral position will focus on palaeolandscape modelling to generate palaeotopography and palaeocoastlines using both legacy and new geophysical, geotechnical and geological data primarily from the Danish and German EEZ. The post doc will be responsible for the interpretation of marine seismic and acoustic data. Specific tasks include synthesizing existing interpretations across the eastern North Sea, as well as generating new results from seismic mapping and data integration. The candidate will further study the role of critical topographical elements such as the Dogger Bank and the Elbe Palaeo Valley and how such may have influenced the landscape evolution and in turn the habitation of Doggerland.

The position provides possibilities for offshore field work and participation in joint research expeditions in the North Sea and surveys in the Baltic Sea. It is also expected that the postdoc takes part in coordination and organization of various research group activities and contributes to supervision and teaching at the department as a co-supervisor of (under-) graduate students and as guest lecturer. Within the SUBNORDICA project’s framework, there is considerable freedom for the postdoctoral researcher and the candidate will be working closely together with other post docs and senior staff involved in the research group and the larger SUBNORDICA project.


Facilities

All laboratory facilities at the Department of Geoscience will be available for the research project. This includes the acquisition, processing and interpretation facilities at SeisLab Aarhus for both multi- and single channel marine seismic and acoustic data, Aarhus University’s research vessel Aurora, as well as an advanced sediment core laboratory.


Qualifications

The qualified applicant will have a PhD degree in geoscience or related fields. Candidates should have a background in high-resolution marine seismic and acoustic methods and have experience with marine geophysical data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. A good record of offshore field work experience is beneficial. The ideal candidate will further have experience with the shallow subsurface of the North Sea or other similar settings, and have some insights into sediment cores and marine geoarchaeology. Experience with seismic interpretation and GIS software is required while experience with numerical modeling and programming is beneficial.

The candidate is expected to have well-documented research experience with academic publications and presentations at conferences and meetings. The applicant should also have effective organizational skills, with previous project management being beneficial, and be able to work collaboratively as part of a team. Oral and written English skills are required.

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering 2 * PhD positions in the Marine Geology department

During the late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, Northern Europe was populated by mobile hunter gatherers. Due to their non-sedentary lifestyle, traces of these
societies are difficult to find, which hampers our understanding of how they lived and developed. Some parts of the SW Baltic Sea, however, only drowned in the Holocene and may therefore preserve anthropogenic structures and landscapes from these Palaeolithic/ early Mesolithic times. Recently, a submerged stonewall, likely a Stone Age architecture used for hunting, has been discovered in the SW Baltic Sea.

A 3-years project (SEASCAPE) is funded by the Leibniz Association aiming to
understand in more details this structure, identify other hitherto unrecognized Stone Age megastructures, and reconstruct the paleo-environment in which these structures were build. The SEASCAPE project involves archaeologists, geologists, geophysicists and paleoclimatologists from the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW), the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA), the University of Rostock and Kiel University.

In the frame of the SEASCAPE project, the Marine Geology Department of the IOW is seeking for two PhD students to:

Geo 06/2024 Analyse sediment cores retrieved from basins in the SW Baltic
Sea. The sediments will be used in a “multi-proxy” approach (sedimentology,
organic and inorganic geochemistry, micropalaeontology) to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, when the stonewall might have been build.

Geo 07/2024 Analyse marine geophysical (seismic, multibeam echosounder,
side-scan sonar) and visual data to reconstruct the detailed morphology and texture of the stonewall and search for other submerged Stone Age architectures at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
