The Education & Programs Manager role is to continuously work in advancing the exhibitions, education and programs and establishing deep connections between the Museum, its non-profit Mission, and the Community. In addition, the EPM works to secure a sustainable future that includes increasing revenue,
strengthening reserves, and creating long-term sustainability. Supports the strategy, goals and plans of the Organization and Interpretive Division (ID).

This position works with the Director of Interpretation and other departments to design, create, and implement programs and exhibits for the benefit of the whole organization.

The Museum’s mission is to preserve, present, and keep alive the stories of the Nation’s oldest Port, as symbolized by our working St. Augustine Lighthouse.

We partner with a Maritime Archaeological Research program to study shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources. Programs focus on Regional and worldwide maritime history, military history, historic preservation, aids-to navigation, boatbuilding, artifact conservation, and our connections to many others through the sea.

Senior Maritime Heritage Officer

The Senior Maritime Heritage Officer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of Maritime Heritage projects, programs and policies to support the identification, protection, management, conservation and interpretation of South Australia’s maritime and underwater cultural heritage. The role also contributes to the effective management of maritime and terrestrial archaeological investigations in SA, and manages Heritage SA’s archaeological store and associated facilities.

The role provides leadership and specialist advice to support the effective administration of the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1981 (SA) and the Australian Government Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018.​

Contract: This is a full time, ongoing position.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate or post-graduate qualification in Maritime Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management and/or Conservation is essential.
  • Recognised diving qualifications and extensive diving experience is essential.
  • A current diving medical certification is essential, or the ability to obtain it.
  • A current commercial diving certification A or ‘Dive Master’ qualification is desirable.
  • A Coxswain’s licence is essential (or be prepared to obtain).

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is delighted to invite applications for a three-year international PhD studentship fully-funded by the Honor Frost Foundation.

The PhD scholarship is tenable for a maximum of three years, commencing January 2022, at an annual stipend of £16,000 with an additional travel fund of £1,000 per annum. Tuition fees will also be paid directly to the University at the appropriate fee rate.

The Studentship

We are looking for a PhD proposal that sets out to identify ways in which marine heritage can be part of ethical, inclusive and sustainable development in the eastern Mediterranean. The approach should consider the role marine heritage can play in helping to address the challenges in the region.

We invite applications from any discipline including, but not limited to, archaeology (maritime and terrestrial), anthropology, coastal management, cultural heritage, digital humanities, development law, environmental science, ocean science, museum studies, history and visual arts. While proposals can come from any discipline or perspective, they MUST include Marine Cultural Heritage as a resource that can inform solutions to present day challenges at the core of their approach. Proposals can consider the eastern Mediterranean as a whole or be focussed on one or a range of countries in the region.

Proposals should aim to identify the ways in which marine heritage can be seen to be an asset to sustainable development. They should demonstrate how marine heritage, and the data set it can provide, has an important role to play in evidence-based decision-making across the coastal and marine sectors. This could include informing Blue Economy initiatives such as heritage tourism, coastal and offshore development projects, coastal management, climate change mitigation, fisheries management, as well as marine ecosystem conservation, marine spatial planning, policymaking and ocean governance more widely.

The PhD scholarship requires a good 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) and a Masters degree in any related discipline (see above).

Underwater Archaeological Expedition, St. Eustatius

The Shipwreck Survey, in cooperation with the St. Eustatius Center for Archaeological Research (SECAR), is organizing an underwater archaeological expedition on St. Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean, from July 2 to 16, 2022.

St. Eustatius, a tiny island in the northeastern Caribbean, was the busiest port in the Americas in the late eighteenth century and played an instrumental role in supplying arms and ammunition to the rebels during the Revolutionary War. The island is believed to have the densest concentration of archaeological sites of any area of comparable size in the New World, and is dotted with the remains of sugar plantations, cemeteries, old warehouses, fortifications, and marine structures. The waters surrounding the island are home to an estimated 200 shipwreck sites. Nowadays St. Eustatius is relatively quiet and undeveloped. It has a population of some 3,500 people. There are no large resorts, casinos, night clubs, or crowds of tourists. Instead, the island is a hidden gem with friendly people, little to no crime, beautiful national parks, and a laid-back atmosphere.

The 2022 summer expedition builds on our successful 2019 program, during which we surveyed some of the more remote parts of the waters around St. Eustatius. It will focus on discovering and documenting unknown shipwrecks and other submerged archaeological sites through extensive underwater surveys. We will then document these using a variety of techniques. Documentary research will complement the field work and provide context to our findings.

Diving during the expedition will be truly ‘off the beaten path’; we will go to places that no one has ever been before and see things that no diver has ever seen. That also means we will be diving further offshore and in deeper waters – the diving will be a bit more advanced than during our regular field school. We therefore require participants to have at minimum an Advanced Open Water certification, 25 dives of experience, and be certified to dive with Enriched Air (this is an easy 1-day course that can also be done on the island). You are more than welcome to sign up for the program if you do not yet possess the required dive experience and certifications, as long as you meet the requirements at the start of the program.

