Junior Professor Chair (« tenure track ») with consideration for eventual tenure in Preventive Marine Archaeology

https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/97343

Scientific theme: Archaeology of littoral societies

This Junior Chair aims to promote coastal archaeology at the scale of Brittany and at the international level, within the framework of local and international research and university networks.

Summary of the scientific projec
Thanks to an interdisciplinary approach, the scientific project aims to study past coastal societies on the scale of the last 10,000 years (from the Mesolithic to the contemporary period). It will also aim to understand the adaptability and resilience of coastal societies to past environmental and societal changes.
Finally, in a more global approach, this research will aim to understand the interactions between man and the environment. Thus, this chair will seek to boost synergies between the four Brest University institutes, IB-SHS, IB-Labstic, IB-Health and IUEM, in which units are already working in interdisciplinarity on these themes at the nature/society interface (LEMAR, LETG, GEO-OCEAN, CRBC, CERV, Génétique). More specifically, the project is intended to reinvest tools and methods from marine sciences and technologies,
which is an internationally recognized specialty of the Brest site, in the field of human-nature dynamics (sea and coastline). The project will be linked to training and pedagogical actions from the undergraduate to the doctoral level

Summary of the teaching project:
From an administrative point of view, this Junior Chair will be hosted at the IUEM (Plouzané), where there are 8 Master’s degrees and the Ecole doctorale des Sciences de la Mer et du Littoral in which the candidate will participate. For example, in the Master’s degree in Biology, he will teach about the
ancient exploitation of biological resources (through the study of shellfish clusters in particular) in relation to catching practices, consumption, etc. He will also be involved in the “Biological Archives” course, where calibration methods and applications of carbonate and siliceous marine proxies are studied, in particular through the use of archaeological shell material. Within the EGEL master’s degree, the issue of conservation and enhancement of archaeological heritage will be addressed from the point of view of
environmental diagnostics based on practical and theoretical experiences. In the STPE specialization, the question of paleoenvironments will be reconsidered in relation to the dynamics of anthropic occupations.
Within the framework of the IBSHS (Brest), he will contribute to the Master’s degree in Civilizations, Cultures and Societies, where he will explore the conditions and dynamics of adaptation of coastal societies to their environment. In the Department of Art History and Archaeology (P.-J. Hélias Center, Quimper), he will give introductory courses in archaeology (methods, cultures) to undergraduate students. These theoretical courses will be complemented by a field camp where students will be able to learn about
field practice and interdisciplinary approaches.

State Underwater Archaeologist: Alabama

The beautiful state of Alabama has 60 miles of shoreline along the Gulf Coast, 600 miles of tidal bay and bayou shoreline, over 3500 miles of lake shoreline, and over 132,000 miles of rivers and streams, all of which contribute to the maritime heritage of the state. Most of these waters have not yet been inventoried for submerged archaeological sites and shipwrecks.

Changes in weather patterns coupled with the widely publicized identification of the wreck of the Clotilda have significantly amplified the demand from the public in terms of both investigating new discoveries and responding with expertise to local, national, and international interest, in Alabama’s underwater archaeological sites.

The Alabama Historical Commission (AHC) is actively working on the development of a maritime archaeology program that will concentrate on the remarkable archaeological resources in Alabama’s waterways. The maritime program will be an extension of our current archaeological program that preserves, protects, and interprets archaeology on land. Surrounding states have already developed robust maritime archaeological programs led by a professional maritime state archaeologist and Alabama has fallen behind in that regard.

State legislation tasks the AHC with the responsibility of protecting, preserving, and educating the public about all archaeological sites and shipwrecks in Alabama waters. Currently, the AHC does not have a professional maritime archaeologist on staff, or the vehicles and equipment required for a successful maritime program. Both are needed to respond quickly to both the increasing demand for reviews of maritime archaeological reports and to properly investigate the growing number of reported discoveries of underwater cultural resources by the citizens of Alabama.

The AHC continues to further educate the public about historic sites in Alabama from both land and water and the AHC will push for this effort in the development of maritime archaeology for the state of Alabama.

