The Intrepid Museum seeks a highly skilled, detail oriented and motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Collections Specialist. This person will report to the Senior Archivist, and work closely with the Director of Collections and larger Exhibitions Department to ensure the thoughtful care and preservation of the Intrepid Museum’s collections. The Collections Specialist will support all aspects of the Museum’s collecting activities, with special focus on the artifact collection. Major responsibilities include processing and cataloging new acquisitions, documentary photography of artifacts, scanning photographs and other media, rehousing artifacts, inventorying and maintaining item’s storage location, and assisting with exhibit install and artifact display. The Collections Specialist will also take an active role in other departmental projects and activities as assigned.

Salary Range:$52,000.00 – $55,000.00


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with day-to-day collections tasks including, but not limited to: documenting, cataloging and inventorying artifact collections, physically handling and rehousing objects according to preservation standards, database entry, maintaining proper collections storage environment.
  • Maintain clear, consistent documentation of artifacts in the collection.
  • Participate in photography, scanning and digitization of artifacts and photographs.
  • Create detailed and descriptive condition reports for artifacts and perform general preventative conservation care duties.
  • Enter detailed, appropriate, and accurate data into the Museum’s database, TMS, with particular emphasis on adding accessible information.
  • Review database records so that they can be shared with the public via eMuseum website.
  • Participate in monthly Collections Committee meetings; collaborate with other Museum departments and staff.
  • Participate in regular environmental and IPM monitoring.
  • Assist with reviewing artifact mounts and installing items for display.
  • Assist with creation and documentation of social media posts; comfortable with occasional public speaking.
  • Assist other departments with programs related to the collection, including education and membership.

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in History, Museum Studies, or a related field. Minimum 3 or more year’s collections management and/or museum registration experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products and collections management software (TMS preferred). Experience operating a DSLR camera and photographing objects is a plus. INTRODUCTION

This position is an Analyst in the Programs and Integration Division (PID), a division in the Deputy Under Secretary of the Navy for Management (DUSN (M)). DUSN(M) is a directorate reporting to the Under Secretary of the Navy. The primary purpose of this position is to collaborate closely with the Secretariat Historian, helping develop, supporting and augmenting a variety of processes, products, and services.

Major Duties

Institutional Memory 35%

  • Develops detailed plans, tasks, milestones and schedules to ensure efficient and timely sequencing for collecting Secretariat history source documents to develop annual Secretariat history summaries. Assists the Department of the Navy Secretariat Historian composing taskers to each political appointee’s office for annual history data call. Independently enter tasker(s) into the Enterprise Task Management Software Solution (ETMS2), resolving questions (when appropriate), reviewing packages for completeness, tracking deadlines, devising and maintaining a catalog of in-house reference files.
  • Collaborates with the Directives and Records Management Division (DRMD), Secretariat Historian and the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) to retain, file, and/or archive elsewhere in compliance with DRMD and requirements, but also to meet the research needs of the Secretariat.

Art and Artifact Support 35%

  • Supports art and artifact acquisition, borrowing, and accountability, and responsible presentation in political appointees’ offices. Supports managing E-ring display cases and other special exhibits as required. Works closely with Secretariat Historian negotiating and instituting loans for special exhibits; collaborates and coordinates with DUSN (M) publications branch and Secretariat Historian (and/or other experts) to help all parties keep moving methodically toward completion of exhibit(s).
  • Develops improved system and/or database to catalog art and artifacts and organize history information for labels, tours, and publications.
  • Secretariat Historian Outreach 30%
  • Collaborates with Secretariat Historian instituting new history-related events, strategic communications surrounding events, coordinating with speakers, PID Events Team, PFPA, NHHC/NMMC, as appropriate. Promotes the missions and values of military history commands, museums, and historical preservation work to encourage documenting today’s history. Develops business and financing plans/POAMs, and folders with strategic communications for future events.
  • Collaborates and assists history commands and museums to build a publicly available Secretariat history website featuring artifacts on loan.
  • Provides history tours in absence and/or supports Secretariat Historian tours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required by the Position

  • Ability to communicate extremely well in extemporaneous conversation and in writing.
  • Experience working in complex bureaucracies with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and implementing complicated and detailed plans for long range projects that demand coordinating inputs from multiple collaborators.
  • Knowledgeable and driven to remain up to date on features of MSO suite and other software. This will be vital for program management and information management responsibilities.

