Critical Work Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Assignments include a variety of duties, to include documentary research, imagery georeferencing, data management, datum conversion, imagery acquisition, historical document interpretation, secondary source readings, geographically bounded studies, field survey, survey mapping, witness interviews, method recommendation, map production, and briefings to Agency leadership.
  • Advance investigations into MIAs through data, archive, and field research analysis.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the application of geospatial analytical methods and technology including GIS, Geophysical Survey, and other remote sensing technology.
  • Provides technical GIS support for case development, to include creating specialized maps, conducting imagery analysis, geo-rectifying images, managing GIS data, providing technical expertise on remote sensing methodology, and imagery collection.
  • Provides high level geospatial analysis that advances cases by synthesizing geospatial, historical, and archaeological data sets.
  • Conducts interdisciplinary collaboration with peers (researchers, geospatial analysts, etc.) and incorporate their findings in reports.
  • Supports field operation and provides technical GIS support for remote sensing operations and other field investigative/research activities and debriefs field operations personnel to add to the body of knowledge surrounding associated cases, as well as reports.
  • Occasional national and international travel as required by the Agency.
  • Work directly and independently with clients.
  • Completes recurring duties independently, but refers deviations, problems, or unfamiliar situations to the supervisor for assistance.
  • Follows all client policies and procedures.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • B.A./B.S. degree in anthropology, archaeology, geography, geology, or related field and GIS Certificate from accredited GIS/Geography program or equivalent education and experience.
  • 1 year of GIS-based field data collection in the fields of Archaeology, Anthropology, Geography, Geology, Natural Sciences, military operations, surveying, or related field preferred.
  • GISP Preferred (GIS Certification Institute – GISCI certification).
  • High level of proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS and related GIS software
  • Possess a broad knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of GIS and analysis as gained through education in geography or its application in a relevant field and relevant job experience.
  • Ability to conduct research on a diverse array of cases with scattered and scant source material.
  • Ability to apply flexible approaches and versatility to conducting research.
  • Knowledge of professional writing styles based on professional experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by publication, technical report, and conference presentation record.

Candidate profile:

Applications are invited for the position of Scientist to contribute to the MCHC projects. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and contribute marine archaeological surveys, site assessments, and heritage management projects using advanced geophysical and remote sensing methods. This role combines scientific research, fieldwork, data interpretation, and reporting to enhance the documentation and preservation of submerged cultural heritage. Research Fellow in the sedaDNA of Ancient Ports

We are looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to be part of the PortGEN Project team with special responsibility for the extraction, analysis and application of sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA). The purpose of this role is to undertake sedaDNA and related research in accordance with the specified research project under the supervision of the award holder Professor Tony Brown.

Port harbors are the umbilical cords of civilizations uniting land and sea and can provide a unique ‘window’ on population, diet/health, technology and environmental change. Being the lifeblood of complex societies, ports can reveal how society adapted to changing environmental conditions, from disease to floods. So far, the ‘past of ports’ has been explored using archaeology, texts, plant/animal remains (seeds and bones), microfossils (e.g. pollen) and geochemistry. Since the discovery that extra-cellular ancient DNA can be preserved in sediments 20 years ago, it has been used in lakes, estuaries, floodplains, soils and marine sediments. Recent research outside archaeology has shown that shallow-marine sediments can retain DNA for thousands of years as so-called ancient sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA).

Important recent studies of the sedimentology and geomorphology of ancient ports has have also allowed us to understand both the processes of siltation and the effects of dredging. This is critical to deriving reliable time-sequences spanning well-defined periods in Classical antiquity. These advances will be coupled with some new sedimentological techniques (portable optical stimulated luminescence), which will be trialed on two smaller port sites in southern England and one in the south of France. The sedaDNA will be largely identified using metabarcoding, which involves DNA extraction and then using polymerized chain-reactions (PCR) to amplify targeted regions of ancient DNA sequences from the sediment. But we will also use techniques that do not use PCR, to look at DNA quality and a variety of micro-biological remains including pathogens and even bacteria from the human and animal guts.

So PortGEN will be the first project to systematically explore this potential using harbour sediments, much already collected and from some of the best-known ports in the ancient world. This includes Classical ports at (Rome (Ostia, Portus), Venice, Ephesus & many more. The project is highly collaborative with the CNRS in France (Strasbourg), The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute in the UK, experts on the Mediterranean world, and a large number of site excavators. It is believed that PortGEN will provide new insights into the lives & economic activities of ancient civilizations.

A working knowledge and experience in sedaDNA is desirable but not essential as candidates with research experience in cognate fields (e.g. biomarkers, molecular ecology, palaeoecology) may be considered as full training in sedaDNA methods can be provided.