2024 NOAA OE Funding

Dear Colleagues,

NOAA Ocean Exploration is pleased to announce its Ocean Exploration Fiscal Year 2024 Funding Opportunity. NOAA Ocean Exploration is dedicated to exploring the unknown ocean, unlocking its potential through scientific discovery, technological advancements, partnerships, and data delivery. By leading national efforts to fill gaps in basic understanding of the marine environment, we are providing critical ocean data, information, and awareness needed to strengthen the economy, health, and security of the United States and the world.

NOAA Ocean Exploration is soliciting proposals for ocean exploration-related projects under three themes. By supporting exploration, i.e., discovery through disciplined, diverse observations, NOAA Ocean Exploration seeks to advance our basic understanding of waters under U.S. jurisdiction. Projects under the ocean exploration and discovery and technology themes are restricted to waters under U.S. jurisdiction and should support national priorities such as those in the Strategic Priorities for Ocean Exploration and Characterization of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone developed per the National Strategy for Mapping, Exploring, and Characterizing the United States Exclusive Economic Zone. Projects under the maritime heritage theme are not restricted to waters under U.S. jurisdiction. All projects should support at least one of NOAA’s science and technology priorities of uncrewed systems, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, ’omics, data, and citizen science.

For Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) funding, NOAA Ocean Exploration is soliciting proposals focused on any one of the following three themes:

OCEAN EXPLORATION and DISCOVERY: Proposals should be in support of the NOAA Ocean Exploration mission to explore unknown or poorly known ocean areas, processes, and resources in waters deeper than 200 meters. Thus, NOAA Ocean Exploration is particularly interested in exploration of physical, chemical, and biological environments and processes within the oceanic water column in these deep waters. However, proposals for projects in shallower waters will be considered if they focus on exploration of tropical mesophotic environments. All proposals should be for work within waters under U.S. jurisdiction and describe how the work will address the thematic and geographic priorities for ocean exploration in the Strategic Priorities for Ocean Exploration and Characterization of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone.

TECHNOLOGY: Proposals should feature application of new or novel use of existing ocean technologies or innovative methods that could increase the scope and efficiency of acquiring ocean exploration data and expanding its availability and use. NOAA Ocean Exploration is particularly interested in proposals for technologies that are platform agnostic (work across multiple platforms) and/or address novel methods (for example machine learning and artificial intelligence) to analyze existing publicly accessible large datasets. Proposed ocean technologies must be applicable to water depths of 200 meters or greater, preferably full-ocean depth (testing in shallower water or lab-based testing is acceptable), address at least one of the defined ocean exploration variables as referenced in the “Exploration Variables Identified by NOAA Ocean Exploration” technical memorandum, and describe how the work will address the thematic and geographic priorities for ocean exploration in the Strategic Priorities for Ocean Exploration and Characterization of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone.

MARITIME HERITAGE: Proposals should address exploration and discovery of significant maritime heritage resources that improve archaeological knowledge and inform decisions concerning preservation, management, and potential seafloor use. Maritime heritage projects can be conducted in any water depth, can focus on prehistoric and historic-period subjects, and are not restricted to waters under U.S. jurisdiction. Data products must benefit other academic and resource management disciplines. NOAA Ocean Exploration is particularly interested in proposals that include the use of innovative and advanced technology and methodology.

The deadline for the pre-proposals, which are required, is May 30, 2023, at 4:59 p.m. EDT. Full proposals are due by October 5, 2023.

The notice of funding opportunity was published on April 10, 2023, and is available on the NOAA Ocean Exploration website and Grants.gov.

A webinar about the funding opportunity will be held on April 20, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Registration is open. A recording of the webinar will be made available on the https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/about/funding-opps/welcome.html. Additional questions may be directed to oer.nofo2024@noaa.gov.

Please share widely with your networks. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION: What is a Sanctuary Advisory Council?

ANSWER: National marine sanctuary advisory councils are community-based, volunteer advisory groups established to provide advice and recommendations to NOAA on issues including management, science, service, and stewardship. This sanctuary advisory council brings members of a diverse community together to provide advice to NOAA, to serve as a liaison with the nominating community, and to assist in guiding the site through the designation process.

