The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar (ICUA Zadar) is once again organising courses in the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds to be held in Zadar, Croatia in the period from March – April 2020.

This international course is targeted to the practical and theoretical training of candidates for independent work in the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds.

The courses will consist of practical work under the supervision of a mentor at the workshops of the ICUA Zadar. Candidates will have the opportunity to select work on the various materials treated at the three main workshops that deal with metal, ceramic and glass, and organic finds. Training will be provided by ICUA Zadar staff, pursuant to the course programme manual and the standards valid for the ICUA/UNESCO advanced course staged in 2011.

Candidates can choose from a number of modules. We are planning a one-month Advanced Course that can be staged in one of the three main workshops, or a two-week Introductory Course that will involve work in all three workshops.

At the end of the course candidates will take an exam on the theoretical and practical segments, after which they will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have passed our Centre’s course for specialised conservators/restorers of underwater archaeological finds.

Waterfront Research Historian

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/alexandria/jobs/2686181/research-historian

If you are interested in working for the vibrant City of Alexandria, we invite qualified candidates to apply for our Waterfront Research Historian position located in the Archaeology Division in the Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA).

An Overview
The Waterfront Research Historian will compile, develop, and research a comprehensive waterfront history study. In 2010 the City of Alexandria initiated a comprehensive plan to redevelop its historic waterfront. The Waterfront Small Area Plan includes the construction of a promenade, parks, and amenities in conjunction with flood mitigation efforts that will reshape the city’s waterfront, which in turn has spurred private development. The waterfront history study will be a critical document towards understanding and mitigating the impacts of new waterfront construction while also providing a detailed examination of how the waterfront evolved from a small hamlet to full-fledged and later industrial port city. This study is also part of fulfilling the Archaeological Protection Code, administered by Alexandria Archaeology. Passed in 1989, the code requires that City Archaeologists review all ground-disturbing projects to ensure that information about the past is not lost as a result of development. In 2018 alone, City Archaeologists reviewed more than 1,300 site plans and building permits as part of an integrated, community archaeology program. The work of the Waterfront Historian is performed under the direct supervision of the City Archaeologist in coordination with the staff Archaeologists, the City Historian, and under the general supervision of the Director of OHA.

What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have a thorough knowledge of 18th and 19th century regional history as well as experience with archival records and primary and secondary sources that pertain to Alexandria and the broader region. Specifically, we seek proven experience with chain-of-title research and in using Geographic Information System (GIS) software to map and visualize spatial data. The job requires an individual with the ability to: communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; create publishable, compelling and sound scholarship on urban and African American history; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, employees of the City of Alexandria, and the community. The work will take place in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and at local and regional archives.

CHERISH is seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced companies or individuals to tender for the provision of dive services to undertake, assist and support the underwater archaeological objectives of the CHERISH project. The services of suitably qualified and suitably experienced Archaeological Dive Contractors and underwater photogrammetric specialists are therefore sought by the CHERISH project. In this regard CHERISH may establish a Multi-Party Framework Agreement for the provision of Archaeological Dive Services. The tender has been designed to facilitate the setting up of a number of restricted panels from which dive services can be drawn down. Please note that each category of service provider may not be required for each individual project. Each wreck will be the subject of an intital 7-14 day survey and recording expedition. It is then envisioned a number of monitoring trips, not encompassing more than 3 will take place over the course of the following two years.