Supervisory Controls – The supervisor assigns specific projects in terms of issues, organizations, functions, or work processes to be studied and sets deadlines for completing the work. Where two or more projects are involved, the supervisor may assign priorities among the various projects as well as deadlines for the attainment of specific milestones within a project. The supervisor or higher-grade analyst provides assistance on controversial issues or on the application of qualitative or quantitative analytical methods to the study of subjects for which precedent studies are not available. Work is reviewed for conformance with overall requirements as well as contribution to the objectives of the study. Findings and recommendations developed by the employee are reviewed prior to release, publication, or discussion with management officials.

  • Incumbent exercises fully delegated authority for history events management; exercises partial and collaborative authority for artifact accountability and institutional memory initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with Secretariat Historian to develop policies and procedures; once plans are developed, works independently with minimal supervision.

Factor 4- Complexity

  • The Secretariat Historian and their assistant/associate follow best practices of the museum community and working together, negotiating and implementing procedures meeting the needs of both museum professionals and tactfully meeting strategic communications needs of Secretariat leadership. Likewise, they negotiate and implement procedures for collecting historic documents that comply with DRMD, security, legal, regulations; but at the same time meet the minimum organizational memory needs of the Secretariat.
  • This incumbent gathers information, identifies and analyzes issues, and builds useful systems and structures for more effective retention and use of resources and more efficient use/mining of Secretariat information.

Scope and Effect

The purpose of this position is to help institute solutions to improve operations and solve problems in information management, art and artifact accountability, Secretariat history outreach, and strategic communications.

The collections and curatorial associate is responsible for managing and caring for SBMM’s collection in accordance with AAM best practices. RESPONSIBILITIES

Collections

Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Collections Assistant

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum explores and preserves the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and makes this resource accessible to all. As an educational institution, staff carry out CBMM’s mission, goals, and vision, working individually and collaboratively to encourage the public’s access to our collections, programs, and resources. POSITION SUMMARY

The Collections Assistant (CA) reports to the Assistant Curator and works with the curators to create and maintain CBMM’s collection records and carries out procedures ensuring the appropriate care, preservation, transportation, display, and access to collections, in storage and on exhibition. The CA supports the work of the exhibitions and collections team. In this dynamic work environment, the CA will provide critical support for long-term, interpretive projects, and help to set the tone and vision for CBMM’s future as well as have opportunities for professional growth as departmental and institutional needs evolve.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creating and maintaining CBMM’s collections records at professionally acceptable standards under the supervision and training of senior curatorial staff. Responsibilities include maintaining collections records, creating Deeds of Gift, cataloging, drafting finding aids, documenting loans in and loans out, recording condition of objects, and performing inventories.
  • Performing regular monitoring of environmental conditions and safeguarding collections against agents of deterioration, theft, mishandling, and other threats. Providing basic housekeeping for collections storage, exhibition and processing spaces.
  • Tracking exhibition objects and drafting loan agreements. Performing exhibition-related movement of objects, including packing, and condition reports. Assisting with installation and striking of exhibitions.

  • Digitizing materials from CBMM’s collection including objects, photographic prints, transparent media and oral histories, as well as large format materials such as ships plans, maps and charts.
  • Supporting collections and library volunteers and interns in coordination with senior curatorial staff.
  • Assuming such other duties as are necessary for the operation of the department or as assigned by senior curatorial staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, art history, anthropology or museum studies or a related discipline and/or museum training, internship or work experience preferred.
  • Proven word processing, database and/or spreadsheet skills are necessary.
  • Experience with collections management system software, training and experience in digitization techniques, and Microsoft Office knowledge preferred.

This position is a non-exempt full-time, hourly position of CBMM with an expected minimum work schedule of 40 hours per week and is eligible for 20% remote work. All staff members are expected to be available to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.

About the Role
The position Manager Maritime Archaeology is a senior leadership role within the Knowledge team responsible for managing and developing the museum’s maritime archaeology initiatives. 

Key responsibilities include planning and leading maritime archaeology projects, managing team members, procuring equipment and ensuring its safe operation, oversight of the museum’s research vessel, budgeting and project collaborations. The Manager provides expert advice on maritime archaeology and oversees the acquisition, research and interpretation of maritime archaeology collection items through exhibitions, digital and online programs. 

