This role is be based nationally at one of our offices, with hybrid working.

Where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home – Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth (Fort Cumberland), and Cambridge.

Home working, with occasional office visits, will also be considered.

Salary

National – £32,616 pro-rata

Cambridge – £36,078 pro-rata

What you will be doing

The Marine Planning Unit provides Historic England’s statutory and non-statutory advice to developers, consultants and regulatory authorities. We are involved in pre-application, formal decision-making processes and post-consent through our role as the only curatorial body for the English inshore and offshore marine planning areas.

As part of the Marine Planning Unit, you will take delegated responsibility for the delivery of Historic England’s advice on proposals for change in the historic environment that fall within their area of competence. You will contribute to delivery of Historic England’s corporate plan objectives, as relevant to marine development advice.

Historic England is the primary advisor for marine areas beyond local authority planning jurisdiction and as the Marine Planning Officer, you will play an important role in all stages of preparing development advice, especially the case for historic environment assessment and mitigation as part of the development consenting process and subsequent delivery.

Who we are looking for

  • Educated to degree level with a post-graduate qualification or equivalent experience relevant to marine planning and management;
  • Experience of effectively providing advice through Environmental Impact Assessment exercises;
  • Trained in the use of spatial data, analysis and presentation;
  • Knowledgeable about the historic environment as might be encountered by seabed users and developers;
  • Understanding of government policy, guidance and statutory measures for the historic environment;
  • Confidence to deal with time pressure and challenge;
  • Applies initiative and willingness to develop effective working relations.

Please note that the role:

  • May require travel to locations not serviced by public transport;
  • Requires visiting locations that may require climbing aboard vessels (large and small), to undergo travel at sea and negotiating confined spaces;
  • May require occasional participation at events and to present information at conferences requiring away stays.

The Senior Specialist’s primary responsibility is supporting the Science & Innovation Programs team programmatic needs, developing Requests for Proposals, evaluating and recommending Level 1 and Level 2 research and conservation grants, providing high-quality customer service to grantees – our National Geographic Explorers – and supporting other dynamically evolving needs across the Science and Innovation Programs team. The Senior Specialist will primarily support grants and programs in either the Ocean, Wildlife, Space, or Planetary Health focus area and will additionally provide similar services and support across other focus areas within Science and Innovation Programs as needed. The Senior Specialist should have a deep and broad curiosity about the world, proactive and collaborative mindset, a strong sense of accountability and follow-through, and willingness to take on new challenges. Through their work, the Senior Specialist will build on the Society’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

Strategy and Program Development (10%)

  • Support the team in the strategic development and adaptive management of the focus area’s portfolio.
  • Understand relevant field(s), stay networked and informed on emerging trends, and scan for gaps and opportunities in the focus area’s portfolio and on other topics as requested.
  • Assist the Science and Innovation Programs leadership in researching and scoping potential new priority areas and/or partnerships
  • Support the development of research and conservation Requests for Proposals in the designated focus area and other focus areas as assigned.
  • Participate in internal strategic discussions as well as cross-division working groups 
  • Provide programmatic support across Science and Innovation Programs.

Grant Support (25%)

  • Collaborate within and across teams to seek, evaluate, fund, and manage Level 1 and Level 2 grants and grantees within both the designated focus area and other focus areas as assigned, ensuring alignment with NGS’s strategic plan and programmatic priorities.
  • Under supervision, oversee scientific aspects of grants including development, recruitment, proposal review, developing new RFPs (requests for proposals), contributing to the definition of our science and grantmaking priorities, and coordination of internal and external expert review.
  • Develop and maintain strong, positive and empathetic relationships with prospective and active Explorers. Act as primary contact for Explorers leading Level 1 grants, and serve as an internal subject matter expert on these projects, including understanding the context in which they occur.
  • Communicate with Explorers to stay apprised of new discoveries, high profile academic publications, and/or media-friendly results that should be elevated and coordinate internally through established processes for review and amplification. 

Program Support (40%)

Includes but not limited to:

  • Identifies and interprets internal/external issues; elevates issues/inefficiencies where appropriate; recommends solutions, best practices, tools, and improvements needed; supports development and utilization of new/streamlined processes and refinement of current processes.
  • Organizes data and implements data best practices, performs research, data validation, and manipulation; works with team members to create NGS forms, reports, campaigns, and dashboards to visualize program impact; summarizes data and metrics for use in divisional reporting and analysis.
  • Assists with managing projects and schedules, notifies relevant parties of approaching deadlines and helps to keep all projects on track, including updating schedules, project tracker, and other relevant documents.
  • Supports leadership with budget creation and tracking.
  • Supports internal operations, including but not limited to assisting with contracts, legal, presentation preparation, invoices, mailings, travel and logistics, maintaining shared calendars and shared documentation, and other administrative tasks as needed.

