Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cultural resource surveys on Board of Trustees Lands
  • Manage and review applications for 1A-32 Archaeological Research Permits
  • Assist with underwater archaeology field projects
  • Assist with Archaeological Resource Management Training
  • Assist state land managers with cultural resource requests
  • Review applications and deliverables for archaeological projects funded by DHR Grants
  • Perform site damage assessments when needed
  • Perform other work-related duties as required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Florida’s pre-Columbian & historic archaeological cultures, including the types of sites & their general distribution in different geographic settings
  • Knowledge of archaeological survey, excavation, and laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of Florida’s historic preservation laws and procedures relevant to archaeological research permitting
  • Ability to construct research designs and plan and lead archaeological projects
  • Ability to conduct field research in Florida’s various environmental settings, both underwater and terrestrial
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, GPS technology, Photoshop, Illustrator, and MS Office suite
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare professional quality reports on the results of archaeological projects in a timely manner

The MarEA Project (Maritime Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa) is a collaborative initiative led by the University of Southampton and Ulster University, in partnership with Oxford University. Our mission is to document and preserve the rich maritime archaeology of the coastal regions across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Researcher to join our team. In this role, you will contribute to the project’s success by conducting remote sensing research, collecting and analysing data across the MENA region, and supporting field surveys and training programs. This position will be based at the University of Southampton but will also require occasional travel to the MENA region.

Key responsibilities for the job are: 1) conduct research using remote sensing techniques and data collection methods across the MENA region, under the guidance of the project director; 2)  Participate in ground surveys and contribute to training programs in selected countries within the project area; 3) Support the Principal Investigators (PIs) in achieving the project’s deliverables and advancing its objectives; 4) collaborate with an international team to ensure successful project outcomes.

Essential qualifications & skills we are looking for are: 1) extensive work experience in the MENA region; 2) proficiency in using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and remote sensing for archaeological research; 3) strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and 4) excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to engage with diverse stakeholders. Experience with coastal and maritime archaeology is also desirable.

The role will be primarily office-based at the University of Southampton, but flexibility is required, as overseas travel to the MENA region may be necessary.

CALL FOR PAPERS. Travellers of the Sea – Conference on Maritime History, Marine Archaeology and Ethnology

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for Travellers of the Sea – Conference on Maritime History, Marine Archaeology and Ethnology. The travelling conference will take place at the Maritime Centre Forum Marinum, Turku, House of Sciences and Letters in Helsinki, Finland and at the Estonian Maritime Museum in Tallinn, Estonia, on 11th–13th June 2026.

It is organised by the Finnish Maritime History Association, the Finnish Maritime Archaeological Society, the Estonian Maritime Museum and the Maritime Centre Forum Marinum.

We aim to bring together scholars and students working on maritime history and related fields such as maritime archaeology, ethnology and maritime folklore. We hope to promote interdisciplinary encounters and discussions. The conference is intended for anyone working with topics somehow relating to the sea and maritime travel – previous experience with maritime history, maritime archaeology, or maritime ethnology specifically is not necessary.

The overall theme of the conference is travelling by sea, with no temporal or geographical limits. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, passenger trade, migration, and travel by sailors, ideas, and cultural influences. For example, presentations on passenger services abroad, travelling conditions on exploration and refugee voyages, and moving military troops by sea are very welcome. We take a multispecies approach to the theme and are interested in the travelling of humans as well as non-human animals and other living beings.

The deadline for proposals is 1st November 2025. In addition to individual papers, we welcome
proposals for complete three-to-four-paper panels. Please include the main contact person and their email, plus the names, affiliations, and emails for all the participants (including co-authors not planning to attend).
Proposals (up to 500 words) and are sent by email to conference secretary Emilia Syväsalmi (talous[at]smhy.fi). The participants will be notified of acceptance by 5th December 2025. The bi-annual, peer-reviewed journal Nautica Fennica will be offering participants the possibility to submit their papers in the journal. The publishing decisions will be made by the Nautica Fennica editorial board.

The conference will be held in-person, and we cannot guarantee hybrid participation. Conference
language is English apart from 11th June, when the new researchers’ meeting will be held in Finnish and Swedish.