The position has a significant role in museum policy, including remaining abreast of relevant maritime archaeology legislation and Protection of Cultural Objects on Loan (PCOL) protocols.
This is a role with a high duty of care responsibility, including ensuring currency of all diving requirements and training of staff and volunteers undertaking fieldwork. A key element is research leadership, through practical projects such as interpretation and reconstruction of archaeologically excavated sites, and in scholarly publishing and presentations.

The position will work with the museum’s Digital and Communications teams to develop and maintain a dedicated and vibrant online resource that reflects and showcases the museum’s work in maritime archaeology.

Key Accountabilities
Under broad direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:

  • Manage the development of a national centre in maritime archaeology by furthering research activities that support and complement broader national maritime heritage efforts.
  • Plan and deliver maritime archaeology programs, including underwater surveys and collaborative research projects, both within and beyond Australian waters.
  • Research and publish accounts of maritime archaeology in scholarly, public and specialist forums.
  • Represent the Museum in public forums, media opportunities, conferences, and cultural networks.
  • Research and develop curatorial content for exhibitions and public programs, providing leadership and expert input on exhibition and program development and review. 
  • Actively seek external grants, funding and key donations and provide support to the ANMM Foundation fundraising activities.
  • Manage and mentor the maritime archaeologists, including direction of major projects such as reconstruction of an archaeologically excavated vessel and collaborative research programs.
  • Manage the budget and maintain diving and maritime archaeology equipment according to relevant safety standards and the museum’s maritime archaeology policy and procedures, including training and maintaining relevant qualifications.
  • Participate in the museum’s Acquisitions Committee, and in monitoring the museum’s obligations and processes including PCOL, the Collection Development Policy and relevant Maritime Archaeology legislation.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience as a project leader or principal investigator on maritime archaeology projects, including both underwater and terrestrial sites.
  2. Advanced Open Water Diving Qualifications along with Rescue Diver and Nitrox (EANx) endorsements, plus a recent (< 12 months) dive medical confirming capacity to undertake a regular program of scuba and/or surfacesupplied diving to depths up to 30 metres.
  3. Extensive knowledge of Australian maritime history and heritage, demonstrated via a wide range of published work in maritime archaeology. 
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of maritime archaeology legislation in regard to fieldwork, consultation, interpretation and object acquisition.
  5. High-level public engagement skills and experience in media, conferences, presentations and public speaking. 
  6. Successful track record in securing grants, consultancies or other external revenue streams to support maritime archaeology programs.

Qualifications and/or relevant experience required
Desirable:

  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain ADAS Part 2 qualification for surface-supplied breathing apparatus to 30m.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence and minimum coxswain grade 3 certificate in boat operation.
  • Experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or collections.
  • Relevant international experience, including working with cultures outside Western/English-speaking countries.
  • Familiarity with or ability to use archival record keeping systems such as ELO.
  • Experience with collection management database systems such as TMS.

The Texas Maritime Museum (TMM), located in Rockport, Texas, is seeking a qualified and dedicated Curator to oversee the stewardship, care, and interpretation of its maritime artifact collection. This full-time, salaried position plays a key role in the development and management of the museum’s exhibitions, research initiatives, and collections care strategies. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the Collections and Curation
  • Department, including allocations for supplies, staffing support, artifact care, and exhibit development.

The Education Section of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is in search of a well-qualified, energetic, and responsible student to fill the role of Education Intern for the Summer of 2025. The intern will assist instructors with our annual Summer Science School classes to teach children in grades 1-4 about fishing, pirates, and model boats. The intern will also assist with outreach programs for youth organizations, community events, and field trip programs guided by full-time education section staff. Expectations

  • It is preferred that the intern is certified in first aid and CPR, knows how to swim, and is comfortable working outdoors.

Conservation undertaken may include, as appropriate for material and condition of artifact, wet storage, x-radiography, concretion break down, desalination (immersion, electrolytic reduction), solution monitoring, materials identification, stabilization, consolidation, repair and restoration. Assist in and contribute to project data analysis. Contribute to and undertake artifact and conservation research and treatment development.
  • Field Work (Conservation): On site conservation – contribute to the recording, documentation and conservation of finds during field planning, recovery, and post-recovery processing – insuring proper inventory, field storage, and transportation of artifacts between site and storage and conservation facility. Participate in and contribute expertise to conservation of artifacts at site. Following completion of fieldwork at the site time for field work function will be transferred to Artifact Conservation function.
  • Public Education and Outreach: Participate in public outreach activities such as laboratory tours, public presentations, media interviews, show and tell events at other venues. Prepare articles and papers for publication and professional conferences. Supervise and train temporary employees, interns and volunteers. 
  • Laboratory Management and Administration: Undertake maintenance and operation of conservation laboratory facilities and equipment in compliance with DNCR and East Carolina University (ECU) environmental and health & safety requirements. 
  • Professional Development: Continue professional development through training, attending workshops, conferences, keeping up to date with professional literature, and appropriate memberships of professional organizations.

