Location: Belper, Derbyshire
Full or part time: 3 x 20 day placements
Salary: £10.50 per hour
Are you looking for a paid training placement in maritime archaeology and public engagement? Then we would like to hear from you. We are offering three 20-day internships this summer to give those studying in relevant disciplines the opportunity to experience working in the heritage sector as part of a paid internship.
MSDS Marine have been commissioned by Historic England to undertake a project to engage non-traditional audiences with protected wreck sites and wider maritime heritage; through the delivery of fifty pop up outreach events.
Traditionally maritime archaeology outreach has focused on areas that are closest to the sea, and to the wrecks themselves. Many UK counties are landlocked with two frequently claiming to be furthest from the sea; Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands. There are many residents of these counties who do not have the opportunity to visit the coast and to engage with maritime heritage, yet the areas have strong links to the sea and maritime history that are little known.
To aid the delivery of events we are seeking to recruit three 20-day internship placements during summer 2023. The exact dates of placements remain to be confirmed, and can be agreed with the successful applicants in due course, but it is anticipated that they will run between June and September and will involve weekend working.
You will be a student or recent graduate with a passion for marine heritage and sharing your knowledge with the public. We are looking for someone who would welcome the opportunity to work with MSDS Marine to help develop their career and knowledge.
The role will require you to undertake a range of activities, primarily relating to the PWA50 pop up events. You will be supported in creating marketing materials, social media posts, and help plan and deliver events alongside the wider MSDS Marine team.
The roles require excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as some understanding of protected wreck sites in England (but don’t worry we can teach you this!).