Women in Maritime Archaeology: Developing Actions for an Equitable Future

The Maritime Archaeology Trust has received a grant from Historic England to better understand the issues of equality of opportunity for women in maritime archaeology and to develop initiatives to actively improve the situation. The previous Women and Protected Wrecks: Examining Engagement project demonstrated a number of issues impacting women in the field, which, along with the experience of working in the contemporary discipline from a range of practitioners, led to the development of this initiative.

The Women and PWs project used quantitative and qualitative research to investigate low levels of women involved with England’s PWs. Although primarily focussed on PWs it did provide some sobering figures in relation to female representation in maritime archaeology. Some of the headline statistics found during the research showed that:

  • The number of female Protected Wreck (PW) licensees is now at 6%, while numbers within PW teams exhibit a consistent trend of being 80% male and 20% female;
  • Other statistics from across the sector included: within professional maritime archaeology (largely commercial and charity sector) there were 56% women and 44% men; University teaching staff are 65% male: 35% female; membership-based organisations are 63% male: 37% female; at Trustee, Board and Patron level in organisations it is 70% male: 30% female;
  • Those speaking at maritime archaeological conferences are 80% male: 20% female, and within maritime archaeological publication the proportion of female authors is 20%, and within just UK PWs publication that falls to 13%;
  • The percentages of women involved in UK diving is around 30% female: 70% male.

The results and recommendations generated by Women and PWs, gave the first empirical data to consider this area of the discipline, and this new project will build on this. It will assess how the situation is impacting women in contemporary practice, influencing the creation of maritime archaeological knowledge and the setting of research, management and protection priorities. During the project a number of initiatives will be established to begin to actively improve the gender balance in maritime archaeology, and address the issues faced by many women in the profession.

We recognise that achieving gender equality in maritime archaeology requires a multifaceted approach, from addressing historical biases in research and interpretation to promoting equitable practices in education, fieldwork, research, practice and professional recognition. This project will provide the understanding of contemporary maritime archaeology and the issues and barriers faced and will begin to affect positive change through targeted actions. Work to be delivered will include:

  • Research on the representation of women in publications, conferences, teaching, groups and organisations.
  • Survey and interviews with women in maritime archaeology
  • Survey and interviews with senior managers in maritime archaeology
  • A series of workshops
  • Developing a network for women in maritime archaeology

There is a lot at stake if measures to understand and take action on equality in maritime archaeology in England are not taken which will continue to impact the next generation. This includes a continued loss of talent and innovation, under representation of women in decision-making, reinforcing gender stereotypes, stifling career advancement and impacts on research outcomes. This baseline study will allow understanding of gender roles within the development of the discipline and ensure future projects and recommendations have a detailed history to draw on.

This project will adopt an intersectional approach, with a focus on gender parity. While gender will be the primary focus, it is acknowledged that individuals may experience multiple, overlapping forms of disadvantage or privilege. Further efforts will be needed to promote greater diversity within the sector.

What you will be doing

You will provide expert archaeological conservation advice to Historic England, the English Heritage Trust through a shared service agreement and to the wider sector.  You will provide expertise in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of artefactual assemblages and historic features on Historic England projects, on projects undertaken in collaboration with universities and other IROs and on commissioned projects.  You will develop and undertake innovative heritage science research in support of the Historic England Corporate Plan and Research Agenda, including leading on and commissioning projects.  You will actively engage in increasing the public value and impact of your research including developing and taking part in public engagement activities. You will champion archaeological conservation, seeking opportunities to present Historic England work at national and international fora.  

An important part of your role will be to manage and develop the Maritime Conservation Facility, including overseeing access, training and supervision of external users.  You will develop and contribute to the delivery of training as part of disseminating best practice and developing capacity in archaeological conservation. 

You will work closely with other marine specialist colleagues across Historic England to ensure the organisation delivers a seamless service on all relevant issues.  

What we are looking for

  • A post-graduate qualification in a relevant conservation discipline or equivalent experience
  • Proven and extensive experience in archaeological conservation practice
  • Broad and proven experience in the use of X-ray, and /or vacuum-freeze drying equipment as applied to cultural materials
  • Demonstrable understanding of current issues affecting conservation practice in the commercial, voluntary and academic sectors in the UK

About the Role
The position Manager Maritime Archaeology is a senior leadership role within the Knowledge team responsible for managing and developing the museum’s maritime archaeology initiatives. 

