The course should be geared for a general, non-anthropology major, lower division student audience. Images of our sunken past – shipwrecks loaded with treasure, mysterious sunken cities, encounters with terrible sea creatures – surround us, but how much do we actually know about what lies beneath the sea Exploring the watery world through the lenses of anthropology and archaeology allows us to interrogate the evidence of the past in ways that provide us with so much more than just treasure” from shipwrecks – we can ask questions about and critically examine what we know concerning population movements; technology; globalization; warfare; human triumph, suffering, and even death; cultural interactions; and about the paths of history that have brought us to where we are now. Informative for both anthropology majors and non-majors alike, this course is designed to investigate and understand fundamental concepts and questions answerable through anthropology and archaeology, explored through a range of case studies intended to highlight both what exists under the sea and what we can learn from our tumultuous history with it.
