This position is part of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. As a Historian, you will serve under the direction of the Secretary of Defense and the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)), and pursuant to the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, and the Life Sciences Equipment Laboratory were combined in January 2015, into a single defense agency, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPA)). DPAA is responsible for the accounting of missing person (including locating, recovering and identifying missions persons or their remains after hostilities have ceased). The Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (OSD(P)) is the principal policy and planning advisor and assistant to the Secretary of Defense for all matters that support America’s national security objectives. The Director, DPAA, reports to the USD(P).
The incumbent for this position will set, convey, and enforce standards and procedures for research and case development. Will coordinate the tasking and monitoring of the work of other researchers to ensure all casework conforms to Agency requirements, shepherding all cases through the entire development process, and serving as the subject matter expert and point of contact for area of research. The incumbent must utilize appropriate project management techniques to plan, coordinate, develop, and execute major historical research projects that involve multiple individuals.
Incumbent will be the historical advisor and professional consultant for DPAA conducting historical studies; obtaining, collecting, analyzing, exploiting, and integrating all available historical evidence and information; interpreting military history in the context of U.S. military and civilian personnel; establishing historical facts based upon research conducted; and grouping historical facts along with determining interrelationships to search, recover, and identify unaccounted-for persons from past conflicts. The incumbent will perform complex historical research into casualty resolution and unidentified remains interred in U.S. and foreign cemeteries, and will analyze diverse information gained through research, field investigations, and laboratory analysis, and will recommend courses of action for individual disinterment cases.

The Department of History invites applications from experienced maritime archaeologists for a non-faculty EHRA position in its Program in Maritime Studies, a distinguished graduate program offering the MA in nautical archaeology and maritime history. The position is for a one year term from the date of hire.
The holder of the position will be responsible for field project planning and supervision, equipment maintenance and organization, and Program field project logistical support. Assistant Staff Maritime Archaeologist will report to the Program Director and Staff Maritime Archaeologist. Specific field support duties related to two annual maritime studies field schools plus grant-funded projects will include student supervision and diving safety procedure; vehicle operation; boat launch, retrieval, operation and logistics; use of remote sensing apparatus (magnetometer, side scan, ROV, and supporting software including Hypack and ArcView); equipment set-up and student equipment training; diving logistics and site safety engineering; small engine and electronic equipment repair and service; vehicle maintenance; and equipment inventory organization and storage.

NIAS invites applications in the research project on coastal geomorphology and maritime archaeology. This project has a distinctive inter-disciplinary orientation, and is being funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The field school begins with terrestrial excavations investigating late Pleistocene to early Holocene human activities, and continues to submerged locations in the area. The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA), category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, in Zadar, is organizing Advanced Underwater Archaeology Course. The course will take place in the Zadar area, from 28th May to 2nd June 2018.
The course will consist of theoretical and practical (hands on) instruction in techniques of underwater archaeological excavation, recording, data processing and the use of new technologies in underwater documentation. Archaeologists from the ICUA and guest lecturers will conduct theoretical lessons. Practical instruction will take place in the context of underwater archaeological surveys of ancient shipwrecks in the area surrounding Zadar and will teach participants what it means to be part of an underwater archaeological excavation team.
The course is aimed at archaeologists who have diving experience and at least some basic experience of practical underwater archaeology. It is designed to provide participants with advanced skills and training in underwater archaeology and basic project planning.
