The intern will work under the general supervision of the Chief Archaeologist and time will be divided between office/laboratory and fieldwork in support of the Trust’s terrestrial and maritime archaeology programs. Fieldwork will
take place in a variety of settings and involve use of hand tools, electronic surveying equipment, and small boats, canoes, and/or kayaks. It will include support activities associated with the Annual Tyler Bastian Field Session in Maryland Archaeology, marine geophysical and remote sensing surveys, and archaeological site visits and inspections.

Office/laboratory work is expected to include artifact sorting, washing and cataloging, records processing and filing, GIS data manipulation, and general data organization and entry tasks. Opportunities will also be available related to other aspects of the Trust’s archaeology programs, such as project review and compliance, and outreach activities.

Interns serve a maximum of 400 hours over a period of 10 consecutive weeks to begin on or about May 18, 2026. Fieldwork will require occasional work outside of normal business hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends, &
holidays), extended days, overnight travel, and camping. Office/lab work will be conducted during normal business hours.

Interns will receive a total amount not to exceed $7,200.00 paid in bi-weekly increments based on the number of hours worked at a base rate of $18.00 per hour.

Are you looking for a paid training placement in maritime archaeology? Then we would like to hear from you. We are offering two 15-day internships this summer to give those studying in relevant disciplines the opportunity to experience working in the heritage sector as part of a paid internship.

MSDS Marine are a Marine and Coastal Contractor specialising in the management, execution and support of archaeological projects in the marine environment. MSDS Marine endeavors to provide opportunities during our projects where new skills can be learnt or existing skills developed, these opportunities can be for members of the public, early career professionals or maritime archaeologists looking to broaden their experience. An internship at MSDS Marine will give you the opportunity to work alongside our archaeology professionals and learn new skills in a supportive, friendly environment.

MSDS Marine have grown steadily since they were first established in 2011 and are now a market leader in maritime archaeology in the UK. In March 2025 we were awarded the contract for the provision of services in relation to marine designation for 2025-2027 on behalf of Historic England. We have worked with Historic England on designated and undesignated wreck sites for many years and look forward to working with them on this contract to select and provide appropriate field services for the sites that are chosen for investigation. We have a strong background in engaging with and helping communities and volunteers care for marine heritage assets and look forward to working with divers and others to ensure they feel included in projects at all stages whilst ensuring positive outcomes for the heritage sites we investigate. These internships will allow participants to become involved with all aspects of the contract, including visiting diving operations and participating in surface support. 

The exact dates of placements remain to be confirmed and can be agreed with the successful applicants in due course, but it is anticipated that they will run between June and September and will involve weekend working. One placement is likely to run from the 30th June 2025.

You will be a student or recent graduate with a passion for marine heritage and be looking for experience in a real-world setting. We are looking for someone who would welcome the opportunity to work with MSDS Marine to help develop their career and knowledge.

The role will require you to undertake a range of activities including desk-based research and field visits, alongside, and supported by, the wider MSDS Marine team.

The roles require excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as some understanding of protected wreck sites in England (but don’t worry we can teach you this!). The internship will be based at the MSDS Marine Head Office in Holbrook, Derbyshire although some fieldwork away from the office will be required. Interns will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements for the office based elements of the placement and MSDS Marine will arrange and pay for travel, accommodation and subsistence during fieldwork.

Introduction
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (“MDMR”) is currently seeking an enthusiastic Historic Preservationist intern for the Office of Coastal Restoration and Resilience/Mississippi Coast National Heritage Area. The MDMR’s Mississippi Coast National Heritage Area program purpose is to enhance, conserve, and provide connectivity to cultural resources of a unique and defined area through identification, interpretation, and promotion. These cultural resources of National Heritage Areas provide authentic experiences and serve as a source of pride and identity.

The MDMR manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands, and waterfront areas to provide for the balanced commercial, recreational, educational, and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.

