DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an intern at the Erie Maritime Museum, you will have the opportunity to engage in traditional museum education experiences as well as assist the Museum Educator with the management of the museum’s 150 volunteer complement. Specific functions include:

  • Leading and training others on interpretive tours of the museum
  • Preparing and delivering training on the use of interpretive props to aid in museum interpretive programming
  • Planning, developing, and implementing written curriculum and activities for both on-site and outreach museum programming
  • Preparing and distributing marketing materials for EMM’s education programming and exhibits
  • Writing and revising interpretive text panels and social media posts
  • Assisting with scheduling, training, and managing volunteer documents
  • Gaining exposure to other museum functions such as retail sales, tickets, curatorial, and archival research

The collections and curatorial associate is responsible for managing and caring for SBMM’s collection in accordance with AAM best practices. Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Collections Assistant

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum explores and preserves the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and makes this resource accessible to all. As an educational institution, staff carry out CBMM’s mission, goals, and vision, working individually and collaboratively to encourage the public’s access to our collections, programs, and resources. Serving more than 85,000 guests each year, CBMM’s 18-acre campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats, multiple exhibition buildings, and changing special exhibitions, all set in a park-like waterfront setting along the Miles River and St. Michaels’ harbor.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Collections Assistant (CA) reports to the Assistant Curator and works with the curators to create and maintain CBMM’s collection records and carries out procedures ensuring the appropriate care, preservation, transportation, display, and access to collections, in storage and on exhibition. The CA supports the work of the exhibitions and collections team. In this dynamic work environment, the CA will provide critical support for long-term, interpretive projects, and help to set the tone and vision for CBMM’s future as well as have opportunities for professional growth as departmental and institutional needs evolve.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creating and maintaining CBMM’s collections records at professionally acceptable standards under the supervision and training of senior curatorial staff. Responsibilities include maintaining collections records, creating Deeds of Gift, cataloging, drafting finding aids, documenting loans in and loans out, recording condition of objects, and performing inventories.
  • Performing regular monitoring of environmental conditions and safeguarding collections against agents of deterioration, theft, mishandling, and other threats. Providing basic housekeeping for collections storage, exhibition and processing spaces.

Qualifications

The NC HISTORIC SITES is seeking an Historic Interpreter III to research and create new fee-based Maritime History and modern-day educational programs for Roanoke Island Festival Park. The Education Section of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is in search of a well-qualified, energetic, and responsible student to fill the role of Education Intern for the Summer of 2025. The intern will assist instructors with our annual Summer Science School classes to teach children in grades 1-4 about fishing, pirates, and model boats. The intern will also assist with outreach programs for youth organizations, community events, and field trip programs guided by full-time education section staff. Additional opportunities may exist for helping with work at the Bonehenge Whale Center in Beaufort.

This is a great opportunity for students pursuing a degree in various programs, including education, history, marine science, biology, museum studies, natural sciences, and cultural resources. The ideal candidate does not need to be enrolled in one of these specific programs, an interest in our museum and a desire to teach elementary age children and general audiences in informal settings is more important!

Expectations 

  • The intern must be over the age of 16 and project a good image for program participants and museum guests.
  • They should maintain a neat appearance and friendly, mature demeanor.
  • It is preferred that the intern is certified in first aid and CPR, knows how to swim, and is comfortable working outdoors.
  • Interns will need to comply with the dress code requested of class participants (i.e., closed-toe shoes, field clothes, etc.) while at work, program sites, in museum facilities, and in or near water. Presentable attire for a public museum setting is required.
  • Interns must provide their own personal materials, field clothing, appropriate footwear, water bottle, etc.
  • Interns are responsible for providing their own means of transportation to and from work.

Schedule

Length of Internship: 8 weeks, June 17, 2025 – August 8, 2025.

Work Schedule: Part time, Monday – Friday, typically 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., days and hours will vary depending on workload, averaging 20 hours per week.