The Asian Civilisations Museum is the only museum in the region devoted to exploring the rich artistic heritage of Asia, especially the ancestral cultures of Singaporeans. Opened in 1997 and in its present building by the Singapore River since 2003, the museum traces its roots to the Raffles Museum, founded in the middle of 19th century. The Peranakan Museum (TPM) explores the art and culture of Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia and possesses one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Peranakan objects. Galleries on three floors illustrate the cultural traditions and distinctive visual arts of Peranakans.

Purpose of the Job

The Curator for Maritime Archaeology will research, interpret, and make accessible to the public ACM’s collections relating to maritime archaeology and the history of maritime trade in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

ACM is custodian of an extensive collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian ceramics, including many found in documented shipwrecks – most prominently, the cargo of the ninth century Tang Shipwreck. Travelling shows from ACM featuring the treasures of the Tang Shipwreck are in high demand from museums all around the world.

These maritime archaeology collections also include more than 9 tonnes of archaeological materials (ceramics, metal and some organic objects) dating to the 14th and the 18th centuries, providing insights into the early maritime trading history of Singapore and the region.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with ACM-TPM curatorial team in designing conceptual frameworks and narrative themes for permanent galleries and special exhibitions relating to maritime archaeology
  • Oversee the development of interpretive strategies for permanent galleries and special exhibitions for a wide range of visitors
  • Act as overall project manager for local and travelling exhibitions, working collaboratively with collection managers, conservators, designers, and related parties
  • Research and maintain a senior level expertise in the museum’s maritime archaeology collections, and act as subject matter expert in responding to queries from internal and external parties
  • Conceive, develop, and publish exhibition catalogues, scholarly articles, and related works, including via digital formats
  • In-depth involvement in acquisition of new artefacts, maintaining relationships with donors, and securing loans of collections and objects from other institutions and private collectors
  • Cultivate and sustain good working relationships with existing and potential patrons, trustees, key stakeholders, and museum colleagues across the country and abroad, as well as with the academic community, art dealers, and collectors.
  • Oversee the learning and accessibility programmes
  • Develop strong partnerships with various educational institutions to promote the museum’s school programmes
  • Work closely with docents to deliver content related to maritime archaeology

Requirements

  • Background in archaeology, applied arts, or art history, with preferably at least five years of work experience in a museum and/or related educational/research institution with equivalent focus on Asian art.
  • Express strong interest and possess specialised knowledge in ceramics
  • Excellent research and writing skills in English. Proficiency in other languages would be advantageous
  • Strong organisational, project management, and inter-personal skills, able to work independently and as part of a team

The Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy seeks a proactive and motivated historian to serve as its postdoctoral Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellow at The National WWII Museum.  With over 80,000 missing personnel unaccounted for from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War, the DPAA’s mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting to their families and the nation.  The DPAA Research Partner Fellow will support the Agency’s mission through conducting research and analysis. 

The position is funded for two years and requires residency at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans as a member of the Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.  The Fellow will also be an integral member of the Institute, a community of scholars dedicated to promoting the history of the American experience in World War II, the relationship between the war and America’s democratic system, and the war’s continued relevance for the world. 

The primary responsibility for this position is to support the Agency’s mission through conducting research and analysis that may include, but is not limited to, historical research and writing, data organization and management, digital humanities projects, GIS, foreign language translation, and public history work.  The Fellow will also have the opportunity to contribute to the Institute’s public history programs, oversee the research of interns and volunteers, and, if desired, teach one graduate-level course per year as part of the Museum’s partnership with Arizona State University. 

The qualified candidate will possess a PhD degree in history; demonstrated experience of historical research in archives and collections (both online and physical); proven experience in information collection / analysis; knowledge of WWII-era history; and the ability to collaborate with others.  Candidates with exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills will be preferred, as will those with strong organizational skills.  Proven project management skills are required.  Researchers with expertise in twentieth-century American Military History and Public History are especially encouraged to apply.
