At Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, we are committed to using our skills as historians to help make systemic change in our work and in the museum field. As part of this, we have spent the past two years working to remove barriers to access and pursuing new research projects that shine a light on untold stories of women and people of color in the Champlain Valley. Yet, we recognize that there is more work to do to create space, challenge bias, and dismantle systems that reinforce inequality.

In 2022, we are excited to introduce a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Summer Interpretation Fellowship. The primary goals of the fellowship are to make our exhibitions and visitor experience more accessible and inclusive for visitors, and to provide opportunities for early career scholars and museum professionals to have an impact with the public.

The DEI Summer Interpretation Fellow position has three main objectives: to build upon the current exhibitions and collections at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for the visitors’ experience; to develop new museum interpretation and interactive experiences based on the Fellow’s area of expertise, interest, and previous research; and to help make exhibitions more accessible and engaging for a wide range of audiences, with a specific focus on incorporating previously underrepresented perspectives into Museum interpretation. The Fellow and the interpretation team will be exploring questions including: How do we make our collections/exhibits more relevant to what is going on in today’s world? How do we connect visitors of all ages and backgrounds to the history of the region in ways that are meaningful to them, and support learning a more inclusive, comprehensive history?

The Fellow will also spend significant time interpreting the exhibitions onsite with visitors, exploring meaningful connections between the content and the visitor. Through their research and onsite experiences, they will develop training materials for volunteer interpreters and staff. The Fellow will also gain experience in the day-to-day logistics of Museum operations and work closely with staff in Admissions, Visitor Experience, and volunteers.

NOAA Ocean Exploration is pleased to announce its Ocean Exploration Fiscal Year 2023 Funding Opportunity. NOAA Ocean Exploration is the only federal program dedicated to exploring the deep ocean, closing prominent gaps in our basic understanding of U.S. deep waters and the seafloor and delivering the ocean information needed to strengthen the economy, health, and security of our nation. 

We are soliciting proposals for interdisciplinary ocean exploration in waters under U.S. jurisdiction that support national priorities, including NOAA science and technology priorities of uncrewed systems, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, ’omics, data, and citizen science and the Strategic Priorities for Ocean Exploration and Characterization of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone (draft report to be released April 2022) developed per the National Strategy for Mapping, Exploring, and Characterizing the United States Exclusive Economic Zone. 

For Fiscal Year 2023, NOAA Ocean Exploration is seeking proposals focused on any one of the following three themes: 

OCEAN EXPLORATION and DISCOVERY: Proposals should be in support of the NOAA ocean exploration mission to explore unknown or poorly known ocean areas, processes, and resources in waters deeper than 200 meters. NOAA Ocean Exploration is particularly interested in exploration for, and discovery of, microorganisms, sponges, corals, and other organisms in waters deeper than 200 meters that may have biopharmaceutical or biotechnological potential. Such proposals should reference the NOAA ’omics strategy. All proposals should reference the National Strategy for Mapping, Exploring, and Characterizing the United States Exclusive Economic Zone.

MARITIME HERITAGE: Proposals should address exploration and discovery of significant maritime heritage resources that improve historical knowledge and inform decisions concerning preservation, management, and potential seafloor use. Maritime heritage projects can be conducted in any water depth. Data products must benefit other academic and resource management disciplines. The use of autonomous and other innovative technologies is a NOAA Ocean Exploration priority.

TECHNOLOGY: Proposals should feature application of new or novel use of existing ocean technologies or innovative methods that could increase the scope and efficiency of acquiring ocean exploration data and expanding its availability and use. They must be focused on the development and testing of innovative sensors and systems that could increase the capabilities of autonomous or remotely operated seagoing systems. Proposed ocean technologies must be applicable to water depths of 200 meters or greater, preferably full-ocean depth (testing in shallower water or lab-based testing is acceptable) and must address at least one of the defined ocean exploration variables as referenced in the “Exploration Variables Identified by NOAA Ocean Exploration” technical memorandum. Proposals must also reference at least one of the NOAA science and technology focus areas.

The deadline for the pre-proposals, which are required, is May 24, 2022, at 4:59 p.m. EDT. Full proposals are due by September 29, 2022.

The primary duty of this position is working for the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), in partnership with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc. as a project archaeologist. This includes all aspect of terrestrial and submerged archaeological research, assist with reports and National Register Nominations, and support public archaeology onsite at the Museum. The Department of Marine Resources is currently seeking one (1) contract worker for the Coastal Preserves Bureau.

The MDMR manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands, and waterfront areas to provide for the balanced commercial, recreational, educational, and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.

JOB DUTIES

This position will have operational responsibility for the coordination of archaeology survey of MDMR’s Coastal Preserve Sites, which will allow for the full consideration of cultural and historic values in our land management and project compliance activities under the provisions of the Mississippi Antiquities Law. This position will also be required to meet MDMR response needs for archaeological resources on privately owned lands when requested, including recording new discoveries, and assessing impacts to known sites. This position is part of the Coastal Preserves Bureau and reports to the Coastal Preserves Bureau Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Completes archaeological surveys and Phase II/III investigations in accordance with the Mississippi Standards for Archaeological Practice.
• Supervises additional personnel on archaeological projects as needed.
• Performs Laboratory Analysis on historic and prehistoric artifacts as necessary following survey work. Travel may be required.
• Completes archaeological survey reports in accordance with Mississippi Standards for Archaeological Practice, including evaluating sites for significance according to the National Register Criteria for Eligibility.
• Documents archaeological and historical resources using a variety of media (including, but not limited to, photography, audio, film, mapping, forms, and hand-held instruments).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications the MDMR is seeking for this position include:

• Education: Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or history, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience completing Phase I, II and Phase III investigations on historic or prehistoric sites in the Southeast, including laboratory analysis and reporting.
• Other: Must possess a valid Mississippi driver’s license or driver’s license from another state (Mississippi residents must have a Mississippi driver’s license). MDMR will verify the driver’s license.

