FELLOWSHIP, GRANT AND SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Naval History and Heritage Command, Department of the Navy, is offering the following competitive incentives to pursue original work in the history of the United States Navy for the academic year 2013-2014.

The Rear Admiral John D. Hayes Pre-doctoral Fellowship in U.S. Navy History.
The fellowship includes a stipend of $10,000 for the fellowship year (September 2013-June 2014) plus a travel grant for travel twice to the command’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, not on active duty in the armed forces; be enrolled in a recognized graduate school; have completed requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation by June 30, 2013; and have an approved dissertation topic in the field of U.S. naval history.

The grant of up to $2,500 is intended to assist a graduate student in the research and writing of U.S. naval history in fulfillment of the requirements of a master’s or doctoral degree by helping to defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and document duplication related to the research process for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation. Applicants must be citizens of the United States enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program in history or closely related discipline in a recognized graduate school.

The Vice Admiral Edwin B. Hooper Research Grant.
The grant of up to $2,500 is intended to assist a scholar in the research or writing of a book or article by helping to defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and document duplication, related to the research process. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and hold a Ph.D. degree from an accredited university, awarded no later than March 31, 2013.

The Samuel Eliot Morison Naval History Scholarship.
The scholarship provides a $5,000 cash award to one active duty commissioned officer of the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps with demonstrated leadership potential and high academic qualifications who is already pursuing graduate study in history, international relations, or a related field. The award is to help pay for expenses related to research, travel, and the purchase of books or other educational materials.

The Foundation will fund and assist worthwhile projects that will enrich mankind’s understanding of the aquatic environment and encourage sensitivity to and protection of the delicate ecological balance of underwater life. The Foundation will also fund worthwhile projects to increase understanding of sport diving physics and physiology that will benefit the general diving public and add to the scientific understanding of man’s relationship and ability to survive in the underwater environment. The PADI Foundation is an IRC Section 501 (c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization. It is a separate and distinct organization, corporately unrelated to PADI, Inc. and its affiliates, but funded through International PADI, Inc..

The individual selected for this position will: * Lead and conduct technical studies to inventory, assess and characterize heritage resources and cultural landscapes.  

*Conduct regulatory oversight of activities that may impact maritime heritage resources. * Develop and coordinate education, outreach, and science activities related to maritime heritage. *Carry out the policies and purposes of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act, relevant Presidential Proclamations and Executive Orders. *Conduct underwater research, including scuba diving and/or use of specialized underwater research technology. *Conduct scuba diving investigations of maritime heritage resources and conduct remote sensing and remotely operated vehicle surveys as appropriate in support of this work. *Conduct historical research to document historic resources in and around the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. *Coordinates the preparation and submission of site nomination forms for the National Register of Historic Places (includes properties) in coordination with state and site managers and partner agencies.

Any research project at postgraduate level with a hydrographic component is allowed. Applications include hydrography, dredging, oil & gas, ports & harbours, renewables, environmental surveys, underwater archaeology and geo-sciences. The field work should not exceed two weeks and must be performed in Europe. The project (including report) must be finished by 30 September 2013.

The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program provides support for independent graduate-level studies in oceanography, marine biology, or maritime archaeology (including all science, engineering, social science and resource management of ocean and coastal areas), particularly to women and minorities. Individuals who are U.S. citizens and are applying to or have been accepted to a graduate program at a U.S. accredited institution may apply. Prospective scholars do not need to be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application, but must be admitted to a graduate level program in order to be awarded this scholarship. Scholarship selections are based on academic excellence, letters of recommendations, research and career goals, and financial need. Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative and term grade point average of 3.5 and maintain full-time student status for every term, and for the duration of their award. Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships may provide, subject to appropriations, yearly support of up to $42,000 per student (a 12-month stipend of $30,000 in addition to an education allowance of up to $12,000), and up to $10,000 of support for a four to six week program collaboration at a NOAA facility. Completion of one (1) program collaboration is required for every Doctoral scholarship award, with a second recommended, but not required. For Master’s degree level scholars, completion of program collaboration is strongly recommended, but is not required. A maximum of $94,000 may be provided to Master degree students (up to 2 years of support and one program collaboration opportunity) and up to $188,000 may be provided to Doctoral students (up to 4 years of support and two program collaboration opportunities). Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program recipients will be required to participate in a NOAA Orientation Training to meet with Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) staff at a date and location to be determined during the month of either July or August, 2013. If scholarships have not been awarded before this mandatory training, recipients may be required to incur pre-award costs that will be reimbursed after award funds have been issued. The program collaboration opportunity is designed to allow scholars to participate in research activities for four to six weeks at a field office of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, or other NOAA program offices. Federal support for the program collaboration may be used toward allowable costs such as: travel to and from the NOAA facility, housing, per diem, laboratory costs, research vessel support, and consumables while conducting research at the NOAA facility. Scholars are required to provide their own health insurance coverage during the program collaboration. Master’s degree level scholars must identify their program collaboration in the first year, and Doctoral scholars must identify their program collaboration within the first two years. Approval from NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries is required prior to embarking on the program collaboration. The University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship (2013-14) in marine environmental history, broadly conceived. Applicants should have interdisciplinary interests but may specialize in historical or political ecology or geography, cultural, contemporary, or environmental history, or the histories of science, art, or literature. The fellowship will be part of a temporary research center in marine environmental history funded through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s John E. Sawyer seminar series, which supports collaborative and comparative scholarship on the “historical and cultural sources of contemporary developments.” The fellow will not teach courses, but will assist in the organization of public events, study groups, and symposia, as well as the production of publications related to the center’s activities.
