  • Six (6) years of professional experience in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field. A master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field from an accredited college or university can substitute for the years of experience required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cultural resource surveys on Board of Trustees Lands
  • Manage and review applications for 1A-32 Archaeological Research Permits
  • Assist with underwater archaeology field projects
  • Assist with Archaeological Resource Management Training
  • Assist state land managers with cultural resource requests
  • Review applications and deliverables for archaeological projects funded by DHR Grants
  • Perform site damage assessments when needed
  • Perform other work-related duties as required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Florida’s pre-Columbian & historic archaeological cultures, including the types of sites & their general distribution in different geographic settings
  • Knowledge of archaeological survey, excavation, and laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of Florida’s historic preservation laws and procedures relevant to archaeological research permitting
  • Ability to construct research designs and plan and lead archaeological projects
  • Ability to conduct field research in Florida’s various environmental settings, both underwater and terrestrial
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, GPS technology, Photoshop, Illustrator, and MS Office suite
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare professional quality reports on the results of archaeological projects in a timely manner

What you will be doing

You will provide expert archaeological conservation advice to Historic England, the English Heritage Trust through a shared service agreement and to the wider sector.  You will provide expertise in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of artefactual assemblages and historic features on Historic England projects, on projects undertaken in collaboration with universities and other IROs and on commissioned projects.  You will develop and undertake innovative heritage science research in support of the Historic England Corporate Plan and Research Agenda, including leading on and commissioning projects.  You will actively engage in increasing the public value and impact of your research including developing and taking part in public engagement activities. You will champion archaeological conservation, seeking opportunities to present Historic England work at national and international fora.  

An important part of your role will be to manage and develop the Maritime Conservation Facility, including overseeing access, training and supervision of external users.  You will develop and contribute to the delivery of training as part of disseminating best practice and developing capacity in archaeological conservation. 

You will work closely with other marine specialist colleagues across Historic England to ensure the organisation delivers a seamless service on all relevant issues.  

What we are looking for

  • A post-graduate qualification in a relevant conservation discipline or equivalent experience
  • Proven and extensive experience in archaeological conservation practice
  • Broad and proven experience in the use of X-ray, and /or vacuum-freeze drying equipment as applied to cultural materials
  • Demonstrable understanding of current issues affecting conservation practice in the commercial, voluntary and academic sectors in the UK
  • Proven and extensive experience in archaeological conservation practice
  • Confident and adaptable communication style, able to work constructively with a wide range of internal and external partners

As Cultural Heritage Inspector, you will bring specialist knowledge and additional capacity to the Culture Department (Statia Government) to support the development and preservation of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage in line with the island’s cultural policy plan and the Culture Covenant CN.

You will proactively contribute to further cultural development, address social issues affecting the island’s cultural identity, and support promising initiatives and partnerships, laying a strong foundation for the future.

St. Eustatius actively collaborates with surrounding islands, other Dutch Caribbean territories, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and various knowledge partners, including UNESCO, the Knowledge Centre for Intangible Heritage Netherlands (KIEN), and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect historical sites to assess required restoration and conservation work, including cost estimation and safety measures.
  • Monitor and report on maritime and underwater heritage, in collaboration with stakeholders and government entities.
  • Manage, lobby for, and facilitate the return of historical artefacts to the island, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Present project proposals to sustain tangible and intangible cultural heritage, aligned with UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) frameworks.
  • Provide guidance on inquiries and advise the Government and relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct research using archives, heritage legislation, and conservation standards.
  • Stay updated on international heritage preservation standards.
  • Create heritage policies applicable to both Government and NGOs.
  • Collaborate with conservation and planning departments.

  • Ensure the preservation and conservation of heritage sites across the island.

Working Conditions

  • Temporary employment to replace absent staff.
  • Placement in salary scale 12, between gross $5,500.99 and $6,884.96 monthly (based on a 36-hour work week), as per the Statia Government salary table dated 4 December 2024. Placement within the scale depends on qualifications and experience.
  • Full-time 36-hour work week.
  • Holiday allowance of 8.33% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% of the annual income.

Job Requirements

Egypt launches photography competition to promote underwater cultural heritage

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has launched a photography competition to raise public awareness of Egypt’s rich underwater cultural heritage.

The competition, which begins Friday, 1 August, invites participants to capture artistic images of artefacts that emerged from the Mediterranean Sea and are currently on display at the Graeco-Roman Museum and the Alexandria National Museum in Alexandria.

It comes in light of Egypt’s efforts to highlight its submerged archaeological treasures aligning with its commitment to the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

“The competition is part of broader efforts to engage the public with Egypt’s diverse heritage and to promote appreciation for historical finds recovered from beneath the Mediterranean,” said Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy. 