Scope of Work/Job Duties
The scope of work/job duties for this position will include:

  • Developing and scheduling social media content;
  • Assisting with daily administrative tasks;
  • Collaborating with staff in developing marketing strategies;
  • Assisting with archiving and researching historic collections;
  • Procuring quotes and working with vendors;
  • Assisting with outreach events; some evening and weekend work may be required;

    Minimum Qualifications
    The minimum qualifications the MDMR is seeking for the position include:
  • Education: Must possess or be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in historic preservation,
    anthropology, or history from an accredited four-year college or university. If degree is in
    progress, the candidate must have at least 32 hours of college credit. As part of the
    application, please provide a copy of your transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable).
  • Experience: Please include any training or skills related to this position in your
    application.
  • Other: Must possess a valid driver’s license (Mississippi residents must have a Mississippi
    driver’s license). MDMR will verify the driver’s license.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    The ideal candidate will have previous coursework and thorough knowledge of historic preservation. A successful candidate will have a solid understanding of different tasks and techniques required for historic preservation. The candidate should have excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position will require interaction with diverse audiences. The candidate should be comfortable presenting to small and large groups ranging in age from young
    children to older adults of all experience levels. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to implement multiple project tasks simultaneously and the ability to work effectively with others. The candidate should also have familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and various social media platforms.
    Compensation and Hours Worked
    The internship position pays $14.00 per hour and is for a maximum of 28 hours per week. The position is for up to 10 weeks, depending on the intern’s school schedule.

General Information:

The UNIQ+ program is a research internship that is for UK undergraduate students (ordinary residents) from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. It is an experience in postgraduate research, where you will join a project led by (and therefore meet and work with) research staff and graduate students, attend training skills and information sessions, and have the opportunity to take part in different events.

The internship will run from Monday 7 July to Thursday 21 August, and the selected candidate will work on a project supervised by Professor Damian Robinson and a doctoral student.

The project is titled ‘Considering Maritime Archaeology in Marine Spatial Planning.’

This project addresses the critical gap between marine science, maritime archaeology, and environmental research at a time when climate change presents unprecedented challenges to our oceans. By examining both the divergent frameworks and the absence of shared vocabulary across these disciplines, we aim to bridge these divides. The research focuses on how maritime cultural landscapes – or cultural seascapes – operate within planned marine spaces globally, exploring how maritime archaeology aligns with international biodiversity and economic objectives. Our ultimate goal is to demonstrate that integrating heritage and ecological considerations can not only enrich environmental research but also create mutual benefits across all aspects of marine spatial planning.

Interns will be involved in analyzing documents and datasets that relate to marine spatial planning (MSP) and maritime archaeology both in theory and practice. Tasks will include setting up parameters for systematic reviews, reviewing documents, and creating a database to organize the findings. Interns will also work with GIS tools to compile data and analyze it using Python. There’s also the potential to conduct interviews with leading organizations like NOAA, BOEM, DEFRA, and Natural England.

For your work, you will contribute to a journal publication and listed as a coauthor. By the end of the programme, you will have developed expertise in marine spatial planning as it relates to heritage and will gain valuable research skills. You’ll learn how to set up and run a systematic review, create a database, and work with GIS and data analysis tools.

  2. Be in the process of completing, or have already completed, your undergraduate degree at a UK or Irish university.

The Education Section of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is in search of a well-qualified, energetic, and responsible student to fill the role of Education Intern for the Summer of 2025. The intern will assist instructors with our annual Summer Science School classes to teach children in grades 1-4 about fishing, pirates, and model boats. The intern will also assist with outreach programs for youth organizations, community events, and field trip programs guided by full-time education section staff. Additional opportunities may exist for helping with work at the Bonehenge Whale Center in Beaufort.

This is a great opportunity for students pursuing a degree in various programs, including education, history, marine science, biology, museum studies, natural sciences, and cultural resources. The ideal candidate does not need to be enrolled in one of these specific programs, an interest in our museum and a desire to teach elementary age children and general audiences in informal settings is more important!

Expectations 

  • The intern must be over the age of 16 and project a good image for program participants and museum guests.
  • They should maintain a neat appearance and friendly, mature demeanor.
  • It is preferred that the intern is certified in first aid and CPR, knows how to swim, and is comfortable working outdoors.
  • Interns will need to comply with the dress code requested of class participants (i.e., closed-toe shoes, field clothes, etc.) while at work, program sites, in museum facilities, and in or near water. Presentable attire for a public museum setting is required.
  • Interns must provide their own personal materials, field clothing, appropriate footwear, water bottle, etc.
  • Interns are responsible for providing their own means of transportation to and from work.

Schedule

Length of Internship: 8 weeks, June 17, 2025 – August 8, 2025.

Work Schedule: Part time, Monday – Friday, typically 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., days and hours will vary depending on workload, averaging 20 hours per week.
