Underwater Archaeologist (Contract Position)
Role:
This position acts as the lead field archaeologist directing a group of divers in underwater archaeological investigations. Fieldwork takes place in varying visibilities. This position has a direct report of the lead Project Manager and collaborates with Project Managers and the Project Archaeologist on fieldwork objectives and processes.
Responsibilities:
The typical responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Direct and supervise divers in underwater investigations and excavations
- Conduct archaeological investigations and excavations in varying conditions and visibilities
- Identify shipwreck artifacts from the Colonial Period
- Routinely produce field reports
- Maintain on-site compliance with project procedures and regulatory standards
- Maintain familiarity with 1A-31 Florida Administrative Code
- Ensure proper documentation of artifacts in situ
Qualifications:
- Masters in Archaeology or related field required
- Evidence of field experience preferred; experience working on shipwreck sites a plus
- PADI Certification required, Nitrox certification a plus
- Experience with the conservation of waterlogged materials a plus
