You will serve as a Staff Curator (Museum Management) in the Conservation Branch, Collections Division of NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND.

  • You will perform work conserving, preserving, storing, accounting for, shipping of historic properties in the Navy’s Heritage Asset collections.
  • You will interact with the NHHC Enterprise conservators, museum curators, and exhibit specialists to identify special concerns or needs to ensure conserved artifacts are displayed properly to avoid damage.
  • You will perform a variety of routine and special technical duties in connection with the conservation, physical maintenance, preservation, and inventory of the collections.
  • You will serve as a subject matter expert for organic and inorganic artifacts in the collection.
  • You will prepare reports, documenting the conditions of artifacts, treatment options, and methods of preservation/conservation.
  • You will use various methods to examine objects including non-destructive testing.
  • You will adhere to the professional Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
  • You will answer technical and general inquiries on historical properties in the collection undergoing conservation and preservation procedures.
  • You will participate in outreach and in tours of the laboratory.
  • You will prepare and deliver presentations and lectures on artifact conservation procedures

he Erie Maritime Museum, located on the shores of Lake Erie, is home to the U.S. Brig Niagara, a historically accurate full-size operational replica of Oliver Hazard Perry’s flagship during the War of 1812’s Battle of Lake Erie. In addition to its public sailing program aboard that tall ship, the museum boasts engaging exhibits, living history demonstrations, special events, & other activities at its extensive Bayfront facility.
 
As the Museum Educator 2, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the museum’s educational and interpretive programs, ensuring they are based on primary and secondary source historical research and that they align with current museum teaching methodologies and curriculum standards. You will also coordinate daily front-end operations and manage the museum’s volunteer program, providing training as well as evaluation and feedback. Work is performed independently in accordance with PHMC policies and procedures and professional standards under the supervision of the Site Administrator and in cooperation with museum and PHMC staff.
 
In the role of Museum Educator 2, you will work directly with the public, educational groups, and local or regional program partners, and you will be responsible for providing support to volunteers, part-time staff, and interns who help implement the museum’s programming.
 
This is a professional museum education position requiring a knowledge of naval and/or general maritime history as well as a proven background in delivering exceptional visitor service experiences.

Historic Ships Preservation Manager

The Historic Ships Preservation Manager will interact effectively with visiting public and staff with a main focus on historic ships conservation, restoration, and repair tasks. This position reports directly to the Director of Education. The Historic Ships Preservation Manager oversees the team within and across departments to help advance the mission and vision of Independence Seaport Museum.

Hours: Full-Time; some weekends required; some evenings, holidays, and special events work may be required; may be called-in to assist with major emergencies on scheduled days off.

Qualifications:

  • Five years’ experience in marine operations, people management, ship maintenance, museum maintenance, artifact handling, building maintenance, or other similar field.
  • A strong background or interest in mechanical and maintenance fields needed.
  • Experience with safely and accurately using various tooling, both hand and power-operated.
  • Work collaboratively with a team, or independently, with initiative.
  • Effectively manage materials and provide clear, comprehensive reporting.
  • Good communications and administrative skills needed.
  • An understanding of historic preservation standards, curatorial practices, maintenance, and interpretation of artifacts or historic sites necessary.
  • Holding active automotive Driver’s License and/or Marine credentials is a plus.
  • Willingness to undertake other shipboard duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., work outside in heat and cold, safely handle ladder and staging work, operate at heights and work in confined spaces.
  • Requires knowledge of job safety practices, safe use of tools, and handling of ship maintenance materials.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervise the Shipboard Preservation Technicians and set the daily schedules for projects.
  • Perform routine duties in service to the visiting public and in maintaining the historic ships.
  • Perform routine ship keeping maintenance tasks including regular ship cleaning, snow removal, safety patrols, painting, damage control, machine and electrical maintenance, artifact handling, woodworking & steel work.
  • Delegate and manage regular cleaning and maintenance projects and tasks done by Shipboard Educators.
  • Project planning and oversight for historic ships preservation and maintenance, with the help of the Manager of Historic Ships.
  • Participate in major grant and capital projects.
  • Serve as an additional point of contact for relevant contractors, suppliers, external collaborators, and emergency personnel and oversee contractors for relevant projects.
  • Assist the Manager of Historic Ships as needed and fill in for duties when the staff are not available.
  • Develop knowledge of the history of the historic ships and work with the Shipboard Educators to deliver information to the public consistent with the museum’s mission for the ships.
  • Administers and oversees relevant budget lines and project budgets as needed.
  • Oversee volunteer or docent projects pertaining to cleaning, maintenance, and preservation and assist with the management of volunteers and contractors.

You will serve as the Deputy Director, National CG Museum, providing organizational leadership and overseeing the administrative management of the museum, including implementation of strategic objectives and organizational initiatives.

This full-time, permanent position requires a master’s degree in maritime/nautical archaeology or closely related field. Experience in geophysical data collection, processing and analyses is required, as is skill in technical writing. Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards (48 CFR 44738- 44739) and have experience conducting or supporting geotechnical investigations is ideal. The candidate also should possess project management experience working in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic Cost and Outer Continental Shelf.

Experience Requirements:

  • Proficiency working in HYPACK (or equivalent) to plan, collect, edit, and analyze magnetometer data;
  • Proficiency collecting, editing, and analyzing side scan sonar data;
  • Familiarity and some experience with collecting, processing and analyzing subbottom profiler data is a plus;
  • Must have Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications from a recognized organization (i.e., SSI, PADI, NAUI, etc.). Valid First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen Administration are a plus.