Key responsibilities include planning and leading maritime archaeology projects, managing team members, procuring equipment and ensuring its safe operation, oversight of the museum’s research vessel, budgeting and project collaborations. The Manager provides expert advice on maritime archaeology and oversees the acquisition, research and interpretation of maritime archaeology collection items through exhibitions, digital and online programs. 

The position has a significant role in museum policy, including remaining abreast of relevant maritime archaeology legislation and Protection of Cultural Objects on Loan (PCOL) protocols.
This is a role with a high duty of care responsibility, including ensuring currency of all diving requirements and training of staff and volunteers undertaking fieldwork. A key element is research leadership, through practical projects such as interpretation and reconstruction of archaeologically excavated sites, and in scholarly publishing and presentations.

The position will work with the museum’s Digital and Communications teams to develop and maintain a dedicated and vibrant online resource that reflects and showcases the museum’s work in maritime archaeology.

Key Accountabilities
Under broad direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:

  • Manage the development of a national centre in maritime archaeology by furthering research activities that support and complement broader national maritime heritage efforts.
  • Plan and deliver maritime archaeology programs, including underwater surveys and collaborative research projects, both within and beyond Australian waters.
  • Research and publish accounts of maritime archaeology in scholarly, public and specialist forums.
  • Represent the Museum in public forums, media opportunities, conferences, and cultural networks.
  • Research and develop curatorial content for exhibitions and public programs, providing leadership and expert input on exhibition and program development and review. 
  • Actively seek external grants, funding and key donations and provide support to the ANMM Foundation fundraising activities.
  • Manage and mentor the maritime archaeologists, including direction of major projects such as reconstruction of an archaeologically excavated vessel and collaborative research programs.
  • Manage the budget and maintain diving and maritime archaeology equipment according to relevant safety standards and the museum’s maritime archaeology policy and procedures, including training and maintaining relevant qualifications.
  • Participate in the museum’s Acquisitions Committee, and in monitoring the museum’s obligations and processes including PCOL, the Collection Development Policy and relevant Maritime Archaeology legislation.

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience as a project leader or principal investigator on maritime archaeology projects, including both underwater and terrestrial sites.
  2. Advanced Open Water Diving Qualifications along with Rescue Diver and Nitrox (EANx) endorsements, plus a recent (< 12 months) dive medical confirming capacity to undertake a regular program of scuba and/or surfacesupplied diving to depths up to 30 metres.
  3. Extensive knowledge of Australian maritime history and heritage, demonstrated via a wide range of published work in maritime archaeology. 
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of maritime archaeology legislation in regard to fieldwork, consultation, interpretation and object acquisition.
  5. High-level public engagement skills and experience in media, conferences, presentations and public speaking. 
  6. Successful track record in securing grants, consultancies or other external revenue streams to support maritime archaeology programs.

Qualifications and/or relevant experience required
Desirable:

  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain ADAS Part 2 qualification for surface-supplied breathing apparatus to 30m.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence and minimum coxswain grade 3 certificate in boat operation.
  • Experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or collections.
  • Relevant international experience, including working with cultures outside Western/English-speaking countries.
  • Familiarity with or ability to use archival record keeping systems such as ELO.
  • Experience with collection management database systems such as TMS.

Applications are invited for a Resident Academic full-time post in Maritime Archaeology the Department of Classics & Archaeology within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta. 

The appointee will be required to contribute to the teaching, research and other activities of the Department of Classics & Archaeology within the Faculty of Arts, and as may be required by the University.

The appointment will be on a definite two-year contract of employment, with the possibility of renewal.

Candidates must be in possession of a PhD or a D.Phil. in Mediterranean maritime archaeology, obtained from a reputable University. Applicants with professional doctorates are not eligible. Candidates must hold an Advanced Open-Water qualification, coupled with experience in underwater archaeological projects in the Mediterranean, and possess a detailed understanding, knowledge, and experience of surveying submerged and semi-submerged structures. Candidates must be motivated and self-starters and possess a valid driving licence. The successful applicant will be required to present the original certificate upon request by the Office for Human Resources Management & Development.