QUESTION: How long do sanctuary advisory council members serve?

ANSWER: Applicants chosen as members or alternates should expect to serve two or three-year terms based on the seat (seats are staggered to avoid having to recruit a full slate of new members). Members are limited to three consecutive terms on the council in the same seat, unless the ONMS Director has granted a waiver.

QUESTION: How do I apply for a seat on the sanctuary advisory council?

ANSWER: Interested parties should submit written statements of particular interest, qualifications, and experience related to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Sanctuary advisory council members must be at least 18 years of age, with the exception of youth seat members.

QUESTION: How do I know if I am eligible to apply for a specific seat?

ANSWER: The seat descriptions are included in the document linked above.

QUESTION: How are applicants for the sanctuary advisory council chosen?

ANSWER: Applicants are chosen based upon their particular expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying; community and professional affiliations; and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources. NOAA seeks to maintain a Sanctuary Advisory Council that is balanced in terms of points of view represented, geographic diversity, and advisory functions the council will perform. NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries director makes the final selection for seats.

BOEM proposes to require lessees and operators to submit an archaeological report with any oil and gas exploration or development plan they submit to BOEM for approval of activities proposed on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). An archaeological report is currently required only if the plan covers an area that a BOEM Regional Director has reason to believe may contain an archaeological resource. This proposed rule would increase the likelihood that archaeological resources are located and identified before they are inadvertently damaged by an OCS operator, thereby assuring compliance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). This proposed rule would define the minimum level of survey information necessary to support the conclusions in the archaeological report, the procedure for reporting possible archaeological resources, the procedure for continuing operations when a possible resource is present, and what to do if an unanticipated archaeological resource is discovered during operation.

Your comments on the substance of this rulemaking must be received by BOEM on or before April 17, 2023. BOEM may not consider comments received after this date. Your comments on the information collection (IC) burden in this rulemaking must be received by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and BOEM on or before March 17, 2023. The IC deadline does not affect the deadline for public comments on the substance of the proposed regulations.

PostDoc Researcher: DPAA and the University of Delaware

https://jobs.chronicle.com/job/37424186/postdoctoral-researcher

The University of Delaware (UD) School of Marine Science and Policy invites applications specializing in remotely sensed underwater spatial data analysis for a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellowship. PWA50 Maritime Heritage Public Engagement Paid Internship x 3

Location: Belper, Derbyshire

Full or part time: 3 x 20 day placements

Salary: £10.50 per hour

Are you looking for a paid training placement in maritime archaeology and public engagement? Then we would like to hear from you. We are offering three 20-day internships this summer to give those studying in relevant disciplines the opportunity to experience working in the heritage sector as part of a paid internship.

MSDS Marine have been commissioned by Historic England to undertake a project to engage non-traditional audiences with protected wreck sites and wider maritime heritage; through the delivery of fifty pop up outreach events.

Traditionally maritime archaeology outreach has focused on areas that are closest to the sea, and to the wrecks themselves. Many UK counties are landlocked with two frequently claiming to be furthest from the sea; Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands. There are many residents of these counties who do not have the opportunity to visit the coast and to engage with maritime heritage, yet the areas have strong links to the sea and maritime history that are little known.

To aid the delivery of events we are seeking to recruit three 20-day internship placements during summer 2023. The exact dates of placements remain to be confirmed, and can be agreed with the successful applicants in due course, but it is anticipated that they will run between June and September and will involve weekend working.

You will be a student or recent graduate with a passion for marine heritage and sharing your knowledge with the public.  We are looking for someone who would welcome the opportunity to work with MSDS Marine to help develop their career and knowledge.

The role will require you to undertake a range of activities, primarily relating to the PWA50 pop up events. You will be supported in creating marketing materials, social media posts, and help plan and deliver events alongside the wider MSDS Marine team.

The roles require excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as some understanding of protected wreck sites in England (but don’t worry we can teach you this!).