COMPENSATION AND HOURS WORKED

The Curatorial and Outreach Associate will handle a full range of tasks associated with developing and disseminating the Conservancy’s growing collection of art and artifacts, as well as help build public support for the Conservancy’s mission, including its future museum and innovation center.  The position’s duties will be refined based on the skillset and interests of the successful applicant. These tasks could include:

• Researching and writing about compelling topics relating to the history of the SS United States for Conservancy publications
• Developing concepts and content for digital exhibitions and YouTube outreach
• Assisting in the development of proposals focused on securing support for the Conservancy’s growing curatorial collections, archival records, and future museum planning.
• Supporting Conservancy outreach by responding to public, media, and member requests for historical information and Conservancy programming
• Liaising with other museums and educational institutions
• Supporting social-digital outreach, including drafting content for dissemination through the Conservancy’s social media accounts
• Supporting the development and editing of podcast episodes and the Conservancy’s oral history series

SS United States Conservancy

The SS United States Conservancy, a national nonprofit organization founded in 2004, is dedicated to protecting, revitalizing, and promoting the historic ocean liner SS United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in America and current holder of the transatlantic speed record. “America’s Flagship” transported four U.S. presidents, business moguls, movie stars, tourists, artists, authors, and immigrants, and the vessel is the sole surviving American ocean liner from the golden age of trans-Atlantic travel. The Conservancy purchased the SS United States in February 2011 and is working to secure her future as a mixed-use, stationary development which will include a museum and innovation center. As plans advance, the Conservancy is building its collections of archival documentation, art, and artifacts from the ship. Curatorial staff is committed to preserving and disseminating its collections through social media platforms, digital exhibitions, oral histories, and public events.

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking an experienced and well-qualified vessel and operations coordinator to provide vessel support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) in Key West, FL. FKNMS operates a fleet of 16 small boats ranging from 20’ to 39’ in length. 

A qualified person is required to assist in managing the FKNMS small boats, ensuring they are operated and maintained in compliance with USCG and NOAA policies and regulations. The vessel and operations coordinator is needed to assist the FKNMS Superintendent with vessel personnel assignments and cruise requirements, based upon the sanctuary’s mission requirements and vessel maintenance. 

Tasks

• Ensure FKNMS small boats are operated and maintained in compliance with NOAA Small Boat Program requirements.
• Coordinate and support emergent repairs to FKNMS small boat assets if and when required. Provide oversight during shipyard and repair periods.
• Provide and coordinate vessel schedules and work packages in consultation with FKNMS management.
• Coordinate with NMS sites and partners to develop cruise plans for vessels of opportunity including ships, ROVs, and manned submersibles.
• Ensure current training for vessel operator and crewmembers; and keep record of credentials and qualifications.
• Comply with safety stand-downs per NOAA procedures.
• Schedule vessel maintenance and dry dock periods per NOAA procedures and in coordination with the site management. Provide oversight during shipyard and repair periods.
• Review of all Project Instructions to an approving authority including Cruise Plans, and Float Plans, as directed.
• Assist FKNMS in physical facilities assessments and planning as it relates to vessel operations.
• Represent FKNMS in vessel-related intra- and inter-agency meetings and partnerships, as necessary.
• Coordinate vessel and annual schedules for FKNMS.
• Coordinate annual vessel Requests for Proposal (RFP) process.
• Schedule vessel maintenance and dry dock periods per NOAA procedures.
• Coordinate arrangements for vessel departures, arrivals, mobilizations and de-mobilizations.
• Help oversee vessel crew and project manning.
• Review, revise, and implement pertinent policies and regulations related to NOAA small boats and applicable facilities.
• Coordinate and track training and resulting credentials of vessel operators, crew members, FKNMS staff members.
• Develop annual vessel accomplishment report.
• Assist FKNMS in maritime facilities assessments and planning.
• Serve as vessel operator or crew member, if qualified, for small boat underway missions, as required.
• Lead field operations, as required.
• Be ready and available for emergency responses.

Requirements

Required certifications and experience

• Possess an active USCG Masters license (100 tons or above) and/or a degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Resource Management, Biology, Geology, Environmental Studies, Maritime Archaeology, electrical or mechanical engineering or related scientific fields (Bachelor’s degree and four years of additional experience may be substituted in lieu of advanced degree).
• At least five (5) years of experience providing coordination and management of site/vessel crew, operations, maintenance, and scheduling.
• Experience with NOAA vessel operations/coordination, or similar research vessel management is required.
• Experience mobilizing research cruises, including tracking personnel and preparing and approving cruise instructions, purchasing and organizing field gear, and coordinating with research vessel operations personnel.
• Physically able to lift and carry 50 pounds to assist with mission mobilization and maintenance.

Highly desired skills and experience

• Familiarity with operating and navigating marine vessels in Florida Keys’ waters.
• Current Frist Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
