Nautical Archaeology Society Field School

Expanding its reputation as the leader in Nautical Archaeology education in the Great Lakes, Northwestern Michigan College will host a Nautical Archaeology Society 2015 International Field School.

This two week event will be held on the main campus between July 12th and July 26th. . It will consist of taught courses and the supervised archaeological survey of a historic shipwreck in Northport, Grand Traverse Bay and an early Archaic site on the shore of an inland lake. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in underwater archaeology to train with NAS instructors and students from around the world.

Week one consists of an introduction to foreshore and underwater archaeology and the supervised survey of either a dry-land or underwater archaeological site. The second week consists of a series of day-long specialty courses covering topics such as: archaeological surveying, artifact typology, ship and boat construction, flint knapping, Native American settlement in northwest Michigan, documentary research, underwater archaeological surveying and archaeological illustration. These courses are open to anyone interested and no previous experience is necessary.

Naval History Fellowships, Grants, and Scholarships

The Naval History and Heritage Command, Department of the Navy, is offering the following competitive incentives to pursue original work in the history of the United States Navy for the academic year 2015-2016.

The Rear Admiral John D. Hayes Pre-doctoral Fellowship in U. S. Naval History.
The fellowship includes a stipend of $10,000 for the fellowship year (September 2015- June 2016) plus a travel grant for travel twice to the command’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, not on active duty in the armed forces; be enrolled in a recognized graduate school; have completed requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation by June 30, 2015; and have an approved dissertation topic in the field of U.S. naval history.

The grant of up to $2,500 is intended to assist a graduate student in the research and writing of U.S. naval history in fulfillment of the requirements of a master’s or doctoral degree by helping to defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and document duplication related to the research process for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation. Applicants must be citizens of the United States enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program in history or a closely related field in a recognized graduate school.

The Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper Research Grant.
The grant of up to $2,500 is intended to assist a scholar in the research or writing of a book or article by helping to defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and document duplication, related to the research process. Proposals that have high promise of filling gaps in the literature of U.S. naval history that the Naval History and Heritage Command has identified as of higher interest are eligible for consideration. The command’s list of priority subjects in U.S. naval history is posted on the command’s website, http://www.history.navy.mil, and is regularly updated. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and hold a Ph.D. degree from an accredited university, awarded no later than March 31, 2015, or equivalent attainment as a published author.

The Samuel Eliot Morison Naval History Scholarship.
The scholarship provides a $5,000 cash award to one active duty commissioned officer of the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps with demonstrated leadership potential and high academic qualifications who is already pursuing graduate study in history, international relations, or a related field. The award is to help pay for expenses related to research, travel, and the purchase of books or other educational materials.

1) Museum Specialist, Submarine Force Museum, closes 9 February

This position is located in the Submarine Force Museum, as an official Department of the Navy Museum under the responsibility of the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC).  The Submarine Force Museum’s mission is to select, collect, preserve, and interpret an historical collection that educates an international audience about the history of the United States Submarine Force from inception in 1900 to the present.

Youth Diving With a Purpose Scholarship Underwater Archaeology Program

In 2015 Youth Diving With a Purpose (YDWP) underwater archaeology program will conduct its third training session from Saturday, July 17 through Sunday, July 25 2015. YDWP III will be a rewarding experience for the youth participants.

Upon completion of the course, each participant willhave achieved the basic requirements for underwater archaeology and receive a YDWP certificate and a PADI certification card verifying your accomplishment.

Two scholarships will be awarded to eligible participants that complete the scholarship requirements. These scholarships are
dedicated to the memory of the late Charles R. Anderson, the younger brother of YDWP Lead Instructor Kamau Sadiki.
Charles was a dedicated student of zoology, both terrestrial and marine life. His fascinations of biology at an early age
lead him to study zoology at Howard University. He worked in animal research at the National Institute of Health until
his early death in 2002.

The Charles R. Anderson YDWP Scholarship will cover all expenses associated with YDWP III. This includes
registration fee, airfare, transportation, housing and meals. Two Charles R. Anderson YDWP scholarships will be
awarded to eligible applicants as determined by the DWP Executive Board.

These scholarships are for new YDWP applicants only. Returning YDWP’ers are not eligible to apply.

Underwater Archeologist (Archaeologist II) Position

The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II).  The position is full-time with benefits and will work out of our field office in Charleston, South Carolina.  The position is open until 31 January 2015.  We hope to offer the position by the end of February with a start date by April or May 2015.  The successful candidate will complete a team of four members and complement our efforts to study and preserve the maritime archaeological legacy in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina.

Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II):

The employee will direct and coordinate public outreach and educational offerings by the MRD.  The position also supervises the Hobby Diver License program through oversight of license and report processing, site and collection assessments, and other aspects of the program.  In addition to these primary duties, the underwater archaeologist participates in research projects and will act in the capacity of principal/co-principal investigator as appropriate and present findings through various professional and public avenues.  The employee will seek funding and grant opportunities to support MRD activities and objectives.  The employee will oversee all components of the Charleston field office including oversight of finances, office and field equipment, two boats, and one vehicle.  The position is supervisory—managing one employee.  This position requires periodic travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings, including working on weekends as needed.  The incumbent reports directly to the state underwater archaeologist.  The successful candidate will also meet SCIAA’s Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements.
