Underwater Archaeologist (Contract Position)

Role:

This position acts as the lead field archaeologist directing a group of divers in underwater archaeological investigations. Fieldwork takes place in varying visibilities. This position has a direct report of the lead Project Manager and collaborates with Project Managers and the Project Archaeologist on fieldwork objectives and processes.

Responsibilities:

The typical responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and supervise divers in underwater investigations and excavations
  • Conduct archaeological investigations and excavations in varying conditions and visibilities
  • Identify shipwreck artifacts from the Colonial Period
  • Routinely produce field reports
  • Maintain on-site compliance with project procedures and regulatory standards
  • Maintain familiarity with 1A-31 Florida Administrative Code
  • Ensure proper documentation of artifacts in situ

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Archaeology or related field required
  • Evidence of field experience preferred; experience working on shipwreck sites a plus
  • PADI Certification required, Nitrox certification a plus
  • Experience with the conservation of waterlogged materials a plus