Preference will be given to multilingual candidates with a working knowledge of Maltese and the local context of our research.

The Resident Academic Stream is composed of four grades, being Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer. Entry into the grade of Lecturer or above shall only be open to persons in possession of a Ph.D. or a D.Phil. within strict guidelines established by the University.

The annual salary for 2025 attached to the respective grades in the Resident Academic Stream is as follows:

*Professor; €49,093 plus an Academic Supplement of €31,523 and a Professorial Allowance of €2,330

* Associate Professor; €45,139 plus Academic Supplement of €24,154 and a Professorial Allowance of €1,423

Senior Lecturer; €40,952 plus an Academic Supplement of €17,279

Lecturer; €34,283 with an annual increment of €641 to €36,206 and an Academic Supplement of €14,213

*The University will only consider appointing an applicant at the grade of Professor or Associate Professor, when the applicant already holds an equivalent appointment at a University or Research Institute of repute.

The University of Malta will provide academic staff with financial resources through the Academic Resources Fund to support continuous professional development and to provide the tools and resources required by an academic to adequately fulfil the teaching and academic research commitments within the University.

The University may also appoint promising candidates as Assistant Lecturers who do not yet possess a Ph.D.  provided that applicants:

General Working Obligations:

The conditions of work for a Resident Academic of the University of Malta, are set out in the ‘Collective Agreement for Academic Staff of the University of Malta’.

Full-time Resident Academic staff are required to give a commitment based on a 40- hour per week with flexible times throughout the year, that is not only during semester time, depending on agreed timetables and distributed reasonably between teaching, academic research and academic administration.

Full-time Resident Academic staff are normally expected to be available for four and a half days per week to deliver their academic duties, meet with students and to participate actively in the academic life of the Department.

The official lecturing times of the University will be between 08:00 and 20:00 hours. The University may specify that the lecturing load will be conducted predominantly in any specific periods of the day between 08:00 and 20:00 hours.

In accordance with their conditions of employment and in order to meet the requirements of their role, Resident Academic staff are required to work on campus and/or on clinical venues organized by the Faculty throughout the academic year, except for periods of authorised absence. Consequently, Resident Academic staff are required to reside no more than forty (40) kms from Campus.

The Department of Classics & Archaeology

The Department of Classics & Archaeology is a friendly department with an energetic academic and support staff dedicated to the teaching and study of the ancient world and archaeological practice to local, visiting, and overseas students. We have an active research programme that also includes a number of international collaborations in the fields of prehistory, the history of archaeology, maritime archaeology, and environmental archaeology. We have our own building on campus for teaching and research, and have access to scientific facilities, laboratories, and expertise in a number of faculties. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered in both Classics and Archaeology.

One of these courses is the MA in Global Maritime Archaeology. A number of projects in the field of maritime and underwater archaeology are conducted by academics and . The Malta Shipwreck Project sees the utilisation of state-of-the-art remote sensing equipment to map the seabed and create an archaeological map of Malta and Gozo’s underwater cultural heritage. One of the results of this broad survey is the development of Aviation Archaeology Underwater – a new and emerging discipline in the field of Historical Archaeology. The Phoenician Shipwreck Project is currently one of the most important excavations in the central Mediterranean and brings together numerous partners including the CNRS (Aix), and the University of Urbino. Moreover a training excavation of a harbour deposit datable to the Imperial and Late Roman periods is conducted. Submerged structures around the coasts of Malta and Gozo also form part of the research programme. Lastly, local ethnographic studies related to traditional boatbuilding, fishing and other related maritime work (dockyards, stevedores etc) are an integral part of the programme’s work.