Trident Archäologie has grown rapidly in recent years and we are now seeking to appoint a Marine Geophysicist to join our experienced team based in Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. This opportunity also offers the successful candidate the chance to work alongside geophysicists within our UK-based parent company, Wessex Archaeology, which is the largest team of archaeological marine geophysicists in the sector, working on projects from around the world.


The appointment can be with either our German or our Dutch office, with flexible and home working arrangements considered. The salary expectation for a full-time position will depend on the applicant’s qualifications and experience.


The successful applicant will assist in the production and delivery of a range of marine geophysical projects. The primary responsibilities of the role include:

  • Processing and archaeological interpretation of a range of marine geophysical data sets (sidescan sonar, magnetometer and multibeam bathymetry);
  • Interpretation of 2D and 3D shallow seismic data for quaternary geological classification;
  • Ensuring all work and resulting reporting is carried out in accordance with relevant standards and guidance;
  • Survey design, data acquisition and quality control of third party marine geophysical surveys.


Essential skills for the role include:

  • A good degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Geophysics, Archaeology or Earth Sciences);
  • Experience in marine geophysical data processing and interpretation;
  • Shallow geological interpretation from seismic or Sub-Bottom Profiler data;
  • The ability to interrogate, interpret and integrate data from numerous sources;
  • Good organisation skills, and prior experience working to deadlines;
  • The ability to write and communicate clearly, and experience in producing technical reports in English (B2 level or better);
  • Good knowledge of typical computer applications, especially MS Office;
  • EU Driving license;
  • Happy to work from a home office and to work extended hours during fieldwork projects;

Postdoctoral position in Marine Geophysics and Marine Geoarchaeology

The SeisLab Aarhus research group at the Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in marine geophysics and marine geoarchaeology. We are searching for a motivated and engaged researcher with experience in marine geophysics to be part of a newly started research group studying late Quaternary and Holocene processes and landscape evolution.

The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years and 9 months with possibility of 3 months extension if funding allows.

The postdoctoral work will be part of the international ERC Synergy Grant project SUBNORDICA, where scientists in the fields of geology, geophysics, and archaeology work together to develop methodologies for finding submerged stone age settlements in deeper water settings such as the North Sea. The research group is leading a work package where the focus is on the palaeolandscapes in the eastern North Sea. Other members in the group work on sea level modelling, probabilistic inversion of geophysical data, and automated prediction of archaeological sites from geological and archaeological parameters.


Job description

The postdoctoral position will focus on palaeolandscape modelling to generate palaeotopography and palaeocoastlines using both legacy and new geophysical, geotechnical and geological data primarily from the Danish and German EEZ. The post doc will be responsible for the interpretation of marine seismic and acoustic data. Specific tasks include synthesizing existing interpretations across the eastern North Sea, as well as generating new results from seismic mapping and data integration. The candidate will further study the role of critical topographical elements such as the Dogger Bank and the Elbe Palaeo Valley and how such may have influenced the landscape evolution and in turn the habitation of Doggerland.

The position provides possibilities for offshore field work and participation in joint research expeditions in the North Sea and surveys in the Baltic Sea. It is also expected that the postdoc takes part in coordination and organization of various research group activities and contributes to supervision and teaching at the department as a co-supervisor of (under-) graduate students and as guest lecturer. Within the SUBNORDICA project’s framework, there is considerable freedom for the postdoctoral researcher and the candidate will be working closely together with other post docs and senior staff involved in the research group and the larger SUBNORDICA project.


Facilities

All laboratory facilities at the Department of Geoscience will be available for the research project. This includes the acquisition, processing and interpretation facilities at SeisLab Aarhus for both multi- and single channel marine seismic and acoustic data, Aarhus University’s research vessel Aurora, as well as an advanced sediment core laboratory.


Qualifications

The qualified applicant will have a PhD degree in geoscience or related fields. Candidates should have a background in high-resolution marine seismic and acoustic methods and have experience with marine geophysical data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. A good record of offshore field work experience is beneficial. The ideal candidate will further have experience with the shallow subsurface of the North Sea or other similar settings, and have some insights into sediment cores and marine geoarchaeology. Experience with seismic interpretation and GIS software is required while experience with numerical modeling and programming is beneficial.

The candidate is expected to have well-documented research experience with academic publications and presentations at conferences and meetings. The applicant should also have effective organizational skills, with previous project management being beneficial, and be able to work collaboratively as part of a team. Oral and written English skills are required.

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering 2 * PhD positions in the Marine Geology department

During the late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, Northern Europe was populated by mobile hunter gatherers. Due to their non-sedentary lifestyle, traces of these
societies are difficult to find, which hampers our understanding of how they lived and developed. Some parts of the SW Baltic Sea, however, only drowned in the Holocene and may therefore preserve anthropogenic structures and landscapes from these Palaeolithic/ early Mesolithic times. Recently, a submerged stonewall, likely a Stone Age architecture used for hunting, has been discovered in the SW Baltic Sea.

