The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA), category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, in Zadar, is organizing Advanced Underwater Archaeology Course. The course will take place in the Zadar area, from 28th May to 2nd June 2018.

The course will consist of theoretical and practical (hands on) instruction in techniques of underwater archaeological excavation, recording, data processing and the use of new technologies in underwater documentation. Archaeologists from the ICUA and guest lecturers will conduct theoretical lessons. Practical instruction will take place in the context of underwater archaeological surveys of ancient shipwrecks in the area surrounding Zadar and will teach participants what it means to be part of an underwater archaeological excavation team.

The course is aimed at archaeologists who have diving experience and at least some basic experience of practical underwater archaeology. It is designed to provide participants with advanced skills and training in underwater archaeology and basic project planning.

KUDAR-ANAMED Joint Fellowship in Maritime Archaeology

The Koç University Mustafa V. Koç Maritime Archaeology Research Center (KUDAR) and Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) joint fellowship will support one post-doctoral scholar specializing in Maritime Archaeology or a closely-related topic for the 2018 – 2019 nine-month academic year (September 17^th to June 15^th). The successful applicant is required to reside in Istanbul during the fellowship period, to devote his or her time to a proposed research project, and to deliver two lectures on their original research.  The fellowship provides one round-trip ticket to Istanbul, accommodation at ANAMED in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu neighborhood, five meals a week, and a monthly stipend. While in residence, the successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a limited research budget, the ANAMED seminar and study rooms, library resources within the Koç University system, and access to nearby research centers such as the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, the Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes, and the Instituto Italiano di Cultura.  Applications from scholars of all nationalities are encouraged, but fellows must be proficient in English, the language of instruction at Koç University.

Underwater Archaeology Field School

Each year, the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) oversees an intense, four week accredited educational program allowing both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in a marine survey and underwater excavation of a historic shipwreck site. In addition to methodological training and academic lectures, students get valuable real-world experience in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, scientific diving and seamanship and laboratory analysis.

LAMP has partnered with a variety of universities, including Flinders University, Florida State University, Syracuse University and Plymouth State University, to organize and implement this four-credit course. For the 2018 Field School, four hours of graduate or undergraduate credit are available through Plymouth State University.

• Research Focus: The “Anniversary Wreck” is an historic vessel from the 1700s located just off the coast of St. Augustine.
• Skills, Procedures & Lectures: Students will also be instructed in scientific diving procedures, archaeological recording and excavation, the use of hydraulic probes and induction dredges, marine remote sensing survey and analysis (magnetometer & side scan sonar), artifact collection and documentation and basic conservation laboratory methodology. Additionally, the field school will host an evening lecture series with instructors and visiting professionals from various public, private and academic institutions throughout Florida.