The appointee will be required to carry out the following specific duties, as well as other that may from time to time be required by the Department of Classics & Archaeology:

  • Responsible for the execution of a number of tasks related to the Maritime Archaeology Programme within the Department of Classics and Archaeology.
  • Organise, manage and analyse the data produced by the programme’s projects.
  • Contribute to ongoing projects. Moreover, the Lecturer will be expected to develop his/her own projects.
  • Undertake report writing including publication in scientific journals, and dissemination of project results. They may be required to make presentations at conferences and meetings, locally and abroad, as well as the organisation of a maritime archaeology lecture series.
  • Contribute to the coordination of the MA in Global Maritime Archaeology.
  • Assist with various administrative duties related to the running of the Maritime Archaeology Programme.
  • Contribute to the running of social media and web presence of the Maritime Archaeology Programme.
  • Expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

The general duties which the appointee may be expected to perform are:

  • Teaching, including tutorials, seminars, supervision, practical work and placements, monitoring on projects and other personally undertaken student enterprises;
  • Preparing course materials;
  • Researching and publishing, both individually and collaboratively, in priority areas established by the University;
  • Continuous assessment of students, setting and marking of examination papers, including dissertations, within established time-frames;
  • Participating in the administration of academic affairs at academic and university levels;
  • Contributing to national and regional development particularly in the area of specialisation and through cooperation with governmental, intergovernmental, regional and non-governmental institutions and services;
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the University.

Our Digital Archaeologist will lead on the continuous development, population and maintenance of the Victory Information Model (VIM). They will design, plan and execute surveys of the ship, GIS outputs, 3D modelling, and they will be conducting photogrammetry and laser scanning of relevant areas of the ship’s fabric.

Our Digital Archaeologist will also be responsible for the addition of the archaeological and historical evidence – revealed from past inherited information systems including original documents, previous restoration projects and specialist surveys – to the project database (VID). Public speaking and participation in events with specialists and the general public are also part of the role.

Are you looking for a paid training placement in maritime archaeology? Then we would like to hear from you. We are offering two 15-day internships this summer to give those studying in relevant disciplines the opportunity to experience working in the heritage sector as part of a paid internship.

MSDS Marine are a Marine and Coastal Contractor specialising in the management, execution and support of archaeological projects in the marine environment. MSDS Marine endeavors to provide opportunities during our projects where new skills can be learnt or existing skills developed, these opportunities can be for members of the public, early career professionals or maritime archaeologists looking to broaden their experience. An internship at MSDS Marine will give you the opportunity to work alongside our archaeology professionals and learn new skills in a supportive, friendly environment.

MSDS Marine have grown steadily since they were first established in 2011 and are now a market leader in maritime archaeology in the UK. In March 2025 we were awarded the contract for the provision of services in relation to marine designation for 2025-2027 on behalf of Historic England. We have worked with Historic England on designated and undesignated wreck sites for many years and look forward to working with them on this contract to select and provide appropriate field services for the sites that are chosen for investigation. We have a strong background in engaging with and helping communities and volunteers care for marine heritage assets and look forward to working with divers and others to ensure they feel included in projects at all stages whilst ensuring positive outcomes for the heritage sites we investigate. These internships will allow participants to become involved with all aspects of the contract, including visiting diving operations and participating in surface support. 

The exact dates of placements remain to be confirmed and can be agreed with the successful applicants in due course, but it is anticipated that they will run between June and September and will involve weekend working. One placement is likely to run from the 30th June 2025.

You will be a student or recent graduate with a passion for marine heritage and be looking for experience in a real-world setting. We are looking for someone who would welcome the opportunity to work with MSDS Marine to help develop their career and knowledge.

The role will require you to undertake a range of activities including desk-based research and field visits, alongside, and supported by, the wider MSDS Marine team.

The roles require excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as some understanding of protected wreck sites in England (but don’t worry we can teach you this!). The internship will be based at the MSDS Marine Head Office in Holbrook, Derbyshire although some fieldwork away from the office will be required. Interns will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements for the office based elements of the placement and MSDS Marine will arrange and pay for travel, accommodation and subsistence during fieldwork.

Key Responsibilities


• Conduct historical research and draft detailed reports on shipwrecks, including government funding programs and projects aligned with CAC’s strategic initiatives.
• Identify, document, and analyze historic shipwrecks, including warships, merchant vessels, and passenger ships lost in Canadian waters, particularly in Newfoundland & Labrador, The Northwest Passage, Baffin Islands, and the Arctic regions.
• Build and maintain relationships with investors, regulators, stakeholders, and global maritime museums.
• Oversee and manage historical maritime art, cultural artifacts, treasures, and high-value shipwreck cargo portfolios valued between $1B-$10B.
• Provide expertise on significant historical maritime events, such as World War I & II naval battlefields, pirate treasures, and legendary maritime explorations.
• Maintain extensive knowledge of John Cabot’s voyages, Viking explorations, and European maritime history related to North America.
• Collaborate with film and entertainment industry partners, including The History Channel, on historical documentary productions related to shipwrecks and treasure discoveries (e.g., Oak Island).