A 3-years project (SEASCAPE) is funded by the Leibniz Association aiming to
understand in more details this structure, identify other hitherto unrecognized Stone Age megastructures, and reconstruct the paleo-environment in which these structures were build. The SEASCAPE project involves archaeologists, geologists, geophysicists and paleoclimatologists from the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW), the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA), the University of Rostock and Kiel University.

In the frame of the SEASCAPE project, the Marine Geology Department of the IOW is seeking for two PhD students to:

Geo 06/2024 Analyse sediment cores retrieved from basins in the SW Baltic
Sea. The sediments will be used in a “multi-proxy” approach (sedimentology,
organic and inorganic geochemistry, micropalaeontology) to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, when the stonewall might have been build.

Geo 07/2024 Analyse marine geophysical (seismic, multibeam echosounder,
side-scan sonar) and visual data to reconstruct the detailed morphology and texture of the stonewall and search for other submerged Stone Age architectures at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering a

PhD position in the Marine Geology department

The wealth of well-preserved submerged archaeological sites of Holocene hunter gatherer-fisher communities in the SW Baltic Sea is an outstanding characteristic of the region. Detailed geophysical surveys of such areas have the potential to reconstruct landscapes on a microregional scale and help to define preferred zones of Stone Age inhabitation and thus optimal zones for archaeological exploration.

The PhD position is within the framework of the European synergy grant project SUBNORDICA funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The project investigates drowned landscapes in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It combines expertise from the Universities of Bradford (UK) and Aarhus (DK), the Museum Moesgaard (DK), the Lower Saxony Institute for Historical Coastal Research (D) and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (D) as well as further European partners.

The PhD position will investigate the drowned landscapes surrounding submarine archaeological sites in the SW Baltic Sea. The research objective is to reconstruct the topography of different paleolandscapes on the basis of geophysical data (seismic, multibeam echosounder, side scan sonar) and to interpret them with the help of archaeological and geological data.

What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Maritime Archaeologist who works with the Foundation and NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) as the primary point of contact for maritime archaeology and history. Specifically, the Maritime Archaeologist will be responsible for assisting with the sanctuary designation process and supporting related cultural resource management activities in the Eastern Region.

In 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration directed the Department of Commerce to move forward with the designation process for five nominated national marine sanctuaries. These designation efforts support President Biden’s America the Beautiful initiative by expanding the National Marine Sanctuary System, addressing inequitable access to the outdoors, and supporting locally-led conservation. 

This role is currently offered as a two-year term position. Position may be extended based on continued availability of funding; however, availability of funding is not guaranteed. The Maritime Archaeologist supports the scope of a federal cooperative agreement award between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and ONMS that focuses on public engagement in the designation process of new national marine sanctuaries.   • Apply subject matter expertise in the field of maritime archaeology to support the identification, documentation, evaluation, and preservation of cultural resources within the Eastern Region. This includes both application of expertise in supporting historical and background research and supporting archaeological fieldwork efforts.  
  • Support the planning and execution of field operations related to archaeological resource identification and documentation, which may include scientific diving activities and operation of remote sensing equipment (e.g., magnetometer/gradiometer, side scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, sub bottom profiler, Remotely Operated Vehicles, autonomous systems) along with related data-processing, analysis, and technical report preparation. 
  • Conduct historical research on sanctuary resources and assist with research and data collection to determine eligibility of sites for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. 
  • Support development and implementation of maritime and cultural heritage protection, education, outreach, and research programs. Develop outreach products and policy documents. Provide content for communications materials, including the development of new content for web pages, social media, exhibits, publications and other public facing communication efforts. Develop, coordinate, and support outreach events and public events highlighting the science and work of the proposed national marine sanctuaries. 
  • Identify and foster external partnerships.



Who You Are

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in maritime/underwater archaeology or a closely-related field.  
  • Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. 
  • Archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should include a combination of professional experience in archeological survey (including site documentation methods and remote sensing survey), excavation, laboratory analysis, data processing, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral, to include experience writing technical reports detailing the results of archaeological survey and historical and archival research, and preparing content for public engagement and outreach purposes.
  • Ability to meet the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR Part 61).

The purpose of this updated guidance document is to describe geophysical surveying techniques that can reveal information about the historic environment as might be encountered on, within and beneath the seabed around England. This draft guidance has been written for commissioners, practitioners and end users of marine geophysical survey data.

There are a wide range of potential users for the guidance, ranging from archaeology students starting their careers, through to highly experienced survey managers and those in the field collecting data. The guidance is intended as useful resource for all end users. As such, it has been designed so that each chapter can be read independently with the pertinent information easily accessible. We would like to seek views from across the sector on this consultation document. The consultation feedback form allows consultees the opportunity to provide feedback on those chapters that they feel are relevant to them.