Team, Divisional, and Organizational Collaboration (25%)

  • Develop and maintain strong positive and empathetic working relationships with other NGS divisions and external teams to maximize impact and reach.
  • Supports leadership in establishing and advancing cross-division collaborations and initiatives
  • Reviews grant and project related materials and provide approval on behalf of program to external partners, NGP and internal divisions.
  • May represent Science & Innovation at external meetings, convenings, conferences, events, etc;

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in science including one or more of the following: environmental science, biology, ocean science, engineering, space science related disciplines, or related fields required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience   

4+ years of relevant experience in one or more of the following: research, science, conservation, sustainability or related fields. Experience working on wildlife or ocean related science or conservation preferred. Experience working on programs or partnerships at a non-profit in the environment or sustainability sector is also preferred.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of the scientific method and ability to understand and evaluate technical material. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, under deadlines, with changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage tasks and responsibilities that span multiple teams.
  • Must be able to learn quickly and adapt to new situations.
  • Positive attitude with proactive approach.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with GoogleDocs suite, Microsoft Office suite, Slack, Miro and Airtable.
  • Ability to compile information from disparate sources (literature review, interviews and conversations, first-hand accounts, etc.) and produce condensed, topline messaging and/or recommendations.
  • Experience speaking in front of small and large audiences and putting together reports for many different types of audiences.

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position is $62,100 – $74,000.

Pay offered to candidates will be based on several factors including but not limited to industry-based or other relevant work experience, education, skills, certifications, and training.

Ocean Program Manager

NCEL is currently seeking an Ocean Program Manager to oversee the organization’s work on ocean and coastal policy issues. This position will regularly convene state legislators virtually and in person, travel to state capitals to organize informational events, and craft policy memos regarding ocean policy. Their work will primarily focus on sustainable offshore energy, preserving marine ecosystems, enhancing coastal resilience, and integrating environmental justice into state policy solutions. Much of this work will take place by facilitating NCEL’s Coastal Working Group of state legislators and building relationships with key partners at all levels of government. They will also track state legislation and assist state legislators in communicating their priorities to federal officials.

This role will prioritize growing NCEL’s Ocean Program as a standalone issue area and work closely with Leadership, Communications, and Development staff around strategy and vision for the future of the program. This position will be actively managing projects, deadlines, and grant deliverables and will require regular (25%) travel, averaging one or two trips per month for events and other meetings. 

The ideal candidate will be passionate about ocean topics as well as an outgoing organizer or network-builder who enjoys outreach and collaboration. They will be a growth-oriented individual who is committed to integrating environmental justice and equity concepts into policy solutions. They will have a passion for policy advancement and be highly skilled at verbal and written communication. NCEL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that empowers a nonpartisan network of state environmental leaders to protect, conserve, and improve the natural and human environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities 
Program Management and Strategy (35%)

  • Lead NCEL’s Ocean Program through strategic planning and development, program administration, and program growth.
  • Support NCEL’s internal strategy and practice on racial equity and environmental justice, advancing equity and inclusion for historically underrepresented perspectives and communities in ocean policy.
  • Collaborate with key local, state, national, and international NGO partners on educational opportunities, materials, and events.
  • Expand partnerships with federal agencies and offices with a focus on marine resources, ocean biodiversity, or offshore energy. 
  • Foster collaboration among state lawmakers, Tribal leaders, Indigenous Communities, and related organizations on coastal state policy topics that honor Tribal ocean sovereignty.
  • Prep programmatic and policy trends for participation in meetings with philanthropic partners.

Policy Analysis Research, Analysis, and Communication (25%)

  • Track and analyze ocean and justice legislative trends and share updates with NCEL members and key allies.
  • Develop materials including fact sheets and briefing books on specific issues.
  • Development of website content including legislative spotlights and blog posts related to policy developments.

Network Building, Events, and Outreach (25%)

  • Coordinate legislative working groups around ocean and justice topics.
  • Work with partner organizations to plan local events such as in-state meetings or site tours related to program work.
  • Conduct visits to state capitals during the legislative session to meet with legislators and host briefings.
  • Recruitment of state lawmakers to join the network.
  • Facilitate information-sharing and coaching among working group members, and other NCEL members.
  • Follow up with legislators after meetings and events and provide continued support.
  • Travel up to 1-2 times per month across the country to participate in or host events on behalf of NCEL.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide grant writing in support of fundraising efforts.
  • Manage program budgets and review program expenses on a monthly basis.
  • Phone, email, and in-person outreach to state legislators to support policy work.
  • Curation and dissemination of issue-specific information sheets and email alerts.
  • Connect with media outlets to amplify environmental health policy solutions.
  • Represent NCEL at advocacy coalition meetings, both virtually or in person.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in policy or political organizing at the state, federal, or community level and/or advocating for specific issues.
  • Working knowledge of policies related to coastal conservation, offshore energy, and ocean conservation.
  • Proximity to an airport and ability/willingness to travel to events across the country.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey complex information in simple terms.
  • Must have experience in Google applications and basic database management.
  • Ability to work independently with strong time management skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with underserved, overburdened, or frontline communities.
  • Experience working with elected officials and/or on campaigns.

Work Environment
This position is fully remote and full-time at 40 hours/week.