• Utilize underwater sonar mapping and archaeological survey methodologies to analyze shipwreck sites.
• Ensure adherence to corporate policies, regulatory requirements, and confidentiality protocols.
• Support expedition planning, mapping, and data analysis to enhance CAC’s operational efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience


• Ph.D. in Maritime History, Archaeology, or Shipwreck Recovery.
• 15+ years of experience working with maritime museums globally, including in Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Ireland, England, the UK, the EU, Spain, Africa, and the USA.
• Proven leadership experience with at least 10 years in a senior director role overseeing economic and business development in maritime exploration, luxury yachting, and treasure recovery.
• Expertise in historical artifact identification, shipwreck cargo valuation, and preservation of maritime cultural heritage.
• Extensive experience managing investor relations and networking with Fortune 500 companies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex historical information to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects under tight deadlines while balancing multiple priorities.

Preferred Skills & Expertise


• Experience with deep-sea exploration, submarine operations, and offshore adventure tourism.
• Strong understanding of climate change, global warming, and marine research impacts on historical sites.
• Ability to design, direct, and supervise archaeological projects, including Phase I, II, and III underwater excavation processes.

Open Post Doc: Integrating Natural and Cultural Data: Focus Area, Indian Ocean

Data gathering, assessment, and modeling across disciplinary divides offers an optimal approach to improve knowledge at the intersection of natural and anthropogenic systems. The Seetah Lab at Stanford University seeks a postdoctoral scholar with the capacity to support field research on a range of projects in the Indian Ocean, principally the islands of the Republic of Mauritius, including the Chagos Archipelago. Support for this position comes from two projects: ‘Adaptive Reflective Modelling – ARM – Against Malaria’, funded by a Propel Grant from the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research, and ‘Decolonization through Natural and Cultural Resource Assessment’, funded by a Big Ideas for Oceans Grant, Woods Institute for the Environment. Requirements for the post-doc are a Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, heritage studies, environmental science, or combination/experience thereof. Experience of working in the Indian Ocean region would be an added benefit, as would knowledge of archaeological survey techniques, or the digital humanities. The postdoc will undertake surveys to assess both natural and cultural data resources to support the two projects mentioned above, contribute to publications, and provide logistical support as needed.

The role – what’s involved?

You can expect to be involved in a wide range of specialist-led projects relating to terrestrial, near-shore and offshore environments, which will include specialist desk-based assessments, borehole surveys and monitoring of Ground Investigation works, Pleistocene and Palaeolithic evaluation and mitigation works, palaeoenvironmental assessments, submerged palaeolandscape assessments and much more. Wessex Archaeology is a market leader in the provision of geoarchaeological services across terrestrial, intertidal and marine environments, and current team comprises geoarchaeologists at all stages of their career, including specialists of international standing in Marine, Pleistocene/Palaeolithic and Holocene geoarchaeology.
 

You will have the opportunity to work closely with other technical experts across Geoservices, Marine Geophysics, Terrestrial Geophysics, Environmental and Geomatics), Fieldwork, Coastal and Marine and Heritage teams on some of the most exciting and high-profile archaeological sites and projects in the UK.
 

Main responsibilities will include: 

The precise responsibilities of the role will depend on the grade at which the successful candidate is appointed (Supervisor or Project Officer). Further details are provided in the role specification.
 

Candidates will ideally have a degree/post-graduate degree in geoarchaeology, archaeology, Quaternary science, or a closely related Earth Science subject. You will be confident in the description and interpretation of Quaternary sedimentary sequences with a solid understanding of depositional environments and processes. You will have strong reporting and communication skills, along with a willingness to learn and expand your knowledge. Previous experience of working in a commercial environment, including fieldwork, is desirable but not essential as training will be provided. Existing experience in British archaeology and deposit modelling is not essential as you will be given the chance to build your expertise in this area through training and mentorship. 
 