Participants will be completely immersed in Caribbean history and archaeology through various presentations, workshops, and site visits. Interested participants will have the opportunity to work on, and co-author, a publication on the research results. ROYAL SAVAGE WRECK AND RECONSTRUCTION MODELS

The Naval History & Heritage Command (NHHC) Underwater Archaeology Branch (UA) requires a wooden scale model of the remaining timbers and planks from the wreck of Revolutionary War-era schooner Royal
Savage. The wreck remains have been 2D documented, 3D scanned, and virtually reassembled by NHHC-UA. The next step is a physical scaled wooden model of the wreck timbers. The wreck model will be used to confirm
and solidify the virtual reassembly, develop a plan to reassemble the actual conserved wreck timbers for exhibit, and, since little to no information survived about the construction of the ship, the model will add to the historical
record and understanding of naval shipbuilding of the era.

In addition to supporting the UA mission to study, preserve, and protect the Navy’s shipwrecks, the model supports the broader NHHC initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War and the founding of the U.S. Navy in 2026.

If funding is available in later fiscal years, a second objective is to develop and build a scaled wooden reconstruction model of the schooner as it was during the Revolutionary War.

This will be used for exhibit, archeological research and interpretation, outreach, and education.

he University of Delaware (UD) School of Marine Science and Policy invites applications specializing in remotely sensed underwater spatial data analysis for a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellowship. The Fellow will conduct research projects that assist the DPAA mission to provide the fullest possible accounting for the nation’s missing personnel from past conflicts.

The DPAA will provide project oversight, policies, procedures, and templates for all research projects. The priorities of these projects will be determined by the DPAA. Regular updates will be provided back to the DPAA, with occasional updates to other relevant parties.

The Fellow’s projects will include, but not be limited to, post-mission data processing and large-scale GIS projects. This will involve analyzing archival and previously collected field data (side scan sonar, multibeam, camera, magnetometer, and other sources) from Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), as well as towed and vessel-mounted instruments, using processing software and other GIS applications to identify possible MIA-associated aircraft wreckage and other targets.

Major Responsibilities:

The Fellow will identify, analyze and process information on MIA-associated sites via multiple sources (examples follow).
• Leads and data sources identified by DPAA and assigned to the Postdoc for further development.
• Leads and data sources cultivated by the Fellow through personal, professional, and institutional networks of historians, curators, genealogists, veterans organizations, and surviving family members. These efforts will be facilitated by other researchers at UD and partner organizations.
• Leads and data sources identified by other researchers contributing to the larger project.
• Internal data sources previously collected by UD.

The Fellow will catalog and store all data and other material collected, or produced, by the partnership on an institution-owed computer, backed up with a secure cloud-based account, or hard drive. The Fellow will follow DPAA guidance on naming conventions, database fields, and best practices in order to ensure that research procedures and protocols conform to those used by the DPAA, and the Department of Defense (DOD) generally.

The Fellow will report directly to the DPAA under the supervision of Dr. Mark Moline, who will serve as the project liaison to both the University and DPAA. The Fellow will not have any mandatory teaching or grading responsibilities but will be encouraged to teach one course per year related to job responsibilities. The Fellow will engage with external entities and outreach activities as approved by the DPAA.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in underwater archelogy, geography, history, oceanography, or a closely related field, with demonstrated strengths in analysis of sonar data, geographic information systems, and/or database management.

Experience with ArcGIS required. Experience with Sonarwiz, Hypack, and ArcGIS Python scripting preferred.

The University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL) seeks a historian to serve as its Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Partner Fellow.  The position is funded for two years and requires residency at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

The DPAA Research Partner Fellow at UNL will leverage the University’s assets to serve the Agency by conducting historical research and analysis related to U.S. personnel losses in the twentieth century.  Under supervision and guidance from Agency staff, the UNL Fellow’s primary work responsibilities will include conducting oral history interviews for an internal archive, in addition to overseeing a large-scale digital humanities project and other research projects as assigned by DPAA.

The Fellow is expected to maintain a presence on campus. While teaching is not required, the Fellow will be permitted to teach one course per calendar year and will be encouraged to manage an internship program, mentor students, and encourage student learning through engagement with their DPAA projects. UNL seeks a person who, in concert with DPAA, actively engages with the UNL community and other local communities to raise awareness about issues related to the identification of unaccounted-for remains of American service personnel from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle Eastern wars.

Strong writing, data collection, and analysis skills, along with an ability to collaborate with others, are required for this position.  Experience conducting oral histories and with digital history is preferred. Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as an Agency-wide and cross-organizational (HJF-DPAA) conduit for defined programmatic partnership planning and budgeting issues. Respond to all requests/inquiries within 48 hours of receipt.

  7. Monitor project implementation, transition, underlying information/financial mechanisms, and project life-cycle assessments to ensure defined programmatic initiatives are met.
  8. Assist with resolving funding or plan discrepancies through investigation, critical analysis, and collaborative problem-solving.
  9. Prepare programmatic reporting capturing annual metrics, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities pursuant to PI’s planning and budgeting endeavors.
  10. Shape and improve appropriate success metrics and targets, utilizing input from internal and external stakeholders to measure quality, efficiency, and overall process improvement.

Experience with STEM, interdisciplinary engagement, and collaboration methods and programs desired. Demonstrated ability to carry to completion complex projects involving multiple organizations, on time, on budget, while meeting planned objectives. Able to work well independently as well as in a team environment. Experience in archeology-related projects desired.
