The Marzamemi field school is an archaeological excavation project that takes place off the coast of Sicily. Students will participate in underwater excavation and object conservation at the site of the so-called “Church Wreck,” a ship that sank while carrying prefabricated architectural pieces for the construction of a church in the 6th century AD. In 2019, this field school will be accepting applications for diving and non-diving positions. 

2 Research Fellows in Maritime Archaeology

There are two research fellow positions available, one for a 2 year fixed term contract and the other for a 5 year fixed term contract.

This project is funded by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, and aims to document the maritime archaeology of the maritime and coastal regions of the Middle East and North Africa (hence MarEAMENA).

You will be undertaking research in accordance with the a remote sensing and data collection project across the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) regions under the supervision of the award holder. You will also be involved with ground survey and training programmes delivered annually across the project regions. You will also provide support to the project PI’s in successful project deliverance and developing the projects objectives.

The Maryland Historical Trust is seeking candidates for its 2019 Summer Internship in Archeology. Interns serve a maximum of 400 hours over a period of 10 consecutive weeks to begin on or about May 20, 2019. Current graduate students in anthropology/archeology are preferred; students currently enrolled in or who have recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate program in anthropology/archeology or other closely related field are encouraged to apply.

The intern will work under the general supervision of the Chief Archeologist and time will be divided between office/laboratory and field work in support of the Trust’s terrestrial and maritime archeology programs.

Interns will receive a total amount not to exceed $6000.00 paid in bi-weekly increments based on the number of hours worked at a rate of $15.00 per hour.

Successful completion of an archeological field school or equivalent and familiarity with ArcGIS are required.

Maritime Archaeology Scholarship

The MaP Fund is calling for expressions of Interest from prospective applicants for a scholarship that will enable an individual to study for a Master of Maritime Archaeology degree (18 months) at Flinders University in 2019/20 (starting in March 2019 or July 2019). Applicants must:

• have completed a Bachelor degree in Archaeology or closely related discipline,
• be eligible for entry into the MMA program according to the requirements of Flinders University (see here), and
• be a resident in Asia or the Pacific region (not including the USA, Australia or New Zealand).

Citizens of ASEAN nations and those living and working in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam are particularly encouraged to express interest.

Conservation Intern

The Mariners’ Museum and Park is offering a 10-week summer internship to
conduct material analysis and conservation assessment of the Spanish
fishing boat *Isabel* (1925) within the Institution’s Collection of 150
small craft from 42 countries. The twenty-two foot long vessel is
constructed from wood and decorated with traditional folk paintings and
other ornamental elements. At present the object has condition issues which
include: structural damage, separation of framing components, and
delamination of paint across multiple surfaces. The internship will focus
on the inventorying and identification of component parts, the
characterization of paint layers and fiber-based materials, and the
identification of wood species of structural elements to enable the
development of a conservation treatment plan.
Techniques available to conduct analysis and imaging during the internship
include photogrammetry, UV-Vis Fluorescence, IR, RTI, PXRF, FT-IR, and PLM
and LM.

Placement dates for the internship are between June 3 and August 16, 2019

Applying candidates should have a minimum of one year of conservation
graduate school training.

In this position you will serve as an Archeologist with the Submerged Resources Center (SRC) with duties consisting primarily of underwater archeological documentation and analysis and marine remote sensing survey and documentation of submerged cultural resources throughout the National Park System and with partner agencies on a state, national and international level. Because of equipment intensive field operations are done under the water, incumbent will be around water bodies involved in diving and boating activities. Because almost all field operations involve work in parks, you will be expected to travel extensively (e.g. up to seven months per years) and sometimes for long durations (e.g. 90 days or more). You will be expected to engage in diving operations, classified by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) as hazardous duty.
