Underwater Archeologist (Archaeologist II) Position
The Maritime Research Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, Columbia is seeking an Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II). The position is full-time with benefits and will work out of our field office in Charleston, South Carolina. The position is open until 31 January 2015. We hope to offer the position by the end of February with a start date by April or May 2015. The successful candidate will complete a team of four members and complement our efforts to study and preserve the maritime archaeological legacy in the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina.
Underwater Archaeologist (Archaeologist II):
The employee will direct and coordinate public outreach and educational offerings by the MRD. The position also supervises the Hobby Diver License program through oversight of license and report processing, site and collection assessments, and other aspects of the program. In addition to these primary duties, the underwater archaeologist participates in research projects and will act in the capacity of principal/co-principal investigator as appropriate and present findings through various professional and public avenues. The employee will seek funding and grant opportunities to support MRD activities and objectives. The employee will oversee all components of the Charleston field office including oversight of finances, office and field equipment, two boats, and one vehicle. The position is supervisory—managing one employee. This position requires periodic travel for fieldwork, presentations, and meetings, including working on weekends as needed. The incumbent reports directly to the state underwater archaeologist. The successful candidate will also meet SCIAA’s Dive Safety & Control Board scientific diving requirements.
