The blue economy includes all economic activities of ocean-based industries, together with the assets, goods, and ecosystem services provided by marine environments. Campus priorities include coastal landform and community resilience, ocean exploration, marine transportation, Power-at-Sea, and seafood production.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

Research

  • Under general supervision, is responsible for conducting research into their field of expertise.
  • Utilizes knowledge and skills granted to them by their education and expertise to complete research projects in their field of expertise.
  • Assists with the preparation and cleaning of worksite.
  • Analyzes research data and summarizes results.
  • Writes and may contribute to research papers, articles, and publications.

Mentoring

Presentations

  • Prepares presentation materials on research topics that may be presented to small and/or large groups.

Additional Information:

Each postdoctoral fellow will be paired with a TAMUG faculty member who has agreed to serve as a sponsor*.

Fellowships will provide 100% salary support for 1 year (to end no later than 31 August 2027), with potential for a one-time 1-year renewal (end date no later than 31 August 2028) upon recommendation of the faculty advisor (total of 24 months). Each fellow will receive a competitive compensation package, which will include a stipend (up to $5,000 per year) to cover research experiences. Starting salary for the post-docs will be $62,500 per year with applicable university benefits. Applications will only be reviewed once all materials are received in a single pdf document.

Successful applicants are likely to communicate early with TAMUG researchers their intent to apply for this program to allow time for successful proposal development. TAMUG faculty may only sponsor one applicant and provide evidence they can support the proposed research in their support letter. *A PhD candidate is a student in their last semester who will complete all graduation requirements prior to starting the fellowship. If the degree has not been conferred at the time of application, a letter from their school’s Graduate and/or Registrar’s Office certifying that all requirements for the degree have been met must be included with the application package.

Honor Frost Foundation Maritime and Underwater Archaeology Scholarships

Please note that ALL scholarship applications are due annually on March 31st (except CMAUCH applications).

Support for developing education at Masters, Doctoral and Post Doctoral levels is offered by the Foundation in conjunction with a variety of international academic institutions (see below) to students and scholars from the region (Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt).

The Foundation also offers a PhD scholarship to enable students from the region to undertake doctoral research in maritime archaeology at a university of their choice.

Successful candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon completion of their studies.

To apply, each applicant must: be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or a citizen of a U.S. territory (as defined by 16 U.S.C. 6602(9)); pursue or intend to pursue a masters or doctoral level degree in oceanography, maritime archaeology or marine biology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas (or related areas), at a U.S. accredited graduate institution; have and maintain a minimum cumulative and term grade point average of 3.30 or higher*; and maintain full-time student status, as defined by the university that the scholar is attending, for the duration of the scholarship award. *Scholars must maintain a minimum cumulative and term GPA of 3.30 for every term and for the duration of their award. If an applicant does not maintain this GPA, they will be placed on probation for one term following the term in which the 3.3 GPA was not maintained. If the GPA is not brought up within the probationary term, the recipient’s scholarship may be terminated. In addition, satisfactory progress must be made toward the completion of a thesis or dissertation. If it is determined that the scholar will not complete their thesis or dissertation prior to the end of the award, funding may be withdrawn. Individuals who already receive NOAA or federal funding from grants or scholarships for graduate school are not eligible to receive the Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship. If a student is willing to turn down the other federal funding, then they are eligible to receive the award. Universities or other organizations may not apply on behalf of an individual. Prospective scholars do not need to be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application, but must be admitted to a graduate-level program in order to be awarded this scholarship. Eligibility must be maintained for each succeeding year of support, and annual reporting requirements, to be specified at a later date, will apply. Individuals who are in their last year of graduate school are unlikely to receive this award.

The Honor Frost Foundation Diploma Scholarship 2024/2025

The Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage (CMAUCH) is pleased to announce the Honor Frost Foundation Scholarship for the Diploma Program in Maritime Archaeology at the CMAUCH for the academic year 2024/2025.

The scholarship covers tuition fees and a stipend per year.

It aims to encouraging serious and deserving students to peruse graduate studies in the field of Maritime Archaeology at the CMAUCH.

Are you looking for a challenging position in a dynamic setting? The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) currently has a vacant PhD position as part of the Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities project led by principal investigator Mikki Stelder, Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies and Laura Cull Ó Maoilearca, Professor of Performance Philosophy. ASCA is one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR).

The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis invites applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position at the intersection of Critical Ocean Studies, Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Anticolonial studies. The position is funded by a starting grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands led by Dr Mikki Stelder, of which the PhD position is a part.

The PhD fellow will be part of ASCA, one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR) and the Global Arts, Culture and Politics Department. ASCA is a research community devoted to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of culture (in all its forms and expressions) from a broad humanities perspective. ASCA is home to more than 120 scholars and 160 PhD candidates, and is a world-leading international research school in Cultural Analysis. ASCA members share a commitment to working in an interdisciplinary framework and to maintaining a close connection with contemporary cultural and political debates.

Candidates can work on a project of their own choosing within the scope of Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities that foregrounds and augments critical perspectives from the Global South (including the South within the North) and are encouraged to think creatively in terms of research design and methodologies. You will design your own independent research project and will be part of a dynamic research environment where you are able to attend and create research groups and participate in a lively ASCA community of interdisciplinary scholarship.

What are you going to do?

You will be working on an independent research project of your own design that examines questions around oceanic imaginaries and oceanic solidarities that foreground and augment critical and creative perspectives from the Global South (including the South within the North). You are expected to have a strong interest in critical theoretical lineages of Indigenous Studies, Black Studies, Caribbean Philosophy, Pacific Studies, Archipelagic and/or Anticolonial Studies as they intersect with thinking about the ocean. You should display an awareness around the limitations of Anthropocene and critical ocean studies discourses that fail to examine the role of imperialism and colonialism and a keen understanding of your relation to your own research.