He added that this initiative reflects the ministry’s ongoing dedication to enhancing awareness and appreciation of underwater cultural heritage and to showcasing Egypt’s unique archaeological assets to the world.

According to Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the competition is one of several cultural events planned by the ministry to shed light on submerged heritage sites and artefacts.

Full competition details and updates will be published on the ministry’s official social media platforms.

He continued that the photographers in Egypt and abroad are eligible to participate, with a photography window open from August 1 to 10 August, during the official operating hours of both museums in Alexandria. Submissions must be sent to training@mota.gov.eg by Thursday, 14 August, and must include the photograph along with a short biography of the participant.

Photos will be evaluated by a specialized jury comprising university professors and experts in photography and archaeology. The panel will operate under the supervision of the competition’s technical secretariat.

Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resources Development and Head of the Central Training Unit, explained that evaluation criteria will focus on technical quality, creativity, and the ability to highlight the aesthetic and historical value of the featured artefacts. The names of the winners will be announced on 18 August, with an official award ceremony scheduled for 21 August.

The ministry has extended an open invitation to both Egyptian and international photography enthusiasts to take part in this unique cultural initiative, which blends art, history, and heritage preservation.

Background
Maritime Heritage Trust is based on the merger in 2011 of 2 organisations – the original Maritime Trust (MT) created by His Royal Highness Prince Philip and others in 1971 and Heritage Afloat founded by preservation groups and individual vessel owners in 1994. These 2 organisations have built up an exceptional experience and knowledge in this field, with the original MT having rescued and saved over 20 vessels of outstanding historic importance (now cared for mainly by individual trusts) and Heritage Afloat based on the principle of preservation through keeping vessels operational. Much success has been achieved but vessel maintenance is highly challenging through weather and the decay of materials and as original preservationists retire the need for a stronger community role is paramount. Meanwhile local communities have come together in the Heritage Harbours movement to help save valued features and MHT has acted as convener of the movement as it develops. MHT now has around 70 members (organisations, individuals and Friends), a Membership Officer (1 day a week), online talks to help members (Youtube)and an admired website http://www.maritimeheritage.org.uk 

A Governance Review was carried out in early 2022, followed by recruitment of younger, more diverse Trustees. Currently the male/female gender balance is 56/44%.
Terms and Commitment The roles are unpaid. Expenses for travel etc for Trust events are payable. A minimum of 4 Board meetings a year plus an AGM  is expected usually online and with occasional in person events. For the Chair, preparatory and representational time of 1-2 days a month is likely to be needed. Other meetings and visits may be needed as projects are developed and managed. A commitment of 3 years is sought, renewable.

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), Environmental Compliance Division – Atlantic Section, in either Sterling, VA or Hadley, Massachusetts. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a program lead performing archaeological and historic preservation for the ECD’s Atlantic Region. The incumbent also serves as the Regional Federal Preservation Officer and supports the agency in environmental justice program issues.

At the full performance level (GS-13) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

1. The Regional Archeologist (Marine) is responsible for coordinating BSEE-approved activities, advocating legal requirements, and developing/interpreting/implementing policy regarding archaeology and historic preservation issues.

2. Serves as the archaeological resource management expert, pursuant to P.L. 96-515, acting as consultant, advisor, and technical authority to Department officials, the Deputy Director, Regional Directors, the Atlantic Regional Environmental Officer (REO), and other scientists and engineers in archaeological matters. Ensures that archaeological concerns are addressed in the formation of National and Regional policy that leads to the development of regulations, implementation guidelines, and procedures for renewable energy, oil and gas and marine minerals in the Atlantic Region on the OCS. Develops and/or maintains, in coordination with Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), databases for archaeological resources.

3. Reviews pertinent Federal laws (e.g., National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA) and regulations (e.g., 36 CFR Part 800) to determine effects on archaeological resources matters and on BSEE’s OCS program.

4. Prepares technical and policy documents concerning archaeological resource and anthropological data and information and expected minerals activities impacts for BSEE/BOEM correspondence, briefing material, and issues and option papers. Prepares highly specialized reports for use in decision-making by the Agency, or other Federal agencies, or as testimony before Congress.

5. Initiates and takes lead responsibility for the planning and conducting of coordination meetings, industry/public workshops, Information Transfer Meeting (ITM) sessions, and other conference work related to national historic preservation oversight. Represents the BSEE/Office at professional meetings, and on task forces or committees involving Federal, State, or private agencies and individuals.