Desirable certification  

  • Hold a post-graduate qualification in Geoarchaeology, Archaeology, Quaternary Science or a closely related discipline
  • Confident in describing and interpreting Quaternary sediments in both an archaeological and geoarchaeological context
  • Experience working in a commercial environment, including fieldwork experience
  • Sound knowledge of terrestrial depositional environments and processes
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills

The Center for the Study of the First Americans, Texas A&M University, is seeking a Research Specialist II to undertake research on the submerged archaeological landscapes of the Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, under the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) funded project ‘Reevaluating BOEM’s Guidelines for Identifying Submerged Pre-Contact Archaeological Sites in the Gulf of America: a Geoarchaeological Approach’. The Research Specialist II, Submerged Gulf of America Landscapes, will use legacy survey data made available by project partners, as well as new data, to support project partners’ and BOEM’s ongoing work to update and refine methods for detection and examination of submerged landscapes across the Gulf of America. The selected candidate’s full-time effort will be dedicated to actively formulating, analyzing, and testing scientific predictions on the preservation and discovery of submerged terrestrial sites in collaboration with project partners, including Tribal entities. Additional responsibilities consist of empirical methods (utilizing legacy and new remote sensing data) and theoretical modeling (mathematical, statistical, and computational).

  • R survey modeling: Assess BOEM survey guidelines and methodologies for identifying preserved paleolandforms and potential pre-Contact archaeological sites.
  • Tribal Consultation: With project partners, engage tribal communities to seek their perspectives on the purpose, design, and results of this study and incorporate these perspectives into the landscape and survey models.
  • Data management: With project partners, make sure that new data and legacy data are properly maintained with metadata kept to international standards.
  • Report and article preparation: Provide support with project team on quarterly and annual reports, prepare articles on findings.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONSERVATOR

Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), an agency of the Maryland Historical Trust, within the Maryland Department of Planning, is recruiting for a full time, permanent Archaeological Conservator.   JPPM is located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, and is the State Museum of Archaeology and a center for both regional and statewide archaeological research.  It is home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab), which houses over 9 million artifacts.  www.jefpat.maryland.gov

The Conservator examines and documents objects, performs analytical tests, prepares treatment proposals, performs conservation treatments including mechanical and chemical treatment, package or mount artifacts for transport, storage or display, and submits full reports of all activities, thus fulfilling contractual obligations and providing revenue generation for the Conservation Program of the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory.

Position duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Conservation Surveys: Carry out condition and conservation surveys for revenue generating projects to determine conservation priorities. 
  • Documentation and Photography: Record technical information into the conservation database for the purposes of producing Conservation Reports for clients. Take before and after treatment photographs as part of the Conservation Report submittal.    
  • Artifact Treatment: Carry out passive and interventive conservation treatments, including but not limited to mechanical cleaning, desalination, structural fills, environmental packaging and reconstruction. Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with the American Institute of Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
  • Technical Monitoring: Perform quantitative tests throughout chemically interventive treatments such as vacuum freeze drying, desalination and PEG impregnation.
  • X-radiography/Analytical Testing: X-ray artifacts in conjunction with conservation surveys or as needed to perform specific conservation treatments. Perform material characterization tests to assist archaeologists and curators in their research of artifacts or to identify materials to determine appropriate conservation treatments.

Board members serve for four-year terms and must be registered members of the SHA to be considered. Elected members must remain actively registered members during their entire board term and must physically attend three out of the four annual Board meetings held during the SHA conference (two out of four meetings for international members). Board members are expected to contribute actively to the organization, participate in the ACUA’s various committees, and serve as mentors during the annual ACUA mentorship initiative.

Please note that ALL scholarship applications are due annually on March 31st (except CMAUCH applications).

Support for developing education at Masters, Doctoral and Post Doctoral levels is offered by the Foundation in conjunction with a variety of international academic institutions (see below) to students and scholars from the region (Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria and Egypt).

The Foundation also offers a PhD scholarship to enable students from the region to undertake doctoral research in maritime archaeology at a university of their choice.

Successful candidates must demonstrate a genuine interest in maritime archaeology and would be expected to develop the subject in their home country upon completion of their studies.