Ensures that archaeological concerns are addressed in the formation of National and Regional policy that leads to the development of regulations, implementation guidelines, and procedures for renewable energy, oil and gas and marine minerals in the Atlantic Region on the OCS. Develops and/or maintains, in coordination with Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), databases for archaeological resources.

3. Reviews pertinent Federal laws (e.g., National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA) and regulations (e.g., 36 CFR Part 800) to determine effects on archaeological resources matters and on BSEE’s OCS program.

4. Prepares technical and policy documents concerning archaeological resource and anthropological data and information and expected minerals activities impacts for BSEE/BOEM correspondence, briefing material, and issues and option papers. Prepares highly specialized reports for use in decision-making by the Agency, or other Federal agencies, or as testimony before Congress.

5. Initiates and takes lead responsibility for the planning and conducting of coordination meetings, industry/public workshops, Information Transfer Meeting (ITM) sessions, and other conference work related to national historic preservation oversight. Represents the BSEE/Office at professional meetings, and on task forces or committees involving Federal, State, or private agencies and individuals.

6. Leads any archaeology and historic preservation-related studies/research/compliance projects in support of the Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) or Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for BSEE. Develops, designs, procures, administers, and evaluates major science/compliance studies/research that may require participating in or overseeing the collection, standardization, and analysis of environmental data related to OCS resources and/or industry activities and identifying specific archaeological and historic preservation issues and problems that will need to be addressed and resolved through additional research and/or coordination.BSEE has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework with supervisory approval.

This opportunity is for a communications-focused graduate student to engage and contribute to NOAA Ocean Exploration marine archaeology activities and digital communication priorities. The student will work with NOAA Ocean Exploration archaeologists and communications staff to better understand significant historical sites from past and current maritime heritage-focused expeditions supported or conducted by the office with the primary aim to help create public-facing content for NOAA Ocean Exploration’s new archaeology web page. Additional activities may include historical research for other communication, education, or outreach products and related historic preservation activities.

Key activities and learning outcomes:
  • Write web content and co-design NOAA Ocean Exploration’s archaeology webpage. No access to or experience with web-design software is needed. Basic knowledge of Microsoft software (Word, Excel, etc.) and the Google suite are needed.
  • Conduct historical research, gather supporting documents and imagery, and write public-facing content for Pacific-focused underwater cultural heritage fieldwork.

Marine Project Archaeologist / Field Director

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented Marine Project Archaeologist / Field Director. The Marine Project Archaeologist will provide support to cultural resource projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic, greater US, and potentially international work, as available. The Marine Project Archaeologist will have knowledge of field excavation techniques, implement archaeological inventory, evaluation, and data recovery efforts, analyze precontact and historic artifacts, and prepare compliance reports.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the scoping of marine archaeological projects and utilize GIS, site records, and other data sources to identify locations where maritime sites can occur.
  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) documentation pertaining to cultural resources.
  • Provides regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients.
  • Serves as a Field Director and has experience in directing field crews under the guidance of the Principal Investigator including scheduling work and making individual or teamwork assignments and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods.
  • Supports all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance.
  • Collects information and makes judgments through observation, interviews, and the review of documents.
  • Writes archaeological reports and/or prepares archaeological site forms and assists the Principal Investigator with making decisions about project alternatives, NRHP evaluations, and effects on historic properties.
  • Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards
  • Performs manual labor and has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS + 2 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education.
  • Valid US Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology or History.
  • MA or MS in Anthropology or related field.
  • Completion of a university-based archaeological field school.
  • Minimum two years of supervisory experience (e.g., Crew Chief).
  • Knowledgeable of geophysical survey methodologies such as sub-bottom-profiler (SBP) systems, ultra-high resolution seismic (UHRS) systems, Side-scan sonar data collection, and Marine magnetometer data collection.
  • Experience with the interpretation of sub-bottom and shallow seismic data interpretation and review of geotechnical data for identification of potential inundated submerged paleo landscapes
  • Demonstrated use of HYPACK software and associated data analysis modules.
  • Demonstrated use of Sonarwiz software and associated data analysis modules.
  • Demonstrated use of with SeiSee Seismic analysis software and/or IHS Markit Kingdom software.
  • AAUS Scientific Diver or similar.
  • Have Rescue Diver or higher national certification.
  • Completed or willing to complete basic SOLAS or similar offshore safety training.
  • Demonstrated experience using GPS units, Total Stations, GIS (e.g., ESRI products), and graphical illustration software (e.g., Adobe).
  • Experience conducting terrestrial archaeological investigations as a Crew Chief.
  • Demonstrated experience writing technical reports and papers.