6. Leads any archaeology and historic preservation-related studies/research/compliance projects in support of the Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) or Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for BSEE. Develops, designs, procures, administers, and evaluates major science/compliance studies/research that may require participating in or overseeing the collection, standardization, and analysis of environmental data related to OCS resources and/or industry activities and identifying specific archaeological and historic preservation issues and problems that will need to be addressed and resolved through additional research and/or coordination.BSEE has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework with supervisory approval.

The Lead Shipwrights will be joining the team at an exciting stage in the progress of the conservation of HMS Victory, as we continue on a ten-year programme of works to stabilise and preserve the ship.

The work involves management of the Victory’s Shipwright Team to deliver the work to repair Victory’s hull, including replacement of all external planking, from waterline to sheer strake. You will be a senior member of the project team developing and delivering the plan for conservation of the ship. You will bring your skills from similar timber ship and heritage conservation projects and apply them to Victory’s conservation.

Teamwork and communication skills are key aspects of this role to ensure that best practice is applied to all our work.

Key Opportunities

  • Opportunity to lead the team of shipwrights in their works on HMS Victory, which are critical to the future preservation of the ship.
  • Be a key member of the team working to improve and develop the conservation approach to HMS Victory, taking responsibility for ensuring the quality of timber required for shipwright works is met.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Conservation team and within Museum Operations, providing advice and/or practical assistance as appropriate.

Knowledge/Experience

You will have:

 Specialist knowledge of the construction, conservation and maintenance of timber historic ships or built heritage. You will have knowledge of the technical properties of timber as relevant to ship building or the construction and repair of timber framed historic buildings.

  • Experience of leading a team in timber ship conservation or conservation carpenters.
  • Experience in the production and use of project documentation.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Experience of writing RAMS.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office computer programs.
  • Knowledge of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) (desirable, not essential).
  • Experience of leading, managing and motivating staff.
  • A positive attitude and ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.

Historic England’s (HE) marine and coastal activities encompass heritage in the sea, affected by the sea, or related to the sea.  Our advice informs and is informed by a dynamic array of policy areas across government, including UK-wide and international dimensions.  This post supports HE’s Corporate Plan with respect to our advice to government departments and public bodies on the development, effectiveness and impact of policy relating to Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH).

HE’s activities relating to UCH encompass teams working in several specific areas: designation, licensing, marine planning, heritage information and materials conservation.  This temporary post is intended to progress the development of policy in areas of focus that extend beyond these operational ones, to clarify their scope, collate evidence and frame potential solutions.

Areas of work may include, for example, approaches to managing UCH subject to degradation from natural processes, reporting mechanisms for discoveries made by the public, increasing the visibility of public value arising from UCH, integrating UCH with nature recovery, marine protection and fisheries management, and improving protocols for seabed mapping of UCH.

In this role, you may be called upon to spend a proportion of your time working on other areas of policy development in response to changing priorities.

The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home – Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth and Cambridge.

National: £36,603 – £36,800 pro-rata

What you will be doing

Develop evidence and insight

Collect and assimilate evidence on policy issues relating to UCH.

Prepare briefing notes and case studies, to include outlining options for further action.

Support colleagues in meetings with key government departments and public bodies by drafting background papers and contributing technical expertise.

Inform legislation, policy and guidance

  • Anticipate, consider and prepare responses to proposals and consultations, ensuring that proper account is taken of UCH.
  • Maintain and develop strategic relationships with government departments, public bodies, and other organisations concerned with UCH.
  • Represent HE at a range of forums concerned with UCH.

Engage and update HE colleagues and the Heritage sector

Work with colleagues across the Policy Development Team to ensure, through horizon scanning and more detailed reviews, that HE understands the latest trends and implications of policy and other changes.

Draft HE advice and position statements relating to UCH to inform colleagues across HE and in the wider sector.

Work flexibly to cover wider strategic issues in response to changing national and organisational priorities, as determined in discussion with senior colleagues.

Who we are looking for

  • Robust technical knowledge of current law, policy, guidance and challenges relating to UCH in the UK.
  • Well-developed knowledge of UK governance relating to UCH and clear understanding of the wider historic environment sector.
  • Significant experience of applying law, policy, and guidance to managing UCH.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for a wide range of audiences, including writing in both technical and non-technical styles.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop evidence-based policy recommendations.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of external partners and stakeholders with both authority and sensitivity.

Eligibility

  • South African citizenship;
  • Letter of provisional acceptance / letter of admission from the institution;
  • Not older than forty (40) years;
  • Outstanding / satisfactory academic performance (academic progress report if already at an institution) or (Grade 12 if you are a 1st year student);
