Wessex Archaeology has one of the largest teams specialising in coastal and marine archaeology in the UK with over 30 staff. SUBMERGED RESOURCES ARCHAEOLOGICAL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT METHODS CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT

Archaeological Damage Investigation & Assessment has scheduled an offering of its’ five-day Submerged Resources Archaeological Damage Assessment Methods Class in Houston, Texas, Monday, May 7, 2012 through Friday, May 11, 2012. The class will be hosted by Geoscience Earth and Marine Services.

This class is open to all professional archaeologists. (Law enforcement officers, prosecuting attorneys, and agency managers who have an interest in archaeological damage assessment may sit in on the class during the final two days with no tuition fee.)  The registration deadline for the class is close of business on Friday, April 13 2012.

The Albanian Center for Marine Research is offering a scientific diving course for the 2012 field season. This course complies with the 100+hour American Academy of Underwater Science standards. Students will gain diverse diving experience, participate in ongoing underwater research, and learn diving theory and methods in classroom sessions taught by experts in the field from institutions including East Carolina University, the Albanian Institute of Archaeology, and RPM Nautical Foundation. Almost daily dives over the two-week course will expose students to a variety of habitat types found along the southern Albanian coastline, as well as the best practices for conducting hypothesis-based research, environmental survey, and archaeological methods. The diving course also offers a necessary component to participate in other ACMR field school offerings.

The Great Lakes Historical Society’s Peachman Lake Erie Shipwreck Research Center (GLHS/PLESRC) and the Maritime Archaeological Survey Team (MAST) will be conducting their annual Nautical Archaeology Workshop April 14-15, 2012 at the Toledo Maritime Center (future home of the National Great Lakes Maritime Museum) 1701 Front Street, Toledo, Ohio followed by skills practice dives May 19 or 20 at White Star Quarry in Gibsonburg, Ohio. The workshop teaches divers and non-divers why underwater archaeology is important, how they can impact and protect Ohio’s wrecks, techniques they will use during shipwreck surveys and much, much more.

5)  The Guam Preservation Trust extends an invitation to participate in a maritime archaeology field school to be conducted on Guam from 16 to 27 April 2012. The aims of the field school are to further develop skills and implement some relevant activities on a range of maritime and underwater cultural heritage sites in Guam. The activities will include the recording and documenting of some traditional fish weirs (gigao) and learning about Chamorro customs and cultural practices.  The second part of the field school will involve diving and the recording of some underwater sites (primarily World War II sites) in the warm, clear waters of Guam and participating in a workshop on underwater cultural heritage tourism in Guam.

There are no academic perquisites but scuba diving qualifications, experience and a diving medical is required.

Conservation Manager, Mary Rose trust, closes 12 March

The Mary Rose Trust are looking to appoint a conservation manager.

The Mary Rose Trust is responsible for the care of the only recovered 16th Century warship, the Mary Rose, and her unique collection of 19,000 artefacts. A state-of-the-art new museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will open later this year. It will represent the very best in 21st Century architecture and construction and provide a beautiful and secure environment for the finest collection of 16th Century artefacts in the world.
We are looking for a Conservation Manager to be responsible for a small dedicated team who care for the ship and her contents and to oversee the final stage of conservation of the hull (controlled air drying). You will ensure the provision of specialist advice, training, guidance and services in archaeological conservation for the Mary Rose Trust, as well as stimulating integrated research and publication. You will develop best practice and help raise awareness of our maritime heritage by promoting and widening access to the practice and benefits of archaeological conservation.

Along with a substantial track record of relevant work experience, research and publication, you will need a qualification such as a post-graduate degree (or equivalent experience) in archaeological conservation or chemistry or materials science. Comfortable with managing multi-disciplinary teams, you must have a genuine talent for developing and encouraging people.

Using the national method for Historic Seascape Characterisation (HSC), the project will undertake a GIS-based characterisation of the study area, including adjacent waters and coastal zones. Under the direction of a doctoral candidate from the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology, volunteer underwater archaeological fieldwork experience is available. The project will involve diving in one (or more, per preference or availability) of five reservoirs* in South Lanarkshire, and the Glendevon Reservoir (Perth and Kinross) to survey archaeological sites that were once terrestrial, but are now submerged by the reservoir waters. Site survey will include the Kirkhope Tower, cairns, burnt mounds and several Mesolithic sites. These sites were previously recorded by the Biggar Archaeology Group before rising water levels made them inaccessible to the Group. As such, the dives will be relatively shallow, maxing out at 20M. Opportunities for further and deeper exploratory survey will take place on the last days of each reservoir dive period.

Methods used will include underwater photography, underwater survey (basic measuring and recording using a grid system), and drawing. Each day will consist of three dive teams (of two divers) making three controlled dives to gather data. Divers will ideally be paired with a person of greater/lesser archaeological diving experience to enhance both efficiency and a positive learning/teaching environment.