During the PhD, you will develop your own guided independent study of the fields critical to your project. Furthermore, you are invited to show creativity in research design and methodology beyond conventional academic methods and writing. Your supervisors will guide you through the process of becoming a more independent researcher. You will also co-design a research group on Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities and have the opportunity to design a symposium.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Submission of a PhD thesis within a four-year period;
  • Shaping and participating in an Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities research group;
  • Publishing one single-authored, peer reviewed article;
  • Presenting intermediate research results at workshops and conferences, including outside of the Netherlands;
  • Organising knowledge dissemination activities: in collaboration with the Oceanic Imaginaries, Oceanic Solidarities research group;
  • Participating in the Research Schooland Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes;
  • The opportunity to co-teach at the BA level in the second or third year of the appointment (max. 0,2fte per year).

Your experience and profile

Candidates need to have the following qualifications:

  • a completed Master’s degree in cultural studies, literary and cultural analysis, gender studies, media studies, artistic research, philosophy, black studies, indigenous studies, or related disciplines. You may apply if you have not yet completed your Master’s degree only if you provide a signed letter from your supervisor stating that you will graduate before 01 September 2024;
  • excellent research skills demonstrated by an outstanding Master’s thesis and a demonstrable capacity to develop a track record of publishing in high-ranking journals and/or with leading presses or professional arts venues;
  • a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research;
  • enthusiasm for communicating academic research to non-academic audiences;
  • experience with the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • good command of the English language.

Please note that if you already hold a doctorate/PhD or are working towards obtaining a similar degree elsewhere, you will not be admitted to a doctoral programme at the UvA.

What can we offer you?

We offer a temporary employment contract for the period of 48 months. The first contract will be for 16 months, with an extension for the following 32 months, contingent on a positive performance evaluation within the first 12 months. The employment contract is for 38 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024 or as soon thereafter.

Your salary is in the first year of the employment contract € 2,770 up and in the last year a maximum of € 3,539 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Australian Maritime Archaeological Conservation Scholarship

This scholarship, worth $15,500 per year, is a top-up scholarship for a graduate research student to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), in the field of Australian Maritime Archaeological Conservation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • meet the entry requirements for a Faculty of Arts PhD and have applied to complete a PhD in the field of Australian Maritime Archaelological Conservation
  • have achieved a minimum weighted average mark of 75% in the final year subjects, or University of Melbourne equivalent, with a minimum result of 75% for the research component
  • have not already completed a research qualification at the equivalent level as the course for which a scholarship is sought

Selection criteria

Eligible applicants are automatically considered through their PhD application to complete a PhD in the field of Australian Maritime Archaelogoical Conservation, then scored and ranked according to:

  • their academic achievement in completed tertiary degrees
  • their PhD research proposal

To promote a better understanding of the environment we so love to explore, the Central Ca1ifornia Council of Diving Clubs, known as Cen Cal, is offering our annual California Diving & Aquatic Studies Scholarship. This award was previously named the Seaviews/Cen Cal Marine Science Scholarship.

The award of $2,000 is to support a student engaging in studies of underwater habitats. Aquatic related programs in the disciplines of biology, physical sciences, marine education, maritime archaeology, historical and social aspects of marine resources or the science of diving are relevant for consideration.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture invites applications for bursaries from institutions accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training for students who wish to pursue studies in heritage related programmes.

Eligibility

  • South African citizenship;
  • Letter of provisional acceptance / letter of admission from the institution;
  • Not older than forty (40) years;
  • Outstanding / satisfactory academic performance (academic progress report if already at an institution) or (Grade 12 if you are a 1st year student);
  • Field of study (heritage related)
  • Not employed full time by government, state agencies or private sector with a salary of more than R350 000.
  • Students who are beneficiaries of other bursaries or donors for the 2024 academic year will only be considered if tuition fee at the said university or institution exceeds the DSAC’s threshold by at least 10% upwards.  

2024 National Maritime Award

As part of the 2023−24 Florida History Day program, the National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) is sponsoring a scholarship for a junior-division and a senior-division entry that explores a maritime history topic. Criteria for these prizes are presented below. Recipients will be announced during the Florida History Day Awards Ceremony. For additional information about the Society, go to www.seahistory.org.

Prizes for 1st Place (ONE each for junior and senior divisions) include a $100 cash prize (divided equally for group projects), a one-year membership in NMHS which includes Sea History magazine, recognition on the NMHS website,  and a certificate of achievement.  The mentoring teacher will receive a one-year membership in NMHS and recognition on the NMHS website. 

Prizes for 2nd Place (ONE each for junior and senior divisions) include a $50 cash prize (divided equally for group projects), one-year membership in NMHS which includes Sea History magazine, recognition on the NMHS website, and a certificate of achievement.  The mentoring teacher will receive a one-year membership in NMHS and recognition on the NMHS website. 

Individual or group entries in any NHD category may apply for the NMHS scholarships if they meet the following criteria.

  • The entry is advancing to the Florida History Day state contest.
  • The entry meets National History Day Contest Rule Book guidelines for all categories.
  • The project represents scholarly and historically accurate research.
  • The project topic relates to maritime history and to the NHD annual theme. The topic can relate to a person, event, or idea associated with maritime history such as underwater archaeology, ships, ship construction, artifacts, navigation, seafaring, naval operations, or maritime customs.

The deadline for applications is March 27, 2024. Entries will be evaluated by a three-person judging team. A scholarship awarded to a group entry will be divided equally among the participating students. Applying for a National Maritime Historical Society scholarship does not prohibit a student(s) from nominating an entry for other Florida History Day special prizes.
