ASI expands training programme in underwater archaeology
Officials and faculty members working in archaeology, with a reasonable ability to swim, are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is 26 May.
https://asi.nic.in/admin/whatsnew/download/751
NEW DELHI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has launched an initiative to train archaeologists in the specialised field of underwater archaeology and has reached out to archaeology departments, museum authorities, and institutions engaged in exploration and research across various states, inviting them to participate in its training programme.
The training is aimed at enhancing expertise and building capacity in underwater archaeology, which involves the study of submerged sites, artefacts, and landscapes linked to human activity beneath bodies of water.
Professor Alok Tripathi, Additional Director General and head of ASI’s Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW), has written to the directors of the concerned departments and institutions informing them about the upcoming training session.
Officials and faculty members working in archaeology, with a reasonable ability to swim, are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is 26 May.
The theoretical component of the programme will be held in the first week of July at the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Institute of Archaeology in Greater Noida.
Following the recent revival of the UAW, the ASI is focused on training the next generation of archaeologists in underwater exploration techniques. In his letter, Professor Tripathi emphasised the goal of strengthening India’s underwater archaeological capabilities. The first batch of trainees completed the programme in March.
Those who complete the upcoming training may be involved in ongoing research at key submerged sites along the Gujarat coast, including the ancient sites of Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka—locations associated with Lord Krishna, now lying beneath the sea.
In his letter, Professor Tripathi said that with the initiative, the ASI aims “to build capacity in the field of underwater \[archaeology] and strengthen underwater activities in India.”
The Wing was established in 2001 and, since then, it has conducted explorations at at least 11 sites in the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, Ariyankuppam river, and Loktak Lake in Manipur. The division had remained non-operational for a long period.
Take a Dive (Live) in NOAA’s Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary
https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/news/2025/take-a-dive-in-lake-ontario-national-marine-sanctuary.html
Starting next week, the public is invited to join NOAA virtually and be among the first to explore never-before-seen shipwrecks in Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. During the expedition, NOAA scientists and partners will deploy a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) outfitted with a high-definition camera and other technologies to survey and document the sanctuary’s shipwrecks.
From May 18 through May 25, anyone with an internet connection can ride along as a team of scientists and maritime archaeologists narrate the mission in real time. The sanctuary features an extraordinary collection of 63 known shipwrecks and one known submerged aircraft, among the best preserved in the world, discovered over decades by local recreational scuba divers and shipwreck explorers.
The shipwrecks, such as the steel steam barge, Roberval, that foundered while carrying lumber in September 1916, embody more than two centuries of the nation’s maritime history. The dives will reveal many details that add to our understanding of the past, as well as the identities and fates of the sanctuary’s shipwrecks.
“This expedition is a remarkable opportunity for our scientists and for the sanctuary, combining state-of-the-art marine imaging and a remotely operated vehicle to document some of the best preserved shipwrecks in the world, right here on Eastern Lake Ontario,” said Ben Ioset, chief scientist for the expedition. “This project will greatly advance the sanctuary’s ability to not only protect these historic shipwrecks, but to interpret their significance to the public.”

CFP: Conservation and Restoration of Metal Artifacts
https://www.mdpi.com/journal/heritage/special_issues/ETFUP89M80
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The last decade has seen extensive research focus on implementation of a number of spectroscopic, electrochemical and imaging techniques, green materials and technologies, digital tools and methods for the conservation and restoration of metal artifacts. Both terrestrial and marine metal artifacts are complicated to understand their original metal alloy composition, corrosion layers, and stability after excavation or treatment. Routine practices and materials used for the storage, treatment, protection, display, and transport of these artifacts are today deemed either as not safe or with a great impact on the environment. There is a concerted effort by conservation professionals to understand the carbon footprint of the materials they use in their practices so as to help make better choices to reduce their impact on the environment.
The goal of this Special Issue is to collect papers (original research articles and review papers) to give insights about these new applications with the aim to better understand the alloy compositions and corrosion matrix of metal artifacts from different environments, new materials or technologies for the remedial conservation of metal artifacts, new materials or methods for storage, display, or transport of metal artifacts, in situ conservation of metal artifacts.
This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:
- Museum environment and climate for metal artifacts;
- Green materials and technologies for conservation and restoration of metal artifacts;
- Non-invasive portable analytical techniques for in situ analysis and diagnosis of metal alloys and surfaces, as well as the monitoring of metals artifacts in their surrounding environment;
- In situ conservation of metal artifacts;
- Characterization studies of metal artifacts including corrosion matrix.
We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.
